The problems of deferred maintenance and decaying campus infrastructure have troubled higher education for the past two decades. This book, designed to be a tool for facilities managers, describes a process for inspecting and reporting conditions of buildings and infrastructure. The audit process is meant to be a routine part of maintenance management so that application of the techniques described can be part of predictive methods of determining facilities management requirements and capital renewal and replacements programs. The first chapter introduces the facilities audit covering its purpose, structure, uses, users, how it relates to capital asset management, terminology, and how to adapt it for local needs. The process of preparing for an audit is described in chapter 2 including the program, the conditions inspection process, and use of functional performance evaluations. Chapter 3 discusses the design of the audit including determining its scope, selecting the audit team, planning the inspection, and information requirements. Data collection is covered in the fourth chapter which discusses conducting inspections and the inspection report forms. Chapter 5 is on summarizing inspection results including evaluating the inspection program, preparing summary reports, and planning future audits. The sixth chapter is on the final step of the audit process, presentation of the audit to management and others. Chapter 7 describes capital renewal: putting the audit to work (capital renewal planning, project priorization, resource allocation, and funding/planning). The organic carbon cycle operates on multiple time scales with a only small fraction of the global reservoir actively exchanged. For the marine system, the sources are principally recently synthesized material from autotrophic production which annually contribute 44-50 Pg/year of new organic carbon. This is supplemented by terrestrial carbon arriving from rivers, erosion and the atmosphere which contribute to the complex mixture present on oceanic waters. The focus of this review is to highlight the major sources or organic carbon and describe how the interaction of biological, chemical and physical processes provides an efficient mechanism for its eventual recycling. Discovering the historic structures in Olympic National Park may involve an automobile trip to a specific resort, a long drive to a remote trailhead, or the serendipitous discovery of a shelter, cabin, or chalet along a hiking trail. Olympic National Park historic structures show a remarkable consistency in materials and design. Whether this was conscious or accidental, private as well as public buildings were built on a scale and with materials appropriate for their surroundings.

This section presents information on Longmire Historic District located in Mount Rainier National Park in Lewis and Pierce Counties in Washington. What may appear to be a random collection of buildings, made of logs and shingles painted brown, is actually the Longmire Historic District, a group of National Park Service and concessioner structures significant in the interpretive history of Mount Rainier National Park. The horse "trains" run by the Longmires on the road they built between Ashford and the mineral springs reached a favorite destination at the wildflower-carpeted meadow and natural springs. A health-spa resort with a thirty-room hotel, cabins, tents, and bathhouses over the springs attracted visitors and played an important role in developing the land as a national park.

This section presents information on resorts and lodges located in Olympic National Park in Clallam, Jefferson and Mason Counties, Washington. Athough most of the early resort hotels bordering the shores of Lake Crescent are gone, two resort complexes dating from the lake's heyday during the Forest Reserve's first twenty years are still standing. Located at Barnes Point, Singer's Tavern (now the Lake Crescent Lodge) and Rosemary Inn both opened in 1915. Outside the park boundaries, on the south shore of Lake Quinault, the Quinault Lodge suggests the more elegant style of accommodations that were once available in the park. Twelve-mile-long Lake Crescent was one of the first sites in Olympic National Park to be developed as a resort area.
