Abstract

Summary: The interest in biofuel production and application is governed by the depletion of fossil fuel resources and the threatening pollution of the atmosphere because of the extensive emissions of greenhouse gases, which the present global vegetation cannot cope with. A remedy against the greenhouse gas emissions is the use of biomass presently grown as a source for biofuels. Biofuels can be further utilized as substrates for bulk chemical products. This approach is known as the biorefinery concept as an analogue to the oil-based refineries.The present book offers some examples and new ideas for the broader applications of biofuels and the resulting raw materials for energy and chemical products as alternatives to the traditional fossil fuels.

Abstract

Summary: After almost two decades of continuous development in bio, circular, and green economy, the time is ripe for the assessment of the major achievements and challenges that private and public enterprises face today to further enhance these global sustainability concepts. Due to the central role of political incentives for the development and implementation of environmentally friendly and sustainable practices, the present book project focuses on the nexus between public policies, institutions, quality of public sector management, and patterns of interaction between government and private businesses in backing bio, green, and circular economy practices and eco-innovation. In addition, the project also accommodates surveys that elaborate on the differences between the implementation of new organizational forms and scientific innovations in technologically advanced and developing settings.

Abstract

Summary: Energy management systems (EMSs) are nowadays considered one of the most relevant technical solutions for enhancing the efficiency, reliability, and economy of smart micro/nanogrids, both in terrestrial and vehicular applications. For this reason, the recent technical literature includes numerous technical contributions on EMSs for residential/commercial/vehicular micro/nanogrids that encompass renewable generators and battery storage systems (BSS) The volume "Energy Management Systems for Optimal Operation of Electrical Micro/Nanogrids", was released as a Special Issue of the journal Energies, published by MDPI, with the aim of expanding the knowledge on EMSs for the optimal operation of electrical micro/nanogrids by presenting topical and high-quality research papers that address open issues in the identified technical field. The volume is a collection of seven research papers authored by research teams from several countries, where different hot topics are accurately explored. The reader will have the possibility to benefit from original scientific results concerning, in particular, the following key topics: distribution systems; smart home/building; battery energy storage; demand uncertainty; energy forecasting; model predictive control; real-time control, microgrid planning; and electrical vehicles.

4. An Investigation of the Coal Demand in China Based on Variable Weight Combination Forecasting Model.

Abstract

Variable weight combination forecasting combines the individual forecasting models after giving them proper weights at each time point. Weight is the kind of function which changes with the forecast time. A relatively rational description of objective fact of the system can be proposed with the forecasting method which is a higher precision and a better stability. Two individual forecasting models, the Grey system forecasting and the multiple regression forecasting, are constituted based on the historical data and the influencing factors of the coal demand in China from 1981 to 2008 in this paper. And based on the theory of combination forecasting, the variable weight combination forecasting model is formulated for the coal demand to forecast the coal demand of China in the coming 12 years. 5. Can Energy Technologies Provide Energy Security And Climate Change Mitigation?

Abstract

In spite of all the low carbon technologies, climate change mitigation policies, and high energy prices since the IPCC 3rd Assessment Report in 2001, greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise, and in many regions accelerate. Energy related carbon dioxide emissions, currently over 28 Gt CO2/ year, could exceed 40 Gt CO2/year by 2030 under business as usual. To keep mean global temperature rise below 2.4°C above pre-industrial levels would require stabilisation around 450 ppm CO2-eq, although this target is becoming very challenging to achieve. The CO2 concentration is already at 380 ppm CO2. Existing technologies and those close to commercialisation have the potential to reduce CO2 emissions, the amount depending on the future price of carbon. The total global economic potential in 2030 for up to US$50/t CO2-eq is between 14–23 Gt CO2-eq/year with the energy supply sector having a potential of between 3–6.4 Gt CO2-eq/year and the potential uptake of energy efficient technologies in the buildings, industry and transport sectors contributing 9–11 Gt CO2-eq/year. Deeper reductions are needed to meet the desired 450 ppm CO2-eq target, requiring social change and strong political measures to be enacted. The cost of achieving this goal is likely to be a small percentage of total GDP, but only if stringent measures are taken now. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
