In addition to air travel, transportation between China and other countries takes place via railways, ships, and roads, although none of these is very well developed.

The article informs that the dramatic developments that have taken place in air transport in the recent past at the regulatory level and the level of the firm have been interpreted as evidence that the industry is experiencing globalization. Trade between countries has increasingly been replaced by foreign direct investment, as companies have become internationalized in production, management and marketing, and as they seek new markets and cheap labor, and "regime shop." Growing larger and larger, as they reap economies of scale and scope, these internationalized firms become transnational corporations (TNCs), genuinely "stateless firms," which can shift their activities around the globe effortlessly. The emergence and growth of TNCs, perhaps developing out of multinational corporations (MNCs), are facilitated by the globalization of consumer tastes, the internationalization of financial markets and the explosion of foreign currency markets--developments which have been made possible by the spread of new advanced communications systems. Aviation has witnessed very considerable change since the late 1970s both at the level of government policy and commercial strategy. A growing number of governments have implemented more or less far-reaching programmes of liberalization, deregulation and privatization, and airlines have been forced to respond to the new regulatory environment, new imperatives and new opportunities with varying degrees of enthusiasm and success.

This article reports that the emotion management that sustains the smile on Delta Air Lines Inc. competes with the emotion management that upholds the smile on United Airlines Inc. and TWA. What was once a private act of emotion management is sold now as labor in public-contact jobs. Emotional exchanges that were once idiosyncratic and escapable are now standardized and unavoidable. Exchanges that were rare in private life become common in commercial life. It does not take capitalism to turn feeling into a commodity or to turn the capacity for managing feeling into an instrument. But capitalism has found a use for emotion management, and so it has organized it more efficiently and pushed it further. This sense of emotional numbness reduces stress by reducing access to the feelings through which stress introduces itself. Estrangement from display, from feeling, and from what feelings can tell people is not simply the occupational hazard of a few. It has firmly established itself in the culture as permanently imaginable.

This article reports that rules about how to feel and how to express feeling are set by management. As enlightened management realizes, a separation of display and feeling is hard to keep up over long periods. A principle of emotive dissonance, analogous to the principle of cognitive dissonance, is at work. Maintaining a difference between feeling and feigning over the long run leads to strain. Corporate logic in the airline industry creates a series of links between competition, market expansion, advertising, heightened passenger expectations about rights to display, and company demands for acting. "A market for emotional labor" is not a phrase that company employees use. Upper management talks about getting the best market share of the flying public. Advertising personnel talk about reaching that market. The more important service becomes as an arena for competition between airlines, the more workers are asked to do public relations work to promote sales.

This article focuses on various radio navigation schemes. A key function of navigation is the estimation of current position of a vessel. The reception of radio signals from transmitters whose location is known is a common means of implementing the position estimation functions. The accuracy of each navigation scheme is dependent upon the particular implementation. Rho-rho systems are based on distance measuring equipment (DME) that determines the position of an aircraft using two or more distance values. DME is a transponder system combining both airborne and ground equipment to provide distance information.

The article presents information on air carrier operations in the U.S. Air carrier operations are those scheduled flights that carry passengers or cargo for a fee. More than 8 million air carrier departures were recorded in 1996. Air carrier operations include the major airlines, national carriers, smaller regional airlines, and cargo carriers. Military air traffic from all defense organizations also uses the civilian air traffic control system. The intermixture of civilian and military traffic needs to be controlled by a single system to ensure safe operations.

An introduction to the book, Contextualizing Transition: Interviews with Contemporary Russian Writers & Critics, is presented, featuring some social changes that have occurred in Moscow, Russia from 1995 to 1996. A visitor begins to be exposed to these changes on arriving at Sheremetevo airport, where passengers frequently hear announcements in English about the arrivals and departures of foreign flights. The airport rules are now the same with the West. Russians are dressed in Western-style clothing. Information on the Single European Sky, a project for the harmonisation of air traffic across the European Union (EU) is presented. The project, which involves several legislative measures, was proposed by the European Commission (EC) in 2001. The commercial air transport of the EU market has been open since 1997. The problem of the control of military aviation by the Member States of the EU have to be solved.

A definition of the term "Exchange of Mixed Traffic over X.25" (EMTOX) is presented. It refers to a standard for transmitting airline protocol data using standard X.25 switched virtual circuits (SVCs).

This article features several types of flying machines. Today, the biggest passenger airliners are known as wide-bodied jets. Wide-bodied aircraft, such as the latest 747s, can carry more than 600 passengers for very long distances without stopping to refuel. Small planes that carry just a few passengers are known as light aircraft. Bahrain is a major air transportation hub for the Middle East region, and together with the governments of Qatar, Oman, and Abu Dhabi (part of the United Arab Emirates), it operates an international airline called Gulf Air.
