The geek is male. Or so it seems. As is well documented, there is a distinct under-representation of girls studying computing at high school level and, correspondingly, going on to have careers in IT. To address this problem, in 2007 the authors of this book, with backgrounds in secondary teaching or IT, trialled a new and revolutionary program in schools: "Digital Divas." The Digital Divas program, based on the idea that it was possible to change girls' perceptions of IT careers with educationally sound materials that tapped into their interests and were delivered in all-girl classes within the school curriculum, was a great success. In Digital Divas: Putting the Wow into Computing for Girls, Fisher, Lang, Craig and Forgasz recount what they did and how they did it, and reflect on the significance of this program, which has indisputably led to an increased self-sufficiency with IT amongst girls, challenged stereotypical understandings of IT as a male activity, and increased the pursuit of IT careers by young women.This title was made Open Access by libraries from around the world through Knowledge Unlatched.

Today, the average consumer is comfortable browsing a web site using a desktop, laptop or kiosk computer. However, this is changing a rapid rate as more and more consumers access the same web content using a small screen device such as a mobile phone or personal digital assistant (PDA). Regardless of the consumers' expertise with the mobile device, the experience is becoming frustrating as they try to navigate their way through web content that has been designed for a large screen; a design that results in cumbersome layout, slow-loading images and ‘off-screen' navigation points when viewed on a small screen device. The result is dissatisfaction on part of the consumer, and possible loss of revenue for an e-business enterprise. The main objective of this paper is to highlight several techniques and technologies that are currently available that can assist in displaying ‘user-friendly' web pages regardless of the screen size of the device. In this chapter we review the knowledge-based view on decision support and argue the emergence of a new type of intelligent decision support system — an intelligent gateway for supporting specific knowledge needs. The modern view on decision support and expert systems has shifted from considering these as purely analytical tools for assessing best-decision options to seeing them as a more comprehensive environment for supporting efficient information processing based on a good understanding of the problem context. Such intelligent decision support systems incorporate problem-domain knowledge to improve their information processing and provision capabilities. More recently, information portals have been proposed as tools for matching users' information needs in order to enhance their decision-making ability. This chapter looks at portals as new types of intelligent decision support systems, which use problem-domain knowledge in order to improve efficiency in information provision. The main focus of the chapter is on suggesting mechanisms for implementing intelligent decision support capabilities in a healthcare portal, which seeks to deliver personalized information to support efficient decision making.
