Abstract

Summary: This book consists of original and review papers which describe basic and applied studies for the modifications of metallic and inorganic materials by using energetic ion/electron beams. When materials are irradiated with energetic charged particles (ions /electrons), their energies are transferred to electrons and atoms in materials, and the lattice structures of the materials are largely changed to metastable or non-thermal-equilibrium states, modifying several physical properties. Such phenomena will engage the interest of researchers as a basic science, and can also be used as promising tools for adding new functionalities to existing materials and for the development of novel materials. The papers in this book cover the ion/electron-beam-induced modifications of several properties (optical, electronic, magnetic, mechanical, and chemical properties) and lattice structures. This book will, therefore, be useful for many scientists and engineers who have been involved in fundamental material science and the industrial applications of metallic and inorganic materials.

Abstract

Summary: This Special Issue aimed to cover the new developments in the synthesis and characterization of magnetic nanoconstructs ranging from conventional metal oxide nanoparticles to novel molecule-based or hybrid multifunctional nano-objects. At the same time, the focus was on the potential of these novel magnetic nanoconstructs in several possible applications, e.g. sensing, energy storage, and nanomedicine.

6. ELECTROCHEMICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF Ni-Mo AND Ni-Mo + PENi COATINGS AS MATERIALS FOR HYDROGEN EVOLUTION.

Abstract

The Ni-Mo + PENi coatings were prepared from a galvanic nickel-molybdenum bath containing a suspension of polyethylene subjected to preliminary nickel plating (PENi). Surface morphology was examined using scanning electron microscope. Electrocatalytic properties for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) were investigated on polyethylene-modified Ni-Mo coatings in 5 M KOH, using steady-state polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy methods. Based on the obtained results parameters of hydrogen evolution process have been determined. The value of a rate constant is almost five times higher for the coating with polymer than for the Ni-Mo alloy. Therefore, it was found that the process proceeds better on the coatings containing an embedded PENi than on the Ni-Mo coatings. Thus obtained coatings may be useful in application as electrode materials for the hydrogen evolution reaction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aluminum wires are electrochemically etched into bi-directional anodic alumina (AAO) templates for the growth and contacting of nanowires as three terminal devices. The use of this nanostructured template is shown by a ZnO nanowire surrounding gate field-effect transistor. 8. Electrodeposition of Bi1−xSbx Nanowires as an Advanced Material for Thermoelectric Applications.

Abstract

This paper focuses on the electrodeposition of high density nanowire arrays in porous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) templates. A two step anodization technique was used to develop a template for Bi1-xSbx nanowire growth directly on Si substrates. Uniform pores with virtually no grain boundaries were achieved. Fundamental electrochemistry experiments on Bi3+, Sb3+, and both cations in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) were carried out to characterize the ideal chronopotential pulse and to determine the thermodynamic, diffusion and mass transport issues when plating Bi1-xSbx into nano dimension pore structures. Such chronopotentiometry resulted in uniform nanowire growth within porous channels of the AAO template. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
