This article focus on the visit of the author to Serbia & Montenegro. On the journey into Montenegro author drove through the famous delta land of Popovo Poije, the richest area of the Adriatic coast. Here had occurred some of the worst massacres of Serbs by the Ustachi. The country was much like the French or the Italian Riviera, with palm trees, vines, cypresses, olive groves, and prosperous-looking villas. Before long we reached Dubrovnik, Croatia the old Ragusa, for centuries the rival of Venice on the Adriatic-a walled city with a. magnificent piazza and baroque churches, which looked like a piece of Daly transplanted to Yugoslav soil.

The downfall of fascism in Italy has provoked repercussions throughout the Balkans--and particularly in Croatia. The abandonment of the Croatian throne by the Duke of Spoleto, is the latest indication that the entire system of Italian domination has collapsed. The Germans have taken over the so-called independent state and transformed it into a republic. On April 15, 1943 both Italy and Germany recognized the Independent State of Croatia, although its frontiers had not yet been established. On April 17, 1942 fascist Ante Pavelich dissolved all political parties and organized a government with every characteristic of an Italian vassal.

The article presents author's opinion on American literature at a conference. According to the author the University of Zagreb, the English department is the second largest in the liberal arts college. The word raised a titter in the crowded lecture hall, per- haps because "beatnik" sounds almost Serbo-Croatian. Also perhaps because the state of mind it suggests seemed exotic in a police state which of late is relaxing its discipline, and now makes welcome at least some foreign ideas, but which still cannot afford or even imagine a domestic crop of "dharma bums."

An appalling situation in the Serb kingdom seems rapidly to be coming to a head. The country, like its neighbors, is broke, and has had to default on or put off its foreign debt. The new constitution has turned out to be almost unworkable as the overt dictatorship, and the Serb-Croat quarrel is as bitter as ever. The Slovenes and Bosnians, heretofore fairly tractable, have joined the Croats in their demand for federalism, and the king, the chief centripetal force of the state, is apparently no longer able personally to bridge the various widening schisms. For a whole series of perplexing foreign irritations has developed, doubtless in correspondence to the ascending domestic alarms. Some Dalmatian hotheads mutilated the old Venetian lions in Trogir.
