Zealous anti-Catholic Protestants were not just born; they were also formed through children's fear of violence and supposed fascination with it. This article offers a close examination of the magazines promoted by anti-Ritualist Protestant youth organizations demonstrates that sharing stories about the dangers of Catholicism was a common method of binding children of both genders more closely to their parents' theological subculture. Great Britain developed a new way of thinking increasingly based upon the possession of material goods. The Great Exhibition of 1851 marked a pivotal moment crystallizing the transformation of the advertising industry and forming a commodity culture. Later advertising became the coordinating frame within which very different forms of social life were grouped. This article is concerned with a particular aspect of advertising: the prize book, a book given as an award by an educational or religious institution to disseminate approved fiction to children. Prize-book catalogues from six major prize-book publishing houses of the early twentieth century are used to explore how prize books were marketed to educators in Edwardian Britain, how boys and girls were framed by the advertisements, and how differences existed between secular and religious publishers, revealing insights into gender ideologies in the Edwardian period. Netta Syrett is a neglected writer of the 1890s, undeservedly so because of the range of her literary associations, her involvement with The Yellow Book from its inception to its end, and the quality of her work. She wrote thirty-eight novels and twenty children's books. Her experience in the theatre embodied the censorious attitude towards "daring" plays by women which inhibited the progress of New Women's writing for the stage. Here for the first time is a full account of the story of Syrett's play The Finding of Nancy. Despite her many successful works, there has been no full-length biography.
