This article reviews publisher and vendor use of library advisory boards. While they are not new to the information industry, library advisory boards have assumed new importance, From the industry perspective, library advisory boards provide valuable market feedback concerning products and services. For librarians, membership on library advisory boards is an opportunity to learn about new products, provide feedback on existing products, and better understand the information marketplace. Recent literature is reviewed and a number of publishers and vendors are surveyed. The article profiles significant contributors to Texas. Blues singer and guitarist Melvin Jackson was born in Barry, Texas on August 16, 1915. Tenor saxophonist Illinois Jacquet was born in Louisiana and moved to Houston, where he started performing with notable musicians by the time he was a teenager. Trumpeter Russel Jacquet started playing the trumpet after they moved to Houston, Texas.

Chapter 16 of the book "Pediatric Rehabilitation: Principles and Practice," Fourth Edition, edited by Michael A. Alexander and Dennis J. Matthews is presented. It discusses the principles in analyzing human gait. It discusses the functional requirements of normal locomotion in humans. It tackles the importance of instrumented gait analysis (IGA).

Krylov subspace spectral (KSS) methods have been demonstrated to be effective tools for solving time-dependent variable-coefficient PDE. They employ techniques developed by Golub and Meurant for computing elements of functions of matrices to approximate each Fourier coefficient of the solution using a Gaussian quadrature rule that is tailored to that coefficient. In this paper, we apply this same approach to time-independent PDE of the form Lu = f, where L is an elliptic differential operator. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach for Poisson's equation and the Helmholtz equation in two dimensions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We extend the technique of optimal time step (OTS) selection for finite difference (FD) schemes of time dependent PDEs to PDEs where the leading-order spatial derivative term has a spatially varying coefficient. The basic approach involves identifying a transformation of the domain that eliminates the spatial dependence of the coefficient for the leading-order term. This change of variables is then used to define an optimal computational grid for the FD scheme on the original domain. By using both the optimal grid and OTS selection, we are able to boost the order of accuracy above what would be expected from a formal analysis of the FD scheme. We illustrate the utility of our method by applying it to variable-coefficient wave and diffusion equations. In addition, we demonstrate the viability of OTS selection for the two-step Kreiss-Petersson-Yström discretization of the wave equation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chapter 42 of the book "Medical Care of Cancer Patients" is presented. It discusses the neurologic toxicity of radiotherapy in cancer patients. It notes that cerebrovascular effects of radiation therapy occur frequently after treatment to the parasellar region and may result to moyamoya disease. It cites some symptoms when peripheral nerves are damaged by radiation such as pain, paresthesias, and weakness. It stresses that one of the most serious late complications of radiation therapy is the induction of a secondary malignancy.

Chapter 17 of the book "Nonconvulsive Status Epilepticus" is presented. The chapter focuses on nonconvulsive status epilepticus (NCSE) in children. The prevalence of absence status epilepticus, complex partial status epilepticus and autonomic status epilepticus in children are explored. Also included in the chapter is a discussion of the special syndromes of childhood status epilepticus with sleep-activated epileptiform activity, Landau-Kleffner syndrome (LKS) and continuous spike waves of slow sleep (CSWS).

Chapter 6 of the book "Biliary Tract and Gallbladder Cancer: Diagnosis and Therapy" is presented. This chapter discusses the pathologic staging system for gallbladder and biliary tract cancers. One of the most common staging system being used is the TNM system, in which the extent of tumor invasion, the lymph node status and the distance of metastasis are taken into consideration. The staging of gallbladder cancer, extrahepatic bile duct cancer and ampullary carcinoma are detailed.

Chapter 25 of the book "Clinical Pediatric Neurology," Third Edition, is presented. The chapter deals with the pathophysiology of coma and other states of altered awareness in children, as well as the diagnosis, outcome and prognosis of such conditions. Also explored in the chapter are the anatomic and physiologic basis of consciousness. Other conditions that cause altered awareness conditions but not coma are cited, such as vegetative state, minimally conscious state and akinetic mutism.

Chapter 85 of the book "Esophageal Cancer: Principles and Practice," edited by Blair A. Jobe, Charles R. Thomas, and John G. Hunter is presented. It presents a review of the use of photodynamic therapy (PDT) as an endoscopic palliation in treating malignant dysphagia. It points out that PDT should not be performed in patients suffering from poor kidney or liver function, acute porphyria, and leukopenia.

Chapter 72 of the book "Esophageal Cancer: Principles and Practice," edited by Blair A. Jobe, Charles R. Thomas, and John G. Hunter is presented. It discusses the significance of left transthoracic and thoracoabdominal (LTA) esophagectomy in treating patients with esophageal cancer. LTA is considered as the most common operative approach for the cancer. It also provides exposure of the upper abdomen and recognized as an ideal approach for resection.

Chapter 3 of the book "Clinical Adult Neurology," Third Edition, is presented. This chapter explores the electrodiagnosis of neuromuscular disorders using nerve conduction studies (NCS) and electromyography as a diagnostic tool. The separate principles of NCS and EMG are discussed, along with the use of EMG in validating a neurologic diagnosis. The role of NCS in the evaluation of myopathy is also explored.

Chapter 9 of the book "Medical Management of Adults With Neurologic Disabilities" is presented. The chapter deals with exercise in relation to adults with neurologic disabilities. It is said that such patients need to be encouraged by their clinicians to engage in a physical fitness conditioning program which allow them to slow down body deconditioning. Exercises prescribed for specific neurologic disabilities are discussed which include cardiorespiratory training for cerebral palsy and resistance training for spinal cord injury.

The article discusses the highlights of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Advanced Research Workshop held in Moscow, Russia from October 25-25, 2005. Participants examined nuclear security culture from a variety of angles. Among the issues discussed at the meetings were organizational culture, the relationship between security and safety at nuclear installations, and motives and incentives that promote security culture.

Inspiratory resistive load (IRL) has been used as part of clinical tools to evaluate respiratory responses of a child like depth of inspiratory efforts and perception of the inspiratory load. These responses have shown to be important to monitor the prognosis of asthma and sleep apnea. Minimally invasive instrumentations are generally preferred for children if extended monitoring is required. A parameter termed pulse transit time (PTT) has been suggested to be a surrogate marker of inspiratory efforts in respiratory sleep studies. In this study, 10 healthy children (8 male; aged 8.3 ± 2.6yr) were recruited to breath through a customized facemask with four different inspiratory load settings in their wakeful state. PTT technique was used to determine its potential in assessing a child's perception of an inspiratory load. The results show that relative air pressure variations within the facemask can relate to changes observed in PTT in a significant manner (p<0.05; R²=0.627). The breathing frequency during each test activities also indicated that there was a general lower trend when a higher valued IRL is introduced. Essentially, a relative lower mean PTT value was observed with a higher inspiratory load (p<0.05; R²=0.643). The findings herein can suggest that this simple measure can be a suitable candidature for inspiratory effort monitor in the pediatrics population especially when prolonged monitoring is required. Chapter 83 of the book "Advanced Therapy in Hypertension and Vascular Disease" is presented. It focuses on the role of acupuncture practice in treating factors associated with hypertension. It recounts several traditional manners of acupuncture such as auricular acupuncture which is commonly conducted with Korean hand therapy or other Japanese styles. It cites the obstacles in making a referral for acupuncture such as lack of licensed practitioners and financial costs. Given is a suggested schedule for a standard trial and initial course of acupuncture.

The Social Stage Model of Disasters is examined as a parallel to natural responses to terrorism. After a shared upheaval, people tend to go through an emergency phase when they talk about the event, followed by a drop in talking during a longer inhibition phase. Thoughts of the event still weigh heavily on people's minds until the adaptation phase when social and physiological patterns stabilize. New methodological and analytical tools have enabled the study of immediate reactions to natural disasters, collective trauma, and terrorist attacks. These include the Electronically-Activated Recorder (EAR), which captures how people congregate and talk to or avoid others. Also, Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC), a software program that analyzes psychological states through linguistic markers, has been applied to language samples from various internet forums for communication before, during, and after shared upheavals. A review of the research using these recent technological developments suggests that terrorism can have the unintended effects of encouraging affiliation, strengthening values, and reaffirming identities. The findings further suggest that distancing, a natural phase in the course of crises and challenges, may be helpful when faced with terrorism. This chapter discusses major legal actions that have developed concerning Oregon religious groups. The experience of new religions in Oregon, even if an extreme situation, seems to mirror what has happened around the U.S. concerning new and unpopular new religions. New and exotic religions have sometimes encountered severe difficulties in establishing themselves, and, if they do gain a foothold, they must exert great effort and resources to maintain their existence.

This chapter implies a popular model from deviance theory to new religious movements (NRM). While most researchers of NRM recruitment and participation stress the voluntary nature of decisions to participate, some other societal forces have attempted to define participation as a mental health problem requiring attention from the government and from mental health practitioners. The details of the ongoing battle to define NRM participation as a problem requiring intervention offers an important test of such theories.

This chapter focuses on regulation of minority religions in Japan and China. It details the markedly different responses to perceived challenges and conflicts involving newer religions in Japan and China. The animus toward the Unification Church in Japan is noteworthy particularly in its being tolerated by police and legal authorities in Japan. It is also ironic that the Chinese are using ideas from Western anti-cultism. In Japan, an ironic aspect of the Aum tragedy is that the initial hesitancy in dealing with complaints about Aum activities was partially related to the Westernized concept of religious freedom that had been forced on Japanese society after World War II.

This chapter focuses on social justice and minority religions in prison in England and Wales. The distribution of chaplains is uneven and unfair between churches and minority faith communities. Minority faiths and new religious movements share a common plight in the prisons and England and Wales. The statutory ascendancy of the Church of England, reinforced by the Church's ecumenical covenant with Roman Catholics and Methodists, places other faith groups at a disadvantage. Despite the official statement that members of non-Christian religions have the same right to practice their faith as Christians and they should be given the same opportunity to do so, whenever practicable in prison circumstances, the truth is that equal respect is not accorded to all religions.

This chapter discusses developments on the legal regulation of religions in Russia. It it is clear that the frequency of legal actions involving religious groups continues to increase, as they attempt to defend themselves, especially over reluctance of government officials to allow reregistration of such groups under the 1997 law. Other actions are also being brought by governmental officials of various kinds, from tax authorities to prosecutors bringing various criminal charges against unpopular religions. Thus it seems safe to say that there has been an increase in pervasiveness of the legal system, at least as it pertains to matters religious.

This chapter presents an analysis of brainwashing theories in European parliamentary and administrative reports on cults and sects. Why brainwashing notions have been so readily adopted in the European context needs further analysis. One could say this has occurred because of the tendency to accept the word of apostates when claims are made and accounts offered about what happened to them when they joined newer religions. Those claims and accounts are apparently more culturally coherent if use is made of concepts such as brainwashing and mind control.

In fact, agencies of the State at all levels are fully engaged in the fight against cults and mobilized to such a high degree that it is now necessary to think of France as the only Western country with an official mission to combat cultism.

This chapter focuses on the regulation of religion, particularly religious groups sometimes refer or more neutrally as New Religious Movements. Recent efforts at social control of controversial new religions in the U.S. began in the late 1960s and early 1970s, often involving issues of consumer protection. A consumer protection approach, while not particularly useful in the U.S., has been more successful in countries without formal constitutional protections for religious freedom or which have more paternalistic and protective approaches toward unconventional individual religious experiences.

Pros of computed tomography are shorter scanning times and detection of sinonasal disease while its cons are ionizing radiation exposure and lower resolution.

It discusses the significance of minimally invasive esophagectomy (MIE) in treating patients with esophageal cancer. It notes that MIE is not performed in medical centers since it is technically challenging. It concludes that its successful outcomes will widen its applicability to higher-risk patients.

The article discusses the highlights of the International Conference on Nuclear Security: Global Directions for the Future held in London, England from March 16-18, 2005. The Conference considered the threat of malicious acts involving nuclear and other radioactive materials and noted that nuclear terrorism is one of the greatest threats to society. Priorities for strengthening nuclear security were also discussed at the conference.

The article presents a questionnaire that represents the first iteration of a comprehensive evaluation methodology designed to help nuclear industry management gauge the existing security culture among the management and employees of nuclear facilities. Questions are designed to capture both the tangible aspects of security culture and the working environment, and intangibles such as behavior, attitudes, and the prevailing mentality among the workforce.
