The article offers information on the collections of the William L. Clements Library at the University of Michigan related to U.S. military history. Historical documents discussed include official correspondence from New York governor George Clinton, a diary from lieutenant Jehu Hay, a statistical record of the Continental Army under the command of general George Washington, and the papers and correspondence of British general Thomas Gage.

Abstract

The article provides information on the collection of the resources for labor history in the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. The resources gathered are the result of the first attempt to document the rise of industrial democracy in the U.S. The plan of labor historian and economist Richard T. Ely to write a comprehensive history of industrial society was thwarted by scattered and inaccessible source materials. Due to that problem, Ely collected documents on the labor movement even after he joined the University of Wisconsin faculty in 1892.

Abstract

Chapter 51 of the book "Happy Days" is presented. Adrian Plimsoll sold his shares of the family's glue business and followed the life of a gentleman and a patron of the arts. He began collecting ink pots but his acquisition of one of Queen Elizabeth's inkstands started the "Plimsoll Collection." Taking shelter in a small cottage while waiting for a storm to pass, he discovers an old bracelet that belonged to the Emperor. He buys the bracelet for one-and-sixpence.

5. Measures of Effectiveness for a University Library.

Abstract

Two measures of effectiveness for university libraries are constructed. The Primary Measure of Effectiveness, defined over the total population of users, considers the number of material and information items desired by the users, the number of satisfactorily answered inquiries, and the number of users. For the Secondary Measure of Effectiveness, the total population is classified into subsets according to similarity of user needs.
