Abstract

The article discusses the lack of Spanish language bilingual books for use in schools and what can be done to increase their publication. The authors state that Latino children and Hispanic culture are often not adequately represented in the textbooks and materials that Latino students use in schools. The authors also contends that Latino students need to be able to see their culture and values represented accurately in order to feel a sense of belonging. The authors analyze issues within the Spanish bilingual book publishing industry.

Abstract

The article analyzes deaf characters from a deaf culture perspective in a children's literature, as well as provide a bibliography of recommended and not recommended books. As part of the multicultural society, deaf community has its own beliefs, values, heritage, and traditions. It is a fact that in most deaf-hearing relationship, disadvantages always go to the deaf. A classic example is when deaf children have hearing parents, oppression happens when these parents took over the decision-making from their deaf children.

Abstract

This article presents information about several books about Latinos for children and adolescents. The book "Market Day: A Story Told With Folk Art," by Lois Ehlert describes the Latin American folk art. At the market, people buy and sell, work and play, until they return home ready to eat. Especially alluring are the vibrant double-spread tableaux filled with toys, baskets, textiles, and other images from Mexico, Guatemala, Colombia, Panama, Bolivia, and elsewhere in Latin America. The other book "Eight Animals on the Town," by Susan Middleton Elya, depicts eight animals as they travel to the market to find their supper and end up dancing all night long. art and customs. From exquisite Mexican village scenes to authentic market sites and lively party and surreal rural settings, these illustrations are pure fun. The only caveat in what could have been a most engaging selection for bilingual readers or Spanish-language learners is the absence of the Spanish definite articles, which must agree in number and gender with the noun they accompany and are used very frequently.

This article presents information about activities and events taking place in the field of art and culture. ABC-CLIO schools has linked its abstracting and indexing databases, historical abstracts and America: history and life, with refworks, the new web-based bibliographic management tool. Barahona center for the study of books in Spanish for children and adolescents opened the doors to its new and spacious 10,000-square-foot facility on the fifth floor of the Kellogg Library at California State University, San Marcos. The board of directors of the Cross Cultural Health Care Program (CCHCP) announced in March 2004, the appointment of Ira Sengupta as executive director. She will take over the leadership of the program as it begins a strategic planning process intended to expand the range of services CCHCP offers to bridge the gaps in understanding that separate immigrant and refugee communities from the American health care system. "Skipping Stones," magazine and its committee of reviewers-editors, librarians, parents, teachers, and students-have selected this year's list of outstanding titles for children and educators.
