The Thai Andaman Sea coast has been repeatedly struck by tsunamis, such as the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, caused by an earthquake at Sunda Trench. Geological record shows that this was not the first tsunami in the area. Most tsunamis worldwide are of tectonic origin, but submarine landslides can cause destructive tsunamis, too. For the outer Thai shelf margin in the Andaman Sea the state of the slope and whether submarine mass wasting occurs and may add to the tsunami hazard potential was unknown so far. In order to examine sedimentary development, stability and tsunami potential of the slope a new multibeam bathymetry / high resolution 2D multichannel reflection seismic data set was acquired. The new data show that the Mergui Ridge, an area of low sedimentary input, is today shaped by bottom currents producing drift deposits. After uplift and subaerial exposure at the end of Late Miocene, the shelf subsided in Pliocene. Small scale tectonic deformation is ongoing. The development is reflected in older sediments, which are characterized by local erosion and today are partly covered by a drape of undisturbed sediments. Within sediments of the Mergui Ridge 17 mass transport deposits were identified, mainly within drift deposits, showing that the slope was unstable and failed repeatedly. The presence of fluids, instable drift deposits and ongoing tectonic activity may be important preconditioning factors that may lead to future failures. Based on their mostly relative small dimension (ca. 0.3 -14km3), and their occurrence in large water depth, it is unlikely that most failures were tsunamigenic, but it cannot be excluded. Based on thickness of hemipelagic layers between events, recurrence of failures seems to be long, compared to recurrence of tectonic tsunamis. A simple numerical modeling of landslide tsunami propagation and estimation of run up heights (1.0-25.8m) shows, landslides in the area may produce tsunamis but modeled scenarios represent worst case scenarios.

Por vezes, as ações destes processos na linha de costa podem causar problemas de erosão, provocando impactos ambientais e prejuízos socioeconômicos. Para que se possa agir de maneira preventiva é necessário um conhecimento aprofundado dos fatores naturais e antrópicos que agem na dinâmica costeira. O objetivo deste estudo é o mapeamento geológico do substrato plataformal adjacente a praias de Ponta Negra em Natal-RN, em uma área sob intensa erosão costeira. A metodologia utilizada consistiu na coleta de amostras superficiais de sedimento da plataforma continental, analisadas quanto a granulometria, composição, presença de matéria orgânica e teor de carbonato de cálcio. Posteriormente integrados a dados geofísicos, (batimetria mono e multifeixe e sonografia), hidrodinâmicos (ondas, correntes e marés) pré-existentes. Os resultados obtidos até o presente momento indicam que a granulometria dos sedimentos que compõem o substrato da plataforma em estudo aumenta com a profundidade, apresentam predomínio da fração areia grossa (43%) seguida por areia média (34%). A presença de carbonato de cálcio é marcante ao longo de toda a área, e também aumenta com a profundidade. Os sedimentos siliciclásticos são encontrados próximo a linha de costa, enquanto que os sedimentos bioclásticos ocorrem predominantemente após a isóbata de 10 m. A plataforma apresenta características de uma plataforma “faminta”, podendo ser observada pela exposição de afloramentos da Formação Barreiras na plataforma e na base do Morro do Careca. Essas informações devem ser levadas em consideração para a elaboração das medidas de recuperação da área, que vem enfrentando graves problemas com a erosão. The morphology of coastal areas is constantly changing due to interaction of natural and anthropogenic processes. Sometimes the actions of these processes on the coastline can cause erosional problems, causing environmental impacts and socio-economic losses. In order to act preventively requires a thorough understanding of natural and anthropogenic factors that act in coastal dynamics. The aim of this study is the geological mapping of marine substrate adjacent the beaches of Ponta Negra, Natal, Brazil, in an area under intense coastal erosion. The methodology consisted of the collection of surface sediment samples of the continental shelf, analyzed for particle size, composition, presence of organic matter and carbonate. Later integrated with pre-existing data such as geophysical (single and multbeam bathymetry, sonography) and hydrodynamic (waves, currents, tides) data. The results indicate that the grain size of the sediments that make up the substrate presented mainly coarse sand (43%), followed by medium sand (34%). The presence of carbonate is marked throughout the area, and increases with depth. The siliciclastic sediments founds near the shoreline, while bioclastic sediments occur predominantly after the isobath of 10m. Barreiras Formation outcrops on the shelf attests the sediment starvation, which used to amplify by human action. This information should be taken into account in the preparation of the recovery measures the area, which is facing serious problems with erosion.

The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami had an impact on the entire coastline of Southeast Asia. As one of several recent tsunamis, it provides unique opportunities to study the geomarine effects of such events in detail. The Andaman shelf (Thailand) was chosen to evaluate offshore tsunami deposits. Its coastline was strongly influenced by the 2004 tsunami, while the infrequent occurrence of strong storms and negligible fluvial discharge increase the preservation potential of tsunami deposits on the seafloor. In total, 60 sediment cores and 156 seafloor sediment samples from water depth between 5-65 m, as well as 10 onshore sediment samples and supporting hydroacoustic data were available for this study. Investigations of shallow seismic data, sedimentary structures, grain size composition, physical sediment properties, element composition and Ti/Ca log-ratio as well as 210Pb and AMS14C dating revealed general information about the seafloor sediment distribution and its stratigraphy on the Andaman Sea shelf during the Holocene period. In the study area, the seafloor is dominated by coarse sediment (sand and boulders with coral rubbles). Partly, small incised channels are observed down to 30 m water depth. This structure has been interpreted as a remnant of an old reef platform, active during times of lower sea level. Especially within these channels, finer grained sediment, including event deposits, were trapped. Sediment cores retrieved from shallow water down to approx. 16 m revealed three different types of event deposits that are interpreted as tsunami, storm and flash-flood deposits. Thus, the dataset allowed to discriminate and to compare recent storm and tsunami deposits. The most recent event deposits were found in core depths between 0 and 40 cm, and were interpreted as being tsunami deposits. These tsunami layers have a thickness about 12-30 cm, and are comprised of several distinct units that include sedimentary features as lamination, fining and coarsening upward, massive structure, erosional of both upper and lower contacts, terrigenous and anthropogenic components, and clasts. The different units represent different hydrodynamic conditions (probably run-up and backwash phase). In core depths between 5 and 82 cm, a second type of event layer has been found. These layers are 1-10 cm thick and mainly contain sharp and erosional lower contacts, partly massive and partly show slight lamination. These are assigned to storm deposits. Accordingly, the prominent difference between tsunami and storm deposits is the presence of clasts, terrigenous materials, anthropogenic artifacts and mud content. A third kind of event layers found in core depths between 12 and 92 cm are considered to be result of small scale events such as flash floods during summer monsoon period. These deposits have a thickness of 2-13 cm, and are mainly composed of clayey silt with few sand layers, which are commonly laminated and generally fining upward with transitional boundaries.

This study presents the first findings regarding the hydrography, morphodynamics, hydrodynamics and sea-level change on Parnaíba River (PR) and its delta. The PR is 1,400 km long and located in NE Brazil. It forms an asymmetric wave dominated delta, the Parnaíba River Delta (PRD). The delta region is approximately 100 km wide and has tidal channels forming an estuarine-lagoonal system, west of PR. The delta is located in a transition zone in terms of climatic and oceanographic conditions. Despite the existence of a river dam on its mid-course, the river has a moderate (approximately 91 mg/l, in average) suspended sediment load which is mainly attributed to the geology and the climatic conditions of its drainage basin. Rainfall data from 1965 to 2009 revealed seasonal variations on rainfall and suspended sediment concentration (SSC). Moreover, harmonic analysis of time series revealed a correlation of both, rainfall and SSC, with El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The suspended sediment concentration was calculated from a set of 12 multispectral satellite images (CBERS 2-B and LANDSAT TM 5), which were calibrated using in situ measurements. Using averaged river discharge and remote sensed suspended sediment concentration it was possible to estimate the amount of sediment that is transported through the PR to the continental shelf. The PR is the primary sediment source to the adjacent coast and this is evidenced by the shoreline stability and progradation noticed at the vicinities of the river mouth (observed on decadal time scale using satellite images). The river runoff interferes on the direction of the offshore bottom currents on the continental shelf up to 4 km in front of the river mouth. It acts as a hydrodynamic groin preventing sediment bypass. Offshore bathymetry and seismic profiles depicted evidences of past sea level on the continental shelf offshore PRD in the form of incised valley and paleo-channels. Interpretations of architectural elements, seismic facies and seismic boundaries were related to extreme events of sea level such as sea level low- and highstand providing relative age control for the formation and complete burial of the paleo-channels. Relating worldwide reconstructions of sea level curves to the interpretations it is suggested that the valley incision occurred during the Late Pleistocene sea-level drop and lowstand (70,000 – 20,000 years BP). Moreover, the valley infill indicates the flooding of the shelf during deglacial sea-level rise that reached the mid-Holocene highstand around 5,500 years BP.

Lithological evidence, benthic foraminiferal census counts, and high-resolution X-ray fluorescence (XRF) scanner-derived elemental data were integrated with planktonic foraminiferal biostratigraphy and bulk carbonate stable isotopes to retrace the Turonian to early Campanian paleoenvironmental evolution and sea-level history of the Tarfaya Atlantic coastal basin (SW Morocco). The lower Turonian is characterized by impoverished benthic foraminiferal assemblages, which reflect an impingement of the oxygen minimum zone on the shelf during a sea-level highstand. The appearance of low-oxygen tolerant benthic foraminiferal assemblages in the middle to upper Turonian indicates an improvement in bottom water oxygenation, probably linked to offshore retraction of the oxygen minimum zone during a regressive phase. From the late Turonian to Santonian, the presence of benthic foraminiferal with low diversity suggests relatively impoverished oxygenation in bottom water along the shelf. Three long-term oscillations in the abundance of terrigenous elements (increase of Al, Ti, K, Si and Fe normalized against Ca) are shown during the Coniacian and Santonian. This interval, which roughly corresponds to the Coniacian-Santonian Anoxic Event (OAE-3), is characterized by overall oxygen depleted to anoxic conditions at the sea-floor (indicated by the high organic carbon content, the presence of laminations and by low manganese/sulphur, high vanadium/calcium and bromine/calcium ratios in XRF scanning records). The lower Campanian transgression, only recorded in the southern part of the Tarfaya Basin, coincided with substantial deepening, enhanced accumulation of fine-grained clay-rich hemipelagic sediments and improved oxygenation at the sea-floor (highest diversity and abundance of benthic foraminiferal assemblages and low values of log(Mn/S)). The sea-level changes reconstructed in the Tarfaya Basin are correlated to the global eustatic changes. Two major unconformities (U1/U2 and U3), which punctuate the upper Turonian to lower Campanian succession in Tarfaya SN°1 and 2, are correlative to the base of the Merchantville III and Magothy III sequence boundaries of Miller et al., (2004) and Mizintseva et al. (2009), respectively. Stable isotope data of bulk carbonates (outcrop sections and composite cores) are correlated to the English Chalk, the Niobrara Formation (US Western Interior Seaway) and to the stacked carbon isotope reference curve of Wendler (2013). The Tarfaya carbon isotope curve reveals in particular the Navigation Event in the Coniacian, the Haven Brow, the Horseshoe Bay and the Buckle Events in the Santonian as well as the Santonian/Campanian Boundary Event.

Various sediment- and hydrodynamic factors including tides (meso-tidal system), waves, coastal currents and seasonal-driven river discharge influence the coastal zone of southern Vietnam. In particular, the Mekong River Delta (MRD) that belongs to Asian Mega-deltas, represents these land-ocean interactions in many variations. The locally prevailing processes and the amount of sediment, supplied by the Mekong distributaries, characterize the morphology and sediment distribution of the subaqueous delta. In contrast, delta morphology and sedimentary pattern reflect these impacts. This study investigates the hydro-, morpho- and sediment-dynamic processes of the subaqueous MRD to figure out their interactions. Three cruises in 2006, 2007 and 2008 were carried out in the subaqueous MRD extending from the Bassac River, the main distributary of the MRD, to the coast N of Ca Mau Cape in the Gulf of Thailand. All cruises were performed during the inter-monsoon season (March to May) where wave and wind influences have low effects to sedimentation processes compared to the summer monsoon (May to early October) and winter monsoon season (October to early March). This study presents data of suspended matter (turbidity meter, water samples, LISST-instrument), seismic profiles (Boomer and C-Boom-system), grab and sediment core sampling and point and current-measurements (using Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) that provide information of current velocities and directions. Data of different tide gauge stations in the MRD were included to compare the mixed semidiurnal–diurnal tidal cycle and related own relevant measurements (e.g. suspended matter, sediment transport direction). Various factors including tides (meso-tidal system), waves, coastal currents, monsoon-driven river discharge and human impact (agriculture, fishing, sand mining, tourism) influence the MRD. The present study aims to document the seafloor relief, sediment distribution and sediment accumulation rates to interpret modern sediment transport directions and main sedimentation processes in the subaqueous Mekong Delta. The major results of this investigation include the detection of two delta fronts 200 km apart, one at the mouth of the Bassac River (the biggest branch of the Mekong Delta) and the other around Ca Mau Cape (most south-western end of the Mekong Delta). The sediment accumulation rates vary greatly according to the location in the subaqueous delta and have reached up to 10 cm/yr for the last century. A cluster analysis of surface sediment samples revealed two different sediment types within the delta including well-sorted sandy sediment and poorly sorted, silty sediment. In addition, a third end member with medium to coarse sand characterize the distant parts of the delta at the transition to the open shelf. The increase of organic matter and carbonate content to the bottom set area and other sedimentary features such as shell fragments, foraminifera and concretions of palaeo-soils that do not occur in delta sediments, supports grain size-based classification. Beginning in front of the Bassac River mouth, sedimentary pattern indicates clockwise sediment transport alongshore in western direction to a broad topset area and the delta front around Ca Mau Cape. Our results clearly show the large lateral variability of the subaqueous Mekong Delta that is further complicated by strong monsoon-driven seasonality. River, tidal and wave forcing vary at local and seasonal scales with sedimentary response to localized short term depositional patterns that are often not preserved in long term geological records. Land-ocean interactions in the coastal zone are severely influenced by tidal processes. In regions of high sediment discharge like the Mekong River Delta in southern Vietnam, these processes are even more significant. Cruise results show significant areas of suspended sediment concentrations (SSCs) greater than 25 µl/l in the Mekong River branches and its subaqueous delta during the inter-monsoon season. 20 % of all measured SSCs in the subaqueous Mekong Delta exceed 100 µl/l. Highest concentrations occur close to the seabed. SSCs decrease at the transition to the open shelf. The shelf region contains only low suspension loads, especially on the south-eastern shelf (99 % of all samples < 25 µl/l). However, in the southern shelf region around Ca Mau Cape the suspension load is also higher (> 25 µl/l) close to the seabed in water depths of 20 to 25 m. Two surveys lasting 25 hours each were performed on mooring stations in 12 m (Mooring 1) and 26 m (Mooring 2) water depth and located 3.2 km apart on the subaqueous delta slope. Similar patterns of SSC over time show that concentrations of suspension load correlate with the tidal current velocities. High tidal current velocities of up to 0.6 m/s near the sea bottom generate increasing SSCs of more than 25µl/l in the water column. Additionally a significant trend of decreasing SSC from the near-seabed to the upper part of the water column can be observed. In terms of sediment transport the ebb phase dominates the tidal cycle by its higher tidal current velocities but the flood phase has the longer duration. The switch of the tidal current direction from ebb to flood phase occurs rapidly against which the change from flood to ebb phase requires up to 3 hours. This leads to an asymmetry of the tidal ellipses and may cause a net-sediment transport from the shelf into the subaqueous Mekong delta. In the subaqueous Mekong Delta and adjacent shelf, seven transects show similar patterns of SSCs dependent to the tidal phase. A hypopycnal sediment plume from the subaqueous Mekong Delta into the shelf region was not observed. Our results imply that resuspension by tidal currents dominates the sediment transport in the subaqueous Mekong Delta and adjacent shelf regions during the inter-monsoon season. Mega-deltas like the Mekong River delta differ in shape and sedimentary pattern in dependence on the interplay of river, tide and wave forces. Specific hydro- and morphodynamic conditions in the subaqueous part of the Mekong River Delta generate a sand-ridge-system combined with erosional channels, which is unique in subaqueous delta formations. This large-scale morphological feature extends along the delta front, in particular, the delta slope and subaqueous delta platform of the Mekong River Delta. A system consisting of two sand ridges and two erosional channels (termed sand-ridge-channel-system (SRCS)) covers at least an area of 1971 km2 and extends in minimum 128 km along the coast. Three different areas west of the Bassac river mouth, the largest and western-most Mekong distributary, were distinguished according to their morphology. The eastern area, where the channel-ridge formation begins, stretches along the delta slope and inner shelf platform southwest of the Bassac river mouth with slightly concave and erosional features. The central area covers the southern part of the subaqueous delta platform with a pronounced sand-ridge and erosional channel morphology. Hydroacoustic cross-sections of the SRCS reveal an asymmetric shape including steeper ridge flanks facing into offshore direction. The channel troughs incise up to 18.2 m b.s.l. and 10.5 m from the ridge top at the shallow subaqueous delta platform, respectively. At the western part of the central area, the sand ridges pinch out while the two channels merge into one and form a giant scour of up to 33 m water depth within the subaqueous delta platform of generally less than 7.7 m water depth. In the western area, the channel gets shallower and vanishes along the south-western most subaqueous delta platform around Ca Mau Cape. Headland retreat and sediment transport from erosive areas of the Mekong river delta coast are the source to form the sand-ridges and coastal subparallel tidal currents maintain and stabilize them. In contrast, tide and wind-driven currents cut the erosional channels, which act as fine sediment conveyor to the distal part of the delta front that is 200 km apart of the next main distributary. The SRCS represents a new morphological feature in the subaqueous deltaic environment and is a relevant indicator of delta instability and coastal erosion in subaqueous deltas. Einflüsse sediment- und hydrodynamischer Faktoren wie Tide, Wellen, küstennahe Strömungen und sich verändernde Flusseinträge infolge jahreszeitlich bedingter Wettervariationen (Monsun) sind in den Küstenzonen zu beobachten. Besonders das Mekong-Delta in Südvietnam, das zu Asiens großen Deltas zählt, repräsentiert diese Interaktionen zwischen Land und Meer in vielfacher Weise. Der Flusseintrag aus den Mekongarmen und die lokal domierenden Prozesse bestimmen die Deltamorphologie und die örtliche Sedimentverteilung im subaquatischen Delta. Im Gegensatz gibt die Deltaform und die Sedimentverteilung Einsichten über die Einflussfaktoren wieder. Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit den hydro-, morpho- und sedimentdynamischen Prozessen im subaquatischen Mekongdelta und versucht einen Beitrag zum Verständnis ihrer Interaktionen zu leisten. In den Jahren 2006, 2007 und 2008 wurden Forschungsausfahrten in das subaquatische Deltagebiet zwischen dem Bassac Fluß, dem größten Hauptarm im Mekongdelta, und dem östlich gelegenen Golf von Thailand durchgeführt. Alle Ausfahrten fanden während der Intermonsunzeit statt (März bis Mai), in der vergleichweise zur Sommer- und Wintermonsunzeit (Mai bis anfang Oktober bzw. Oktober bis März) Wind- und Wellenenergie geringen Einfluss auf die Sedimentationsprozesse haben. Diese Studie verarbeitet Daten von Sedimentschwebstoffen (Trübemesser, Wasserproben, LISST-Instrument), hydroakustischen Profilen (Boomer und C-Boom-System), Backgreiferproben und Schwerelotkernen. Des Weiteren wurden Strömungsgeschwindigkeiten und -richtungen mit Hilfe eines ADCPs (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) entlang von Profilen und an speziellen Ankerstationen über die gesamte Wassersäule aufgenommen. Die tideabhängigen Wasserstandsveränderungen entlang der Küste des Mekongdeltas wurden von geeigneten Messstationen hinzugezogen, um die Tidephasen mit den eigenen Untersuchungen zu korrelieren. Das Mekong-Delta wird von vielfältigen Faktoren wie Tide (meso-tidales System), Windwellen, küstennahe Strömungen, monsungesteuerter Ausfluss der Flüsse und menschlichen Eingriffen (Agrikultur, Fischerei, Sandausbaggerungen, Tourismus) geprägt. Deshalb soll die rezente Untersuchung darauf zielen, die Meeresbodenmorphologie, Sedimentverteilung und Sedimentakkumulationsraten zu erfassen, um somit die gegenwärtige Sedimenttransportrichtung und die dominierenden Sedimentationsprozesse im subaquatischen Mekong-Delta zu interpretieren. Im Mekong-Delta sind zwei Deltafronten herausgebildet. Eine befindet sich direkt vor dem Bassac-Fluss und den Hauptflussmündungen des Mekong-Flusses während die Zweite sich 200 km am Kap Ca Mau, dem südwestlichen Ende des Mekong-Deltas, erstreckt. Die Sedimentakkumulationsraten des subaquatischen Mekong-Deltas sind stark ortsabhängig und erreichen für das letzte Jahrhundert bis zu 10 cm/a. Eine Klusteranalyse der Oberflächensedimente ergab zwei Sedimenttypen, die das subaquatische Mekong-Delta repräsentieren. Der erste Typ besteht aus gut sortierten Sanden während der zweite Typ ein breites Korngrößenspektrum dominierend in der Siltfraktion aufweist und schlecht sortiert ist. Ein drittes Kluster, bestehend aus mittleren und groben Sanden, charakterisiert den distalen Deltabereich im Übergang zum offenen Schelf. Die auf der Korngrößenverteilung basierende Klassifikation wird sowohl durch einen anwachsenden Anteil an organischen Material und erhöhtem Karbonatanteil am auslaufenden Deltahang in seewärtiger Richtung als auch vorkommende Muschelbruchstücke, Foraminiferen und Konkretionen von Paläoböden, die nicht in Deltasedimenten vorkommen, unterstützt. Die Sedimentmuster seewärts des Bassac-Flusses zeigen einen Sedimenttransport im Uhrzeigersinn und in westlicher Richtung entlang der Küste bis zu einem breiten flachen Gebiet der Deltafront von Kap Ca Mau. Die subaquatischen Deltasedimente zeigen eine sehr hohe laterale Variabilität auf, die durch die stark lokal und monsungesteuerte saisonal variirende Wirkung aus Flussfracht, Tide und Wellen resultiert. Häufig werden diese Sedimente nicht in langfristigen geologischen Aufzeichnungen erhalten. Tideprozesse beeinflussen die Interaktion zwischen Land und Meer. Besonders in Regionen mit einem hohen Sedimentausfluss wie im Mekongdelta in Südvietnam sind diese Prozesse weitaus stärker von Bedeutung. Während der Forschungsausfahrten in der Intermonsunzeit sind erhöhte Sedimentkonzentration größer 25µl/l in Bereichen der Hauptflussarme des Mekongs und des subaquatischen Gebietes beobachtet worden. Im Besonderen überstiegen 20 % aller Messungen im subaquatischen Delta eine Sedimentkonzentration von 100 µl/l, wobei die höhsten Werte nahe des Meeresbodens gemessen wurden. Im Übergang zum offenen Schelf nehmen die Sedimentkonzentrationen ab und speziell in der südöstlichen Schelfregion sind 99 Prozent aller Messungen unterhalb von 25 µl/l. Eine Ausnahme zeigt das südliche Schelfgebiet um das Kap Ca Mau, wo bodennah in Wassertiefen von 20 bis 25 m eine erhöhte Sedimentschwebfracht (>25 µl/l) auftritt. Es wurden zwei Untersuchungen von jeweils 25 Stunden an Ankerstationen in Wassertiefen von 12 m (Ankerstation 1) und 26 m (Ankerstation 2) durchgeführt, um jeweils über eine Tidephase die Sedimentkonzentrationen der Wassersäule und die Strömungsgeschwindigkeiten bzw. -richtungen in unterschiedlichen Wassertiefe zu ermitteln. Die Stationen befinden sich am subaquatischen Deltahang und 3.2 km voneinander entfernt. Beide Untersuchungen zeigen über die Zeit ähnliche Sedimentverteilungen, die mit den Tidesströmungen korrelieren. Es werden erhöhte Sedimentkonzentrationen (>25µl/l) bei hohen Tideströmungen von bis zu 0.6 m/s gemessen. Zusätzlich ist ein abnehmender Trend der Sedimentkonzentration vom bodennahen Bereich hin zu der Meeresoberfläche zu beobachten. Bezüglich des Sedimenttransportes hat die Ebbphase höhere Strömungsgeschwindigkeiten gegenüber der Flutphase, die jedoch länger andauert. Des Weiteren ist der Wechsel von Ebb- zur Flutphase sehr schnell während der Übergang von Flut zu Ebbe bis zu 3 Stunden andauern kann. Die erzeugte Asymmetrie der Tideellipse, kann infolge der höheren Tideströmungen der Ebbphase einen Netzsedimenttransport vom Schelf in das subaquatische Mekong-Delta verursachen. Sieben Transekte zeigen in Abhängigkeit zur Tidephase im subaquatischen Mekong-Delta und dem angrenzenden Schelf ähnliche Schwebfrachtverteilungen. Ein hypopyknischer Plume vom subaquatischen Mekong-Delta in den offenen Schelf ist nicht beobachtet worden. Aus den Untersuchungsergebnissen ist zu folgern, dass während der Intermonsunzeit der Sedimenttransport aufgrund der Resuspension durch Tideströmungen erfolgt. Der lokale Einfluss von Tide, Wellen und Flüssen prägt die Morphologie und Sedimentverbreitung in großen Deltas wie dem Mekong-Delta. Spezifische hydro- und morphodynamische Bedingungen bilden im Mekong-Delta ein Sandrücken-System in Verbindung mit erosiven Rinnen, dass einzigartig in subaquatischen Deltagebieten ist. Es erstreckt sich großräumig entlang der Deltafront, im Besonderen am Deltahang und der subaquatischen Deltaplattform. Bestehung aus zwei Sandrücken und zwei erosiven Rinnen nimmt es mindestens eine Fläche von 1971 km² ein und verläuft 128 km entlang der Küste. In Abhängigkeit von der Morphologie werden drei Einheiten westlich der Mündung des Bassac-Flusses, dem größten und westlichsten Flussarm des Mekong-Deltas, unterschieden. Der östliche Bereich des Sandrücken-Rinnen-System beginnt südwestlich der Bassac-Flussmündung. Dort erstreckt es sich am Deltahang und der inneren Schelfplattform und ist morphologisch durch konkave und erosive Merkmale am Meeresboden gekennzeichnet. Den zentralen Bereich des Sandrücken-Rinnen-Systems nimmt die südliche subaquatische Deltaplattform ein, auf der die Sandrücken und erosiven Rinnen deutlich ausgeprägt sind. Anhand hydroakustischer Querschnitte durch das Sandrücken-Rinnen-System ist seine asymmetrische Form gut erkennbar, wobei die steileren Flanken in seewärtige Richtung zeigen. Die Rinnen schneiden sich bis zu 18 m Wassertiefe und bis zu 10.5 m, gemessen vom Rückenkamm, in die subaquatische Deltaplattform ein. Im westlichen Bereich des zentralen Gebietes laufen die Sandrücken aus und die Rinnen vereinigen sich in Form einer großen Kolkung von bis zu 33 m Wassertiefe in der subaquatischen Deltaplattform, die im Umfeld der Kolkung Wassertiefen kleiner als 7.7 m aufweist. In dem westlichen Gebiet des Sandrücken-Rinnen-Systems wird die einzelne Rinne stetig flacher bis sie in der südwestlichen subaquatischen Deltaplattform um das Kap Ca Mau verschwindet. Rückschreitende Erosion an Landzungen und weitere erosiven Küstengebiete des Mekongdeltas sind Nährgebiete für die Sandrücken während Tideströmungen, subparallel zur Küste, sie unterhalten und stabilisieren. Im Gegensatz formen auch Tide- und windinduzierte Strömungen die Rinnen, die sich tief in die subaquatische Deltaplatform einschneiden und als Sedimentförderband zu der distalen Deltafront um das Kap Ca Mau dienen, das 200 km von der nächsten Haupflussmündung entfernt liegt. Das Sandrücken-Rinnen-System repräsentiert eine neue morphologisches Besonderheit in einer Deltaumgebung und ist ein Indikator für Instabilitäten und Küstenerosion in subaquatischen Deltas.

This thesis deals with internal waves propagating along a lutocline and their influence on the local sediment transport dynamics in the German Ems estuary. Additionally, the operability of oceanographic instruments in highly turbid waters, which is the case in the Ems estuary, is verified.

Mangrove coasts are under eroding in some areas. The processes that control the erosion have not been studied yet. This study was carried-out at two mangrove cliff shorelines in South Vietnam to answer this question. At both sites, the erosion is affected by both the duration of tidal inundation and wave energy input. The most dominant factor is the duration of tidal inundation, which usually lasts longer during neap tide. Especially, the erosion is higher during neap tide. As well, tidal current, in particular strong asymmetry and speed, can influence the erosion. Higher shear strength of the cliff soil can reduce the erosion rate. Without mangroves, the erosion will accelerate.

Shallow seas are influenced by a magnitude of processes, acting on- and offshore. Therefore, most shallow sea areas have a unique appearance, preserving information both about their geologic history and processes acting on them. For this study, extensive hydroacoustic surveys, including side scan sonar, multibeam echo sounder, and reflection seismic, as well as sedimentological analysis were carried out in the Fehmarn Belt (SW Baltic Sea) and offshore Khao Lak (Andaman Sea, Thailand) between 2007 and 2011. The geologic evolution since the last glacial as well as recent sediment dynamics were investigated in Fehmarn Belt, while offshore impacts of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami where evaluated off Khao Lak. The development of the Baltic Sea since the last glacial period was controlled by several regression and transgression events during the phases Baltic Ice Lake, Yoldia Sea, Ancylus Lake and Littorina Sea. Many details regarding the development of these stages are unsolved, one question being whether, and to what extent, the regression of the Ancylus Lake at 9,200 to 9,000 14C yr BP took place over the Darss Sill. Next to the general geological evolution of Fehmarn Belt since the last glacial, this study addresses the question whether a drowned river system in Fehmarn Belt (SW Baltic Sea) can be related to the drainage of the Ancylus Lake. The river channel is cut into glacial till in the western Fehmarn Belt, reaching an incision depth of up to 12 m at a base level of 40 m b.s.l. (below sea level). Its continuation towards west can be recognized in bathymetric data, while the channel is buried towards Mecklenburg Bay. According to seismic images, it is rapidly widening from several hundred meters to more than 1 kilometre and seems to fade towards east. Sediment thickness above the glacial till can exceed 30 m in the buried section of the channel. It is proposed that the channel was mainly shaped as part of a glacial meltwater system at a water level of 30 m b.s.l., although it was eventually incised subglacially. During the lowstand of the Baltic Ice Lake, local, shallow water bodies covered the study area and calm conditions prevailed. A previously reported westward directed drainage of a lake in the eastern Fehmarn Belt could be restricted to a time interval following the highstand of the Ancylus Lake, and prior to the Littorina transgression. Timing, water level and potential water discharge of this event suggest its connection to the partial drainage of the Ancylus Lake over the Darss Sill. Subsequently to the regression, cliffs and lake deposits point to a local water level between 24 to 26 m b.s.l. However, finding of a channel system filled with sediment deposited during the early Littorina Transgression might indicate a short phase with a water level down to 30 m b.s.l. With rising water level during the Littorina transgression, a large subaqueous dune field was formed in the central Fehmarn Belt. It is situated in water depths between 11 and 25 m, with an extension of about 8.1 km E – W and 1.8 km N - S. It consists of asymmetric dunes, indicating a W to E directed current, with crest heights of up to 2.5 m. The dunes are composed of allochthonous, well-sorted medium to coarse sand. Sand ribbons, connected to the subaqueous dune-field and protruding towards the southwest, are supposed to be sediment-conduits. Only minor movements of the field over the annual cycle could be observed, but comparisons with older maps show an increase in spatial extension over the course of decades. It is assumed that sediment movements in the subaqueous dune field occur mainly during west-storm conditions, when salt water infrequently intrudes from the North Sea into the Baltic Sea. The aim of the second case study was to resolve impact of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami on offshore areas. The coastal area of Khao Lak (Thailand) was heavily damaged by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Meanwhile, its impact on offshore areas is mostly unknown, although offshore tsunami deposits were speculated to be widespread in the geological record. The 2004 tsunami offered the unique opportunity to catalogue its offshore effects from a well-recorded series of events. In Thailand, reported onshore tsunami deposits, containing marine sediments, as well as satellite images, showing large amounts of sediment transported offshore, indicate that the seafloor was impacted by tsunami run-up and backwash. Offshore Khao Lak, paleoreefs with associated boulder fields and sandy sediments dominate the inner continental shelf. Patches of fine-grained (silt to fine sand) sediments exist in water depths of less than 15 m. The sediment distribution pattern is stable between 2007 and 2010, apart from small shifts regarding the boundaries of the fine-grained sediment patches. In sediment cores and grab samples an event layer was documented, situated below a cover of modern sediments that is only a few cm thick. The event-layer can be securely traced down to 18 m water depth. It consists mostly of sand, including coral fragments, but contains compounds of terrigenous origin as well. It is interpreted as a 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami deposit, which was the last major event in the area. Beneath 18 m water depth, indications of potential tsunami influence on a system of sand ridges are found, including erosion of app. 1 m deep channels at the NW-flank of the sand ridges and the deposition of silty material sandwiched by sandy sediments. On wide areas of the study-site an impact of the tsunami is hardly identifiable by seafloor morphology or sediment distribution five year after the event, pointing towards a tsunami impact focussed to some areas and a rapid return of the seafloor to equilibrium conditions. Flache Bereiche von Schelfmeeren werden von einer Vielzahl von Faktoren geformt. Ihr gegenwärtiges Erscheinungsbild ist daher meist einzigartig, und erhält Informationen über die geologische Geschichte sowie über einwirkende Prozesse. Diese Arbeit präsentiert die Ergebnisse umfangreicher hydroakustischer (Seitensichtsonar, Fächerecholot, seismische Messmethoden) und sedimentologischer Untersuchungen in zwei Arbeitsgebieten, gelegen im Fehmarn Belt (SW Ostsee, Deutschland) und seewärts von Khao Lak (Andaman See, Thailand). Die geologische Entwicklung seit dem letzten Glazial sowie die rezente Sedimentdynamik sind Schwerpunkte der Arbeit im Fehmarn Belt. Im Arbeitsgebiet vor Thailand liegt der Fokus auf der Identifikation von Sediment- und morphologischen Strukturen, die durch einen Tsunami, der am 26.12.2004 die Küsten entlang des Indischen Ozeans traf, entstanden sind. Die geologische Entwicklung im Bereich des Fehmarn Belt sowie der östlich anschließenden Mecklenburger Bucht wurde seit dem letzten Glazial durch starke Schwankungen des Wasserspiegels im Rahmen der Entwicklung der heutigen Ostsee durch die Phasen des Baltischen Eistausees, des Yoldia Meeres, des Ancylus Sees und der Littorina Meeres geprägt. Sowohl Fehmarn Belt als auch Mecklenburger Bucht sind vom Hauptteil des Ostseeraumes durch Schwellen isoliert, die einen Wassertausch unterhalb eines Niveaus von 24 Metern seit dem letzten Glazial verhindert haben. Im westlichen Fehmarn Belt ist ein ertrunkener Flusslauf bis zu 12 Meter tief in glaziale Ablagerungen eingeschnitten. Die heutige Basis des Flusslaufes liegt maximal 42 Meter unterhalb des Meeresspiegels. Die Fortsetzung des Flusslaufes nach Westen ist in bathymetrischen Karten deutlich erkennbar, wogegen er nach Osten, Richtung Mecklenburger Bucht, mit Sediment verfüllt ist. Anhand von seismischen Aufnahmen lässt sich zeigen, dass die Breite des verfüllten Flusslaufes von wenigen hundert Metern auf mehr als einen Kilometer im zentralen Teil des Fehmarn Belt zunimmt, und er dort auszulaufen scheint. Die Sedimentmächtigkeit über den glazialen Sedimenten im verfüllten Abschnitt des Flusslaufes beträgt maximal etwa 30 Meter. Der Flusslauf war Bestandteil eines glazialen Entwässerungssystems, mit einem Wasserstand von etwa 30 Metern unter dem heutigen Meeresspiegel. Auf Grund des auf kurzer Distanz stark wechselnden morphologischen Erscheinungsbildes lässt sich vermuten, dass der Flusslauf ursprünglich subglazial angelegt und später reaktiviert wurde. Während beider Tiefstände des Baltischen Eistausees war der westliche Fehmarn Belt Teil einer lokalen Seenlandschaft. Eine bereits beschriebene ausgeprägte Regression eines Sees im östlichen Fehmarn Belt konnte auf den Zeitraum zwischen dem Hochstand des Ancylus-Sees und dem Beginn der Littorina-Transgression eingegrenzt werden. Der Zeitraum, der Wasserstand nach der Regression sowie das berechnete Durchflussvolumen legen nahe, dass diese Regression kein lokales Ereignis war, sondern mit der partiellen Regression des Ancylus-Sees hinter der Darßer Schwelle in Verbindung stand. Fossile Kliffs und im lakustrinen Milieu abgelagerte Sedimente weisen auf einen Wasserstand zwischen 24 und 26 m unterhalb des heutigen Meeresspiegels im Anschluss an diese Regression hin, auch wenn ein kurzfristig niedrigerer Wasserstand um 30 m nicht ausgeschlossen werden kann. Während der anschließenden Littorina-Transgression bildete sich ein in Ost-West Richtung 8.1 km ausgedehntes Riesenrippelfeld zwischen 11 und 25 Meter Wassertiefe im zentralen Bereich des Fehmarn Belt. Die asymmetrischen Strömungsrippeln zeigen eine West-Ost gerichtete Strömung an und haben ein Kammhöhe von bis zu 2.5 Metern. Sie bestehen aus allochthonen Mittel- bis Grobsanden. Der Sedimenttransport in das Rippelfeld erfolgt vermutlich über Sandbänder, die aus dem Feld zu einer Abrasionplattform westlich von Fehmarn reichen. Während nur minimale Bewegung der Riesenrippeln über einen Jahreszyklus festzustellen waren, zeigt der Vergleich mit älteren Aufnahmen deutlich eine Ausdehnung des Feldes über den Zeitraum von Jahrzehnten. Die Bewegungen des Feldes hängen vermutlich mit unregelmäßig auftretenden Salzwassereinbrüchen aus der Nordsee in die Ostsee zusammen, die entlang der Südseite des Fehmarn Belt strömen. Vor den Küsten von Thailand lag der Schwerpunkt der Arbeit auf der Identifikation von Einwirkungen des Tsunami von 2004 auf den Flachwasserbereich. Die Küsten von Khao Lak gehörten dabei zu den am schwersten betroffenen Gebieten. Der Einfluss von Tsunami auf den Meeresboden ist allerdings weitgehend unverstanden, obwohl vermutet wurde, dass Paläo-Tsunamis in der geologischen Vergangenheit großen Einfluss auf Schelfbereiche hatten. Der Tsunami von 2004 ermöglichte es, dessen Auswirkungen auf den Meeresboden gezielt zu untersuchen. Marine Komponenten, die in Tsunamiablagerungen an Land gefunden wurden sowie Satellitenaufnahmen, die deutlich den seewärtigen Transport von Sediment zeigen, weisen auf einen Beeinflussung des Meeresbodens vor Thailand durch die auflaufende und ablaufende Tsunamiwelle hin. Der Meeresboden seewärts von Khao Lak wird durch eine ertrunkene Riffplattform und daran anschließende ausgedehnte Sandflächen geprägt. In lokal scharf abgegrenzten Gebieten findet sich feinkörnigeres, siltig bis maximal feinsandiges Sediment bis in eine Wassertiefe von 15 m. Die großräumige Sedimentverteilung war während des Untersuchungszeitraumes zwischen 2007 und 2010 stabil, allerdings wurden kleinräumige Verschiebungen der Sedimentgrenzen des siltig-feinsandigen Meeresbodens beobachtet. In verschiedenen Sedimentkernen und Greiferproben konnte eine Event-Lage nachgewiesen werden, die aus überwiegend sandigem Sediment besteht, terrigene Bestandteile enthält und von einer wenige Zentimeter mächtigen Sedimentschicht bedeckt ist, die nach 2004 abgelagert worden ist. Diese Event-Lage wird als Ablagerung des Tsunami von 2004 interpretiert und kann bis in eine Wassertiefe von 18 m nachgewiesen werden. In Wassertiefen unterhalb von 18 m finden sich Hinweise auf die Beeinflussung eines Sandrückensystem durch den Tsunami. Sowohl etwa 1 Meter tief erodierte Kanäle als auch Ablagerungen von überwiegend siltigem Material zwischen Sandlagen könnten auf den Tsunami von 2004 zurückzuführen sein; dies lässt sich mit den vorhandenen Daten allerdings nicht zweifelsfrei nachweisen. Über weite Teile des Untersuchungsgebietes lassen sich keine Sedimente oder morphologische Strukturen nachweisen, die auf den Tsunami von 2004 zurückzuführen sind. Dies deutet sowohl auf einen örtlich begrenzten Einfluss des Tsunami im Untersuchungsgebiet, als auch auf eine schnelle Regeneration des Meeresbodens nach einem Tsunami hin.

The late Pleistocene-Holocene sedimentary architecture on two different geological setting areas on the Southern Vietnam Shelf has been investigated on the basis of shallow seismic data, sediment core data, sequence stratigraphic concepts and numerical modeling. The late Pleistocene-Holocene sequence stratigraphic models of the SE Vietnam and Nha Trang Shelf show distinctive features which result from the differences in sediment supply regime, shelf morphology and hydrodynamic conditions between the two areas. Sedimentation on the Nha Trang Shelf from the end of the LGM to present has been investigated on the basis of process-based numerical modeling simulations. The results indicate that the sediment supply during TST period (19.6-8.0 ky BP) is 3 to 4 times higher than that of HST period (8.0-0 ky BP). During HST and TST period, 50-80 % of total supplied sediment was contributed by three local river basins (Cai, Dinh and Van Phong) and the rest was transported alongshore from the north.

The coast of SE-Vietnam, extending between Nha Trang and Phan Thiet, was explored in terms of beachrock formation, sea-level fluctuations and shallow water temperature during the mid-Holocene in comparison with present time. Beachrock formations were found at three places. Petrographic observations, chemistry analyses of Mg and Sr as well as isotopic results of δ18O and δ13C indicated beachrock lithification in marine environment within the phreatic zone. The early cement types are constituted by micritic high-Mg calcite and aragonite crystals. In addition, blade cement type was found indicating meteoritic recrystallization of the most elevated beachrocks which are located today in supratidal position. The age of the beachrocks covers a period from 6721 to 642 cal yr BP. It can be divided into three intervals: 6721 to 5869 cal yr BP as an older period of beachrock formation, followed by 3760 to 3272 cal yr BP showing a probable second stage of cementation, and the youngest cement formation from 1210 to 642 cal yr BP. The age of the beachrocks were correlated with other sea-level indicators such as beachridge, backshore and washover deposits. They were explored in order to determine the sea-level fluctuations from mid-Holocene to the present time. Records of sea-level highstand started between 6721 to 5869 cal yr BP with an average of 1.32 m above the modern mean sea level (amsl) indicated by oldest beachrocks. Subsequently, it rose until 2.67 m as maximum spring-tidal level between 5687 to 5377 cal yr BP, measured in at the base of Ca Na beachridge. This corresponds to a mean sea-level of 1.52 m after subtraction of the half-tidal range of 1.15 m. The drop of the sea-level started after the 5377 cal yr BP with a linear decrease from 4500 cal yr BP until present time. Therefore, the probable coastal scenery during the mid-Holocene sea-level highstand shows that the beachrocks formed within the intertidal zone and beachridge was deposited in the supratidal zone. Both indicators denote the same period of formation within the interval of 6721 to 5377 cal yr BP during mid-Holocene sea-level highstand. From the Ca Na beachridge a sample of Spondylus sp, bivalve dated at 5537 ± 55 cal yr BP was analysed for δ18O and δ13C isotopes along its growth-path. From the stable isotope records shallow-water temperatures during the mid-Holocene sea-level highstand were calculated. Paleotemperature values were compared to present water temperature from NOAA at two different geographic positions, inside and outside of the investigation area taking into account a costal upwelling. The results of the comparison paleotemperature and modern water temperature in two positions showed a seasonal difference. During summertime the water temperature in the mid-Holocene was approximately 1° C warmer than at the present water temperature. Higher paleotemperatures found in shallow water along the SE-Vietnam coast during the mid-Holocene could be responsible for excessive coral mortality. The following hypothesis is suggested: firstly, warm water temperatures induced the bleaching of corals; secondly, beachridge deposit consisting mainly of skeleton from marine organisms might indicate the deposition after their death. The present study demonstrates that the coastal evolution in SE-Vietnam was strongly influenced by mid-Holocene sea-level highstand and the warming of coastal waters. Die Küste von SO-Vietnam wurde zwischen den Städten Nha Trang and Phan Thiet untersucht. Im Mittelpunkt stand die Bildung von Beachrocks im Zusammenhang mit Meeresspiegelschwankungen und die Rekonstruktion der Wassertemperatur während des mittleren Holozäns. Die Beachrocks wurden an drei Standorten gefunden. Die petrographische und chemische Auswertung sowie die Isotopenwerte von δ18O und δ13C zeigt, dass die Beachrocks im marinen Milieu innerhalb des phreatischen Bereichs gebildet wurden. Der Originalzement der Beachrocks besteht aus Mikrit mit hoch-Mg Calzit und Aragonit. Außerdem wurde in den heute höchstgelegenen Beachrocks in supratidaler Position ein Bladezementtyp gefunden, der ein Anzeichen für den Einfluss von Süßwasser ist. Das Alter der Beachrocks erstreckt sich über einen Zeitraum von 6721 bis 642 Kalenderjahren vor heute, der in drei Phasen unterteilt ist: von 6721 bis 5869 Kalenderjahren vor heute entstand die älteste Beachrockformation, darauf folgt von 3760 bis 3272 Kalenderjahren vor heute die zweite Phase, in der Beachrocks gebildet wurden, und die jüngste Beachrockformation entstand zwischen 1210 und 640 Kalenderjahren vor heute. Das Alter der Beachrocks wurde gemeinsam mit Ablagrungen vom Strandwall, Oberen Strand und Durchbruchsfächer als weitere Anzeichen der Meeresspiegelschwankungen vom mittleren Holozän bis in die Gegenwart untersucht. Die Meeresspiegelschwankungen begannen zwischen 6721 bis 5869 Kalenderjahren vor heute mit einem Mittelwert von 1.32 m über dem heutigen mittleren Meeresspiegel, was aus den Werten der Beachrocks berechnet wurde. Infolgedessen lag der Anstieg bis zum Meeresspiegelhochstand zwischen 5687 und 5377 Kalenderjahren vor heute bei + 2.67 m als maximale Springtide und bei + 1.52 m als mittlerer Meeresspigel. 1.52 m wurde aus dem Höchststand (2.67 m) minus 1.15 m berechnet, der Hälfte des Wertes des heutigen Tidenhubs. Nach 5377 Kalenderjahren vor heute sank der Meeresspiegel ab 4500 Kalenderjahren linear zum heutigen Niveau ab. Dadurch entstanden an der Küste im mittleren Holozän Beachrocks in der Gezeitenzone und Strandwälle in der supratiden Zone. Die beiden Meeresspiegelindikatoren deuten auf die gleiche Zeit hin, nämlich zwischen 6721 bis 5377 Kalenderjahren vor heute, den Höchstand des Meeresspiegels. Am Beachridge von Ca Na wurde eine Schale der Muschel Spondylus sp analysiert. Die Muschel wurde auf 5537 ± 55 Kalenderjahre vor heute datiert. Aus der Schale wurden entsprechend dem Schalenwachstum eine Serie von Karbonat-Mikroproben entnommen und das stabile Isotop 18O gemessen. Aus den stabilen Isotopenwerten wurde die Wasser-Paläotemperatur berechnet. Die Ergebnisse der Paläotemperaturrekonstrution wurden mit den heutigen Wassertemperaturen an zwei unterschiedlichen geographischen Positionen verglichen, innerhalb und außerhalb des Untersuchungsgebiets, da an der sudöstlichen Küste von Vietnam ein Auftriebgebiet liegt. Die Paläotemperaturergebnisse, verglichen mit der heutigen Wassertemperatur an diesen zwei Positionen, zeigen einen saisonalen Unterschied an. Während der Sommersaison war die Wassertemperatur im mittleren Holozän um ca. 1° C höher als die derzeitige Wassertemperatur. Die erhöhte Temperatur der Küstengewässer von SO-Vietnam während des mittleren Holozäns war vermutlich verantwortlich für die erhöhte Mortalität der Korallen. Diese Hypothese basiert auf folgenden Annahmen: Erstens führte die warme Wassertemperatur das „Bleaching“ der Korallen herbei. Zweitens könnte der Strandwall eine Ablagerung dieser Korallen nach ihrem Tod sein, weil seine Ausgestaltung hauptsächlich aus Skeletten von Meeresorganismen besteht. Aus den oben beschriebenen Untersuchungen lässt sich der Schluss ziehen, dass die Küstenentwicklung von SO-Vietnam durch den Meeresspiegelhochstand und die Erwärmung der flachen Küstengewässer im Mittelholozän stark beeinflusst wurde.

A side-looking sonar was constructed for military purposes during World War II as a development of forward-search sonars used for detection of foe submarines hiding motionless on a seabed. An unexpected career of sidescan sonars began with their implementation in marine geology. A sonar ability to recognise sediment roughness and consequently grain size allowed significant opportunities for sediment mapping, which were spatially more precise than the ones performed by sediment sampling. In addition, an acoustic shadow caused by close-seabed scanning over troughs and ridges allowed easier interpretation of the bottom morphology. These revolutionary features opened new ways of underwater exploration. Some multi-disciplinary applications of sonographs on continental shelves are presented in the introduction of this work after a technical description of a sidescan sonar system, and sonograph processing issues. The main objective of this work is to discuss three case studies on sidescan sonar applications in seabed dynamics research. Each of the study was constructed as a separate research paper qualified for prestigious journals and thus, the introductory part of this work is a descriptive supplement of information enclosed in the presented manuscripts. A case study from the southern Vietnamese shelf is focused on sand dunes mapping on the basis of not mosaicked sonographs. It was the first investigation on bedforms from this area; however it contains data only from the end of the winter monsoon. The shelf area was divided into five zones grouping dunes of similar size, shape and orientation. All located sand dunes higher than 1.5 m were described, summarized in a scatter plot of height/length ratio and thus compared to dunes observed on other shelves. The dunes orientation corresponded to the overall South China Sea circulation pattern during the winter monsoon. Therefore, the possibility of dunes mobilisation was investigated with the help of empirical equations predicting sediment transport. Depth-integrated velocities necessary to put sediment forming dunes in motion were calculated for distinguished zones. The results were discussed with hydrodynamic in-situ measurements of other authors and it was concluded that most of the investigated dunes were likely to migrate actively following the monsoon circulation. A case study from the Baltic Sea is a rare example of an investigation focused on changes in the morphology of pits created by anchor hopper dredging of marine sand and gravel aggregates. By means of sidescan sonar and multi-beam echosounder data, a six-year evolution of four pits was presented. In the case of three pits dredged in a sandy seabed faster smoothing of edges and infilling rates larger than in the case of a pit dredged in gravel were clearly observed. The edges of the gravel pit were expanding due to collapsing of the side-walls. The infilling of the pit was investigated based on approximations of pit depth by single- and multi-beam echosoundings, as well as acoustic shade length in the sonographs. Earlier studies of other authors on this pit allowed plotting a curve of infilling rate over six years of pit evolution. The filling clearly slowed down over time and the reasons for that are discussed in this paper. The sand screened in the dredging process surrounded the investigated pit and its backscatter values in sonographs clearly separate it from the gravel seabed. The area covered by the screened sand fraction was monitored and appeared to be decreasing in time. Hydrological data showed the possibility of frequent mobilisation of this fraction and therefore indicated it as the main source for pit infilling. A case study from the North Sea presents a unique approach of conversion analogue sidescan sonar data into digital, geo-referenced form in order to present morphological stability and birth of sorted bedforms. The analogue mosaic was geo-coded in a DECCA navigation system in 1977. DECCA system technology was described thoroughly and a study of the spatial errors was presented for accurate geo-referencing of the mosaic. Image warping by rubber-sheeting method was performed to compare old sonographs of a sorted bedform with sonographs from 2002. A continuation study of Dr. Markus Diesing et al. additionally contains a multi-beam backscatter mosaic from 2003 as a comparison data-set. The morphological stability of the bedforms over time was discussed in the paper and compared to worldwide examples. Hydrodynamic conditions influencing the bedforms were presented and a significant role of the tidal currents in shaping the sorted bedforms was demonstrated. An asymmetry of a newly appeared sorted bedform, however, was probably related rather to high energy storm events. Even though the sidescan sonar data were collected from three different seas for three different case studies in three different scales, sonographs proved to be a valuable tool in each of the cases. Minor limitations of sidescan sonar systems and options for applying other devices for the same types of investigations are discussed in the end of this work. Während des Zweiten Weltkrieges wurde für militärische Zwecke zum Aufspüren feindlicher Unterseeboote, die die sich bewegungslos auf dem Meeresgrund versteckten, ein seitwärts schauendes Sonar als Fortentwicklung des vorwärts schauenden Sonars gebaut. Eine unerwartete Karriere dieses Seitensicht-Sonars begann mit seiner Einführung in der Marinen Geologie. Die Fähigkeit des Sonars, die Sedimentrauhigkeit und infolgedessen die Korngröße zu erkennen, eröffnete bedeutende Möglichkeiten in der Sedimentkartierung mit einer räumlich besseren Auflösung als sie durch Probennahmen zu erreichen ist. Zusätzlich erlaubt ein akustischer Schatten, der durch bodennahes Überfahren von Vertiefungen und Erhebungen verursacht wird, eine einfachere Interpretation der Morphologie des Meeresgrundes. Diese revolutionären Eigenschaften öffneten neue Wege der Unterwassererforschung. Einige multidisziplinäre Anwendungen von Sonographen auf Kontinentalsockeln werden in der Einleitung zu dieser Arbeit neben technischen Besonderheiten des Seitensicht-Sonar-Systems und Implikationen bei der Verarbeitung von Sonographie-Daten beschrieben. Die Hauptzielsetzung dieser Arbeit ist es, drei Fallstudien der Anwendung eines Seitensicht-Sonars in Meeresgrunddynamikstudien darzustellen. Jede der Studien wurde für anerkannte Journale verfasst oder angenommen, der einleitende Teil dieser Arbeit ist eine beschreibende Ergänzung der Informationen in den vorgestellten Veröffentlichungen. Eine Fallstudie am Südvietnamesischen Kontinentalsockel ist auf die Kartierung der Sanddünen auf der Basis nicht zusammengesetzter Sonographie-Daten ausgerichtet. Es ist die erste Untersuchung von Bodenformen in diesem Gebiet, enthält jedoch nur Daten vom Ende des Wintermonsuns. Der Schelfbereich wurde in fünf Zonen eingeteilt, um Dünen ähnlicher Größe, Form und Orientierung zu gruppieren. Alle lokalisierten Sanddünen mit einer Höhe größer als 1.5 m wurden beschrieben und in ihrem höhen/längen Verhältnis in einem Scatterplot dargestellt, und auf diese Weise mit Dünen auf anderen Schelfen verglichen. Die Düneorientierung entspricht dem allgemeinen Zirkulationsschema der Südchinesischen See während des Wintermonsuns. Die Möglichkeit der Dünenmobilisierung wurde mit Hilfe empirischer Sedimenttransportgleichungen untersucht. Tiefengemittelte Strömungs­geschwindigkeiten, notwendig um Sedimente zur Bildung von Dünen in Bewegung zu setzen wurden berechnet. Die errechneten Ergebnisse wurden mit hydrodynamischen In-Situ Messungen anderer Autoren verglichen und es wurde gefolgert, dass die meisten untersuchten Dünen aktiv entsprechend der Monsunzirkulation wandern. Eine Fallstudie in der Ostsee ist ein seltenes Beispiel einer Untersuchung von Änderungen in der Morphologie von Gruben, die durch Nassbaggern von Marinen Sanden und Kiesen entstandenen sind. Mittels Seitensicht-Sonar und Fächerecholot-Daten wurde die Entwicklung von vier Gruben über sechs Jahre dargestellt. Im Falle dreier Gruben in sandigem Untergrund konnte eine deutlich höhere Abrundungsrate der Kanten und Sedimentation in den Gruben beobachtet werden als dies bei der Grube im Kiesbett der Fall war. Die Ränder der Grube im Kies änderten sich durch Abrutschen der Seitenwände. Sedimentation in den Gruben wurde basierend auf Näherungswerten der Grubetiefe durch Single-Beam-Echolot und Fächerecholot-Messungen, sowie akustische Schattenlänge in den Sonographie-Daten untersucht. Frühere Studien anderer Autoren an diesen Gruben ermöglichten es, die Sedimentationsrate über sechs Jahre darzustellen. Die Sedimentationsrate verlangsamte sich mit der Zeit deutlich, die Gründe hierfür werden in diesem Paper dargestellt. Der Sand, der während des Nassbaggerns ausgesiebt wurde, konnte im Umkreis der untersuchten Grube nachgewiesen werden, das Echo in den Sonographie-Daten war deutlich von dem des kiesigen Meeresgrundes zu unterscheiden. Der Bereich, der durch die ausgesiebte Sandfraktion bedeckt wurde, wurde beobachtet und verringerte sich mit der Zeit. Hydrologische Daten zeigen die Möglichkeit einer häufigen Mobilisierung dieser Sandfraktion, wodurch diese als hauptsächliche verantwortliche Quelle für die Sedimentation in den Gruben ausgemacht werden kann. Eine Fallstudie in der Nordsee stellt einen einmaligen Ansatz der Umwandlung von analogen Seitensicht-Sonar-Daten in digitale, georeferenzierte Form dar, um die morphologische Stabilität und die Entstehung von sortierten Bodenformen darzustellen. Das analoge Mosaik wurde 1977 im DECCA Navigationssystem geo-kodiert. Die DECCA System Technologie wurde gänzlich beschrieben und für die genaue Georeferenzierung des Mosaiks wurde eine Studie der räumlichen Fehler präsentiert. Eine Anpassung des Bildes wurde per “rubber – sheeting“ Methode durchgeführt um historische Sonographie-Daten sortierter Bodenformen mit neuen Sonographie-Daten von 2002 zu vergleichen. Eine nachfolgende Studie von Dr. Markus Diesing et al. enthält zusätzlich ein “multi-beam backscattering“ Mosaik von 2003 als vergleichendes Material. Die morphologische Stabilität der Bodenformen über die Zeit wird in dem Paper besprochen und mit weltweiten Beispielen verglichen. Die hydrodynamischen Umgebungsbedingungen der Bodenformen wurden dargestellt und eine bedeutende Rolle der Gezeiten-Strömungen auf diese festgestellt. Eine Asymmetrie neu entstandener sortierter Bodenformen hing vermutlich mit Sturmereignissen hoher Energie zusammen. Obwohl die Seitensicht-Sonar-Daten in drei unterschiedlichen Meeren für drei unterschiedliche Untersuchungen und in drei unterschiedlichen Maßstäben gesammelt wurden, waren die Sonographie-Daten in jedem der Fälle ein wertvolles Hilfsmittel. Die kleineren Beschränkungen von Seitensicht-Sonar-Systemen und die Möglichkeit der Anwendung anderer Systemen für die gleichen Studien werden im Ende dieser Arbeit diskutiert.

(Keine Zusammenfassung in deutscher Sprache hinterlegt.) Regional atmospheric modelling results for the northern North Atlantic in the Last Glacial Maximum are presented. The forcing global modelling followed in most aspects the Paleoclimate Modelling Intercomparison Project boundary conditions. The regional modelling almost reproduce the forcing data, considering the monthly background circulation, the monthly variability of circulation and the surface-near wind. In addition, the regional model's higher resolution lead to the following improvements upon the forcing data: (1) in some cases precipitation over the Greenland-Iceland-Norway-Sea is more realistic; (2) more detailed katabatic winds were modelled and in the February experiments they were stronger; (3) partly orographic precipitation is stronger; (4) no spectral artefacts in the precipitation occur off the Norwegian coast.
