33. A Simple Measurement Method of Visceral Fat Accumulation by Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis.

Abstract

Simple measurement of visceral fat accumulation is essential for diagnosis and treatment of metabolic syndrome. Bioelectrical impedance method is most suitable for theses measurements. However, measuring visceral fat volume without the influence of subcutaneous fat has been difficult because of the low spatial resolution of bioelectrical impedance method. In the present study, we have developed a simple method for the measurement of visceral fat accumulation using visceral fat bioelectrical impedance analysis (VF-BIA). For VF-BIA, an electric current (250 μA, 50 kHz) was applied to electrodes bilaterally fixed on the hands and feet, and the voltage was measured between six pairs of electrodes placed around the trunk at the umbilical level. The impedance reflects the total amount of abdomen fat, in addition to obtain the impedance of the body surface which reflects the amount of subcutaneous fat, the voltage induced by applying electric current to the electrodes placed on the body surface around the trunk at the umbilical level was measured with electrodes between the stimulating electrodes. 34. Stimulation of primary motor cortex for intractable deafferentation pain.

Abstract

To treat intractable deafferentation pains, we prefer stimulation of the primary motor cortex (M1). The methods of stimulation we utilize are electrical stimulation and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS). In our department, we first attempt rTMS, and if this rTMS is effective, we recommend the patient to undergo procedures for motor cortex stimulation (MCS). A 90% intensity of resting motor threshold setting is used for rTMS treatment. In this study ten trains of 5Hz rTMS for 10 seconds (50 seconds resting interval) were applied to the M1, S1, pre-motor and supplementary motor areas. Only M1 stimulation was effective for pain reduction in 10 of 20 patients (50%). Twenty-nine MCS procedures were performed by subdural implantation of electrodes, and in the case of hand or face pain, electrodes were implanted within the central sulcus (11 cases), because the main part of M1 is located in the central sulcus in humans. The success rate of MCS was around 63%, and seemed to be higher in cases of pain with spinal cord and peripheral origins, while it was lower in cases of post-stroke pain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

35. Mesenchymal stem cells in human wisdom tooth germs.

Abstract

We examined the immunohistochemical localization and isolation of mesenchymal stem cells in human wisdom tooth germs. Pericytes of blood vessels in the dental papilla and ameloblasts were stained strongly, but odontoblasts reacted weakly with STRO-1 and CD146. The STRO-1 positive cells represented approximately 7% of the total cell population. It is suggested that human wisdom tooth germs are useful for the stem cell treatment and the tissue engineering.
