The principle of the infrared thermal wave NDT is researched. According to the structural characteristics of the helicopter blade, the heat transfer process is analyzed. The method to differentiate the debonding region and the normal region is also proposed. The experiment of the infrared testing method is completed on a helicopter rail rotor blade with debonding damages. The thermogram and the peak amplitude image of the second derivative thermogram are both analyzed. The experiment shows that the infrared thermal wave testing method can effectively detect debonding flaws in some helicopter blades. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Absorption of infrared radiation by proteins gives important information about their structure and function. The most intense infrared bands correspond to the overlap of all the peptide bond absorption. Additionally, in many metalloproteins their prosthetic groups have intrinsic ligands or bind substrates/inhibitors that absorb intensively in the infrared. This chapter contains information on handwriting comparison and identification, the basis of identification of handwriting and hand printing, and natural variation in handwriting. The importance of proper exemplar writing for examination of handwriting is discussed, along with cautions concerning similarities between different persons΄ writing. Curtin University has developed a multimedia prototype system for use by speech therapists to assist in the rehabilitation of motor speech impaired patients. These are often stroke victims who have to relearn the ability to communicate effectively. The process is usually laborious and instead of the usual card-based prompts used by the therapist, this multimedia solution offers screen and audio prompts together with high quality digitised speech. The result is a reduced work load for the therapist. In parallel with this work, is a Mobility Aid Assistive Device Program for the visually impaired. The support clusters for all these groups, whether they be therapists, caregivers, manufacturers of hardware or software do not interact to the extent they might. In this paper, the link budget of Gbps wireless infrared indoor communication is analysed. We particularly focus on the receiver sensitivity and identify the most suitable wavelengths range. We show that an optical receiver operating at 1 Gbps will hardly achieve the shot noise limit, which is determined by the received amount of background light. Regarding the link budget, we present two case studies. One deals with (very) short range communication, the other one with a wireless personal area network. We reveal that a network demands for avalanche photodiodes as well as beam steering. This clearly causes major challenges regarding compact and inexpensive components. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The designers have started to use technological means in increasing fashion, with tools aimed for them readily available. In order to manage the task of designing and analysing a prototype, we focus on using video as a storage of data by embedding the information with active markers. Based on a small survey of methods, characteristics of active markers are developed and a test program written. A brief outline of existing sensing response systems based on metal oxide thin films utilizing conductometric, surface acoustic wave (SAW), and infrared gas sensing techniques is presented. Recent results on conductometric and SAW techniques demonstrate the advantages of these techniques in detecting gases, such as O3, H2 and NO2, at very low concentrations. Present detection limits are in the low ppb range and show the potential for the development of low cost, low temperature gas sensing systems. Infra-red (IR) gas sensing provides an attractive alternative for high-resolution, non-destructive, quantifiable and fast detection technique for important chemical species. In the last two decades, these detection techniques have earned significant attention by the research community in an effort to overcome the technological hurdles faced by conventional technologies. Human body images acquired at visible spectrum have inherent restrictions that hinder the performance of person recognition systems built using that kind of information (e.g. scene artefacts under varying illumination conditions). One promising approach for dealing with those limitations is using images acquired beyond the visible spectrum. This paper reviews some of the existing human body imaging technologies working beyond the visible spectrum (X-ray, Infrared, Millimeter and Submillimeter Wave imaging technologies). The Perceptive Workbench endeavors to create a spontaneous and unimpeded interface between the physical and virtual worlds. Its vision-based methods for interaction constitute an alternative to wired input devices and tethered tracking. Objects are recognized and tracked when placed on the display surface. By using multiple infrared light sources, the object΄s 3D shape can be captured and inserted into the virtual interface. This ability permits spontaneity since either preloaded objects or those objects selected at run-time by the user can become physical icons. Integrated into the same vision-based interface is the ability to identify 3D hand position, pointing direction, and sweeping arm gestures. Such gestures can enhance selection, manipulation, and navigation tasks. In previous publications, the Perceptive Workbench has demonstrated its utility for a variety of applications, including augmented reality gaming and terrain navigation.
