Zero-field 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy has been used to study the magnetic properties of an amorphous melt-spun Pd40Ni40−xFexP20 (x=5, 10, 17.5, 20) series. The alloys show quadrupole split doublets at room temperature indicating paramagnetic behaviour. At low temperatures the Mössbauer spectra are sextets due to the onset of long range order. The transition temperatures increase with Fe concentration from 12±2 K for Pd40Ni35Fe5P20 to 42.0±2.0 K for Pd40Ni20Fe20P20. The hyperfine field was found to follow Hf(0)(1−T/Tc)β over the critical region with the β exponent being close to 0.4. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Iron closely regulates the expression of the Alzheimer's Amyloid Precursor Protein (APP) gene at the level of message translation by a pathway similar to iron control of the translation of the ferritin L- and H mRNAs by Iron-responsive Elements in their 5′untranslated regions (5′UTRs). Using transfection based assays in SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells we tested the relative efficiency by which iron, copper and zinc up-regulate IRE activity in the APP 5′UTR. Desferrioxamine (high affinity Fe3+ chelator), (ii) clioquinol (low affinity Fe/Cu/Zn chelator), (iii) piperazine-1 (oral Fe chelator), (iv) VK-28 (oral Fe chelator), were tested for their relative modulation of APP 5′UTR directed translation of a luciferase reporter gene. Iron chelation based therapeutic strategies for slowing the progression of Alzheimer's disease (and other neurological disorders that manifest iron imbalance) are discussed with regard to the relative neural toxic action of each chelator in SH-SY5Y cells and in H4 glioblastoma cells. The "mad" vs "bad" debate raises fundamental difficulties for the interaction of psychiatry and the law. In one sense the separation of these two states is quite clear. Those who are mad are not responsible for their actions committed as a consequence of their mental state and should be located within treatment parameters on the grounds that their behavior is unlikely to have been conscious, intentional, and voluntary. On the other hand, those who are bad are handled within the confines of the criminal justice system with the prime object being punishment for their transgressions. These boundaries are not as discrete as they might at first appear. Should behavior be excessively depraved and grossly cruel then there is a temptation to add "evil" to the mix, as if this is the unifying link between the two. Although this term is readily invoked in the public domain, both lawyers and psychiatrists cannot escape the influence of ordinary fears and perceptions, especially when behavior is intransigent and resistant to management strategies. Information at a distance provided by vision is critical for adaptive human locomotion. In this paper we focus on which visually observable environmental features from the visual images on the retina are extracted and how they are coupled to changes in appropriate locomotion patterns. Studies related to environmental features that pose a danger to the mobile agent are described: these include obstacles; sliding doors and undesirable foot landing area in the travel path. Both static and dynamic environmental features result in changing optic flow patterns: environmental features that change independently pose an added challenge. The article discusses a study which attempted to reproduce the price index of U.S. periodicals for a Canadian academic library to identify Canadian concerns about the applicability of the index. The U.S. Periodicals Price Index is one of the well-known price indexes which targets the U.S. and British publishing markets. There has been an increasing concern about serial pricing from a Canadian perspective. Ninety-five percent of the serials budget of Canadian libraries is spent on titles published outside Canada. Publishers, vendors and libraries are called to develop price indexes by using established and shared standards.
