This book, a commentary on becoming a teacher, presents a set of essays based on observations of a group of young, white, middle class female teachers learning what it means to be alone at the head of the classroom. It presents a textured picture of the development of competence. The picture is organized around the complications of ordinary life in a classroom for these new teachers. They have had little experience with exercising authority and are not sure how to do it. They have to learn how to act as teachers--how to speak, dress, think, manage themselves and their classrooms, confront emotions, deal with parents and administrators, and react to a role and to situations that are different in important ways from what they expected and from what their experience had been. It is often overlooked that fitness is a multidimensional concept, and that its components are context-specific. The multifaceted nature of fitness is most evident in cultural/creative industries, because firms are confronted with the challenge of balancing seemingly conflicting needs: artistic performance and commercial imperatives have to be satisfied for long term survival. In this study we examine two important component-traits that make up the fitness function for the Hollywood motion picture industry, which we argue are human capital and network capital. Although many studies have recognized the critical role of ‘creative' human capital — which is typically embedded in individuals and groups — and network capital — that is, inter-organizational networks — we do not have many studies that empirically analyze their complex relationships using large scale data sets. We situate the analysis within the period 1992-2003, one in which we have good data and the industry appears relatively stable and very productive. While still exploratory, our paper shows how such human capital and network resources interact with the structure of the industry and influence different dimensions of the fitness function. We show how the traits work differently on the different dimensions of fitness to create a dynamic tension between creativity and performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fuel cell stack systems are under intensive development for mobile and stationary power applications. In particular, Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) Fuel Cells (also known as Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells) are currently in a more mature stage for ground vehicle applications. This paper proposes a theoretical innovative approach to the analysis of the electrochemical transient behavior (anode-cathode). The transient behavior due to the electrochemical dynamic may impact the behavior of the resulting load current. Boundary conditions influence the resulting electric field, the boundary condition are strongly depending of H2 and O2 physical parameters. Maxwell's equations are used in order to describe the model. Solutions through dyadic harmonic wavelets at different levels of resolution are presented. Wavelets approach, through their different space-time levels of resolution, can favorable describe the segmented space structure of the stack. Wavelets give significant information on the evolution of a time series. In particular, due to their localization properties the significant local changes in observed data (both in time and in frequency) can be easily detected by a limited set of their corresponding wavelet coefficients. The problem of the evolution of solitary profile having the form of a Shannon wavelet is considered as solution of a generalization of the Burger equation. The stability of cylindrical precession of the dynamically symmetric satellite in the Newtonian gravitational field is studied. We consider the case when a center of mass of the satellite moves in an elliptic orbit, while the satellite rotates uniformly about the axis of its dynamical symmetry that is perpendicular to the orbit plane. In the case of the resonance 3:2 (Mercury type resonance) we have found the domains of instability of cylindrical precession of the satellite in the Liapunov sense and domains of its linear stability in the parameter space. Using the infinite determinant method we have calculated analytically the boundaries of the domains of instability as power series in the eccentricity of the orbit. The problem of solitary wave propagation in dispersive media is considered. The nonlinear equation (hyperbolic modification of Burger's one) in presence of a dispersive propagation law, give rise to nonlinear effects as the breaking down of the wave into localized chaotic oscillations. We give an axiomatic category theoretic account of bisimulation in process algebras based on the idea of functional bisimulations as open maps. We work with 2-monads, T, on Cat. Operations on processes, such as nondeterministic sum, prefixing and parallel composition are modelled using functors in the Kleisli category for the 2-monad T. We may define the notion of open map for any such 2-monad; in examples of interest, that agrees exactly with the usual notion of functional bisimulation. Under a condition on T, namely that it be a dense KZ-monad, which we define, it follows that functors in Kl(T) preserve open maps, i.e., they respect functional bisimulation. We further investigate structures on Kl(T) that exist for axiomatic reasons, primarily because T is a dense KZ-monad, and we study how those structures help to model operations on processes. We outline how this analysis gives ideas for modelling higher order processes. We conclude by making comparison with the use of presheaves and profunctors to model process calculi. Recent work has shown that presheaf categories provide a general model of concurrency, with an inbuilt notion of bisimulation based on open maps. Here it is shown how this approach can also handle systems where the language of actions may change dynamically as a process evolves. The example is the π-calculus, a calculus for ‘mobile processes' whose communication topology varies as channels are created and discarded. A denotational semantics is described for the π-calculus within an indexed category of profunctors; the model is fully abstract for bisimilarity, in the sense that bisimulation in the model, obtained from open maps, coincides with the usual bisimulation obtained from the operational semantics of the π-calculus.
