The article compares and contrasts the American Ballet Theatre (ABT) and the New York City Ballet (NYCB). It classifies the ABT as a museum and the NYCB as a living academy. The ABT looks backward while the NYCB derives its continued vitality from the production of new choreography that illuminates and enhances its evolving traditions. The term classical ballet is defined in two ways. The abstract neoclassical style strips out the classical ballet's potential of charging the dancing itself. The neoclassical styles is distinguished from the classical in allegro.
