It explores how the sanitary commission which was demanded by Mr. Singleton, solve the increasing rate of sickness and deaths brought by the epidemic diphtheria to the inmates inside the prison cells. It also recounts how Beryl insists to Mr. Singleton and Doctor Moffat her willingness to assist in nursing patient inmates. It highlights Beryl's act of heroism, generosity and sympathy for the inmates.
Chapter 14 of the book "History of the Warfare of Science with Theology in Christendom," by Andrew Dickson White is presented. It focuses on the ancient theological views related to epidemics and sanitation and states that epidemics were considered as the wrath of unseen powers. It mentions about gradual decay in the ancient beliefs regarding sanitation and development of sanitary science and discusses the change in the attitude of the Church towards the cause and cure of epidemics.
