The paper illustrates some of the ongoing results of the interdepartmental research Prosit “PROgettare in SostenibilITà: qualification and digitalization in construction”, analyzing some of the key steps aimed at testing, within the actual regulatory and technological framework, new possible applications of recycled materials from construction and demolition (C&D) in sustainable and innovative supply chains. In Italy, in particular, about 98% of the non-hazardous waste from C&D activities already in 2018, as documented by the Eurostat’s “Recovery rate of construction and demolition waste” report. Nevertheless, C&D waste is mainly reused for the construction of embankments and road foundations. The research, therefore, identifies in the use of file-to-factory technologies a possible way to extend the scope of the reuse of these resources to realize diversified and non-standard manufactures and components, in the perspective of a greater spread of virtuous practices of circular economy in the construction sector. In this sense, a process “algorithm” is described, designed to be scaled and replicated in different contexts for similar purposes.

The paper depicts emerging scenarios of environmental design, in connection to the paradigm shift brought about by digital technologies, and awareness of future challenges. It reviews selected researches and projects applying ecological thinking principles. It aims at raising awareness on heuristic approaches in research and design. The paper focuses on collective design as a way to improve the governance of complexity in the current anthropogenic era. Creating a circular economy poses multiple challenges yet has social opportunity. It represents a key approach to implement the management of more sustainable waste flows to achieve win-win solutions consistent with the EU environment goals, and with the social-economic expectations. As part of the comprehensive outcomes of the EU funded research project REPAIR, the paper presents the results for new technological soils, designed with the aim of implementing the number of products coming from the recycling of both C&D waste and organic waste. The paper discusses the technical issues of this solution in the framework of the specific characteristic of its supply chain. The research aim is focused on the design approach, working on the new products and process at once. Further, the project highlights the importance of dedicated local networks for sharing knowledge in between different stakeholders and experts, and for promoting innovation at local scales.

The paper focuses on the impact generated by the un-ement of wast on both natural environment, and urbanization process, and on the opportunity to invert it by regenerating Wasted Landscapes, i.e. underused, polluted and abandoned sites, especially lo-cated in peri-urban areas. This is one of the aims of the REPAiR project, funded in 2016 by the European Commission within the Horizon 2020 framework, developed by University of Na-ples with TU Delft as Lead Partner. The implementation of multi-scaling/multi-disciplinary ap-proach, for testing out collaborative decision-making, has seen so far the research of a scien-ea in the context of the Metropolitan Area of Naples. Objectives According to international and EU policies, complementary approaches for landscape and environment values assessment, in land use planning, are an essential prerequisite on a supra-regional scale. Study area is an area in transformation, now also affected by the institution of the Matese national park, between Campania and Molise regions. In this context, appropriate management policies and land use change (LUC), in favor of bio-energy crops, may help to create new economies and new spatial development perspectives aimed to change negative trends such as erosion risk, socio-economic problems and environmental impacts. The work intends to present a possible physical-mathematical approach for pragmatic determination of the predictable consequences for LUC environmental effects, through empirical analysis, simulation models and objective diagnosis, as support for the decision makers, already in the ex-ante evaluation stage. Methods Tools used in the framework adopted are GIS processing and spatial decision support analysis (ILWIS and ArcGIS software) for LUC scenarios construction. LUC possible impacts assessment on environmental components, was evaluated through science shared approaches of Ecosystem Services considering Habitat Quality and Soil Risk with Invest software, and of landscape metrics such as Patch number, Patch density, Simpson Index, through FRAGSTAT software. Results From the framework three scenarios are delineated. First scenario (Scenario 1) refers to the current development trend. Second scenario (Scenario 2) the energy crops spatial allocation is foreseen in areas with the highest LUC degree. The third scenario (Scenario 3) concerns land abandonment and downgrade in the same areas of scenario 2. Ecosystem services values of habitat quality and erosion risk in Scenario 2 showed highest improvement, in contrast to scenarios 1 and 3. On the other hand landscape metrics highlighted greatest risks of landscape homogenisation and mosaic structure simplification, just in Scenario 2. Consequently integrated assessments enforce for further investigation on LUC spatial distribution and for corrective and mitigation measures that would be applied.

This article is a critical essay about the relevance of green infrastructures in reducing urban vulnerability with respect to the climate change impacts. The Author aims at demonstrating the relations between the presence of urban green infrastructures and the amount of the eco-systemic services provided by. The study takes as a key reference the naturalness gradient expressed by the different typologies of urban green areas, including artificial surfaces (roofs and green facades ), bare soils, brownfield areas. The study outlines a research perspective for the urban green infrastructures according to the technological and environmental requirements of the intervention, resulting from listing, cataloging and hierarchization of the ecosystem services provided by both the different components of a green infrastructure, as well as the specificity of techniques and plant materials used in the project. This article is part of a wider research on human-made soils in urban areas, and it summarized some of the main advances that the Author has produced since the 2012.

The paper presents the advances of the research team in the framework of the EU Project LIFE/ENV/IT/275 aimed at providing scientific proofs in the using of no food crops to prevent marginalization or abandonment of wide agricultural areas. Moving from this, the study provides a GIS based approach for finding out a set of consistent scenario for testing the impacts of Land Use Change (LUC) for polluted areas at regional scale. The scenarios set out and their comparision through the multicriteria method could represent a more effective support for planner and decision makers. Further the study demonstrates that bioremediation could become an opportunity for improving the ESs values, improving the biodiversity of the territory.

In recent centuries, the athropogenic land use change caused extensive loss of habitat and is widely recognized as a major driver of the current biodiversity crisis (de Lima, Dallimer, Atkinson, Barlow, 2012). One of the main transformation of the land use is caused by agriculture. Understanding how to minimize the impacts on biodiversity of the LUC not just limited to the peri-urban areas, but also to agricultural land is one of the main issues in land management. Mitigation measures have to be devoted to contrast fragmentation and increasing insulation in more natural environments, avoiding, on the other hand, an increasing homogenization of the agricultural landscape. This paper presents the evaluation of three LUC scenarios in a NIP Area of Campania Region (Cervelli et al., 2016), in terms of impacts on wildlife. The work was developed within European LIFE/ENV/IT/275 Ecoremed projects. GIS applications techniques and Spatial Multicriteria Decision Analysis (Malczewskj, 2006) have identified the areas of 14 wildlife species-umbrella possible presence in landscape. The evaluations were integrated through the use of sensitivity data, based on habitat assessments, territory permeability, species conservation and rarity, extended to more than 300 taxa. The developed methodology allows the identification of potential conflict areas between LUC scenarios and species presence areas, in order to calibrate interventions and mitigation strategies. The methodology is, therefore, a support tool for the decision-maker, to define appropriate planning strategies aimed to ecological networks management, physical-territorial continuity among the natural environments maintenance, creation of a species mobility support systems, combating isolation and ensuring the maintenance of adequate biodiversity levels. Purpose of the work is to contribute to the definition of positive LUC for NIP area, not only in economic terms, but as integrated development opportunities of the territory.

Il contributo si inquadra nell'ambito della ricerca condotta per il progetto Metropolis sul tema della conoscenza dei suoli urbani. In particolare, il saggio riporta in forma critica l'excursus metodologico per la definizione e la misura di alluni indicatori chiave per il funzionamento ecologico dei suoli nell'area orientale di Napoli.

Il contributo, in forma di saggio, riporta gli avanzamenti della riflessione disciplinare sui temi della riduzione del rischio climate change in area urbana. Il lavoro focalizza l'attenzione sul concetto di vulnerabilità urbana e sui fattori specifici in grado di identificare, valutare e misurare i livelli di vulnerabilità attraverso approcci evidence-based. La vulnerabilità, e segnatamente la vulnerabilità urbana, diventa quindi un prodotto delle molteplici e diverse condizioni dell’abitare, nonché dei fattori climatici, geologici e fisici che caratterizzano la geografia del luogo, così che la gestione proattiva del rischio passa inevitabilmente per il ripensamento, in chiave resiliente, del sistema urbano, trovando nella ri-progettazione degli spazi e nella ri-determinazione del rapporto popolazione/ ambiente costruito/ risorse naturali la chiave di lettura per la riduzione dei danni attesi.

Il contributo descrive il lavoro di ricerca condotto negli ultimi cinque anni da ricercatori del DiARC e del CNR sui temi della vulnerabilità dell’ambiente urbano e della sua resilienza. L’articolo descrive il background scientifico della ricerca e il campo di interesse prescelto, con un focus sui concetti di vulnerabilità e resilienza riferiti all’ambiente urbano inteso come luogo di interazione tra sistema costruito, sistema naturale e sistema socio-economico. L’articolo approfondisce due esperienze di ricerca internazionali realizzate dal gruppo sul tema della vulnerabilità urbana: lo studio de la Amenaza Sísmica y Vulnerabilidad Física del Gran Santo Domingo - in partenariato con le Nazioni Unite – e l’iniziativa 41°// per la rigenerazione delle aree urbane costiere, con LOT-EK Studio, N.Y. e con N.Y. Waterfront Alliance.

The paper discusses a field study on the topics of the Land Use Change (LUC) applied to the Ecosystem services (ES). Specially, the study focuses on the assessment of the value of ES through different option in LUC according to progressive findings of the European Project LIFE/ENV/IT/275 Ecoremed that has implemented a protocol for the bioremediation of contaminated soils in Campania region. The cultivation of no food crops (Poplar and Giant reed) is proposed as buffer crops waiting for the characterization of the areas. This facilitates the uptake of the mineral contaminants and the biodegradation of organic compounds reducing the risk for leaching and the run off of harmful contaminants that would occur on bare soils. The study aims at testing a proposal in approaching Land Use Change (LUC) adding socio-economic factors to the environmental topics. The research experience evaluated ES economic value through GIS tool and decision support software (ArcGIS/ILWIS), using literature data to assess the current value of the ES provided for such crops (€/ha/year) as benefits that people obtained from ecosystems. Some key scenarios have sorted out and compared through multicriteria analysis. Those scenarios are based on a large data set produced within the Life project activity. Moving from the deep knowledge of the environmental condition of the territory the study shows the alternative ES values of the Land Use Change starting from no-change scenario (Poplar and Giant reed), to abandonment. The discussion gives evidence that is possible to asses an increase of the ES value, both in case of a private and public action.

A partire dallo spazio interno nella sua complessità, da quello più privato delle celle ai luoghi collettivi, alla relazione fisica tra interno ed esterno, alle relazioni percettive all'interno e dall'interno verso l'esterno, ciò che è dentro il muro di cinta, ciò che è fuori dal muro di cinta, dai luoghi di soglia tra dentro e fuori, si vuole provare a ragionare sull'architettura del carcere e sullo spazio del vivere costretti come una nuova importante sfida del progetto architettonico contemporaneo nell'ambito dei diritti e della dignità dell'uomo. Il tema di questo incontro vuole spingere a una riflessione comune che muova dalla pluralità dei contesti sociali e dalle legittime aspirazioni e necessità dell'uomo, coinvolgendo coloro che progettano lo spazio, coloro che lo governano e coloro che lo abitano, anche attraverso forme innovative di partecipazione degli utenti; a pieno diritto il carcere si pone come una delle realtà più complesse e difficili, rispetto al quale il progetto di architettura si è totalmente annullato, nel quale l'abitare collettivo non è un'esigenza o un'ipotesi bensì è il dato di partenza, è la quotidianità di vita oggi solo in Italia di circa cinquantaquattromila persone.

La "Elaboración de una metodología para el aumento de la resiliencia y las capacidades de espuesta frente a sismos de la población de una zona urbana escogida del Distrito Nacional", nell'ambito del progetto internazionale (UE e UNDP tra gli altri ) "Estudio de la Amenaza Sísmica y Vulnerabilidad Física del Gran Santo Domingo", include due sotto-attività : Attività n. 3.1.2 "Análisis del fortalecimiento de capacidades de la conducta social"; Attività n. 3.1.3 "Plan de Comunicación a la Comunidad Urbana". Obiettivo dell'attività 3.1.2 è supportare le autorità locali e i tecnici nell'attivazione di strategie capaci di ridurre la vulnerabilità sociale urbana, aumentando la capacità di risposta della popolazione in caso di sisma attraverso l'istituzione di una metodologia per il rafforzamento del comportamento sociale del Distrito Nacional. L'obiettivo dell'attività 3.1.3"Plan de Comunicaciòn de Evacuaciòn para la comunidad urbana escogida" è definire una guida per l'elaborazione di un piano di comunicazione alla popolazione, che sia di supporto alle autorità competenti per la gestione del rischio sismico, attraverso la definizione di analisi, assunti metodologici e strategie per l'attuazione di strumenti di comunicazione. È stato, dunque, elaborato un esempio di Piano di Comunicazione, necessario per la promozione della cultura della prevenzione ai disastri.

Former and abandoned landfills represent a good opportunity for producing new impervious surfaces for the urban environment, contrasting soil loss (specially the agricultural one) and improving the recovery of brownfield. From such perspective, landfill redevelopment could be intended as the beginning of a new life cycle for the site, corresponding to a kick off action for achieving environmental and socio-economic development. This is the purpose of the Sufalnet Project (Sustainable Use of Former and Abandoned Landfill) that defines a new approach for landfill redevelopment in form of model strategy by which reducing both the risk of the project failure and of the environmental pollution. L’articolo presenta una narrazione a due voci sul tema del limite. Le riflessioni di un progettista ambientale (Rigillo), fortemente orientato a sviluppare un approccio ecologico al tema, e quello di un progettista della città (Santangelo), interessato a leggere la città sulla costa non solo a partire dal dato topografico, ma anche dalla condizione strutturale che ne segna profondamente forma e destino. In questa accezione ragionare sulla nozione di limite, nella sua sequenza mare/ terra/ insediamento, è funzionale ad esplorare il rapporto di reciprocità tra l’architettura della città e la sua costa, guardando alla storia delle trasformazioni urbane ed alla specificità dei sistemi ambientali che l’hanno generata. Il contributo propone una lettura della linea di costa urbana come paesaggio culturale - risultato dell’adattamento tra la specificità degli ecosistemi originari e le funzioni d’uso che la società ha scelto nel tempo – ma anche come infrastruttura ecologica che la città, in una rinnovata cultura del limite, deve saper comprendere ed utilizzare. Attraverso l’analisi dell’ambiente costiero e dell’architettura della città si afferma la necessità di perseguire una consapevolezza tecnica che diventi cultura del progetto, di apprendere dal passato per operare con successo le trasformazioni del presente, proporzionando gli obiettivi di sviluppo alle istanze di conservazione. Lo sguardo è rivolto al progetto, alle possibilità di trasformazione che esso racchiude, alla capacità dello stesso di ri-creare un paesaggio artificiale coerente con i caratteri ecologici e morfologici del sito, aggiungendo significati e qualità nel suo articolarsi in nuove forme e relazioni al sistema di bisogni che la città esprime., Territorio della Ricerca su Insediamenti e Ambiente.
