The article presents an encyclopedia entry for emesis. Emesis refers to the forceful involuntary expulsion of the stomach contents through the mouth. The number of ways to initiate the vomiting reflex are mentioned, including stimulation of sensory receptors in the alimentary canal. The act of anticipatory vomiting that may occur during cancer therapy is discussed. The clinical aspects of emesis are outlined.
