This document contains annotations for 667 English-language publications published in Europe, excluding the British Isles, during 1986-88. Not included are personal visit reports and conference papers unless they were actually published, doctoral dissertations, masters theses, and materials available only on microfilm, microfiche, or computer disks. The bibliography is organized by country, with a section also on Europe and a section on Scandinavia. The section on Germany is subdivided into three categories (pre-1945 Germany, Federal Republic of Germany, and German Democratic Republic), and the section on the Soviet Union is subdivided into pre-1917 and after. Within the country categories, the bibliography is subdivided into categories of institutions, methods, techniques, and subject matter, although the categories are not clearly definable or mutually exclusive and not all categories can be applied equally to all countries covered. Each item is listed in full only as the main entry in the applicable major subcategory and cross-referenced by number under any other applicable subcategory. In addition to the annotations, three pages of names of periodicals searched and the 52 categories used are listed. This bibliography contains 682 listings covering English language materials on adult education in Europe published during 1980-82. Materials were chosen in accord with a broad definition of adult education that includes vocational education for adults; training in business and industry; adult secondary and postsecondary study; activities of museums, art galleries, and libraries; along with liberal adult education through university extension and evening classes or through voluntary associations. Materials selected are readily accessible. The bibliography is organized by country, with a section on Europe and a section on Scandinavia. Within each country's section, the bibliography is subdivided into categories of the various institutions, methods and techniques, and subject matter with each source listed fully as the main entry in the applicable major subcategory and cross-referenced by number under any other applicable subcategory. A subject index lists all entries by subcategories and by countries. A list of periodicals searched systematically for materials is included. A listing of English-language sources available on adult education in Europe presents 556 items covering a period of five years and supplements the bibliography Adult Education in Continental Europe: An Annotated Bibliography of English-language Materials 1945-1969. The bibliography is organized by country, with a section on Europe and a section on Scandinavia. Countries include: Albania, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Luxemburg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, USSR, and Yugoslavia. Materials were selected using the broadest possible concept of adult education as a basis. They are divided into 20 main categories, then further subdivided, so that both broad categories (e.g., history of adult education) and specific areas (e.g., night schools) are included. The listing for each country is sub-divided into categories of the various institutions, methods and technicians, and subject matter, with each source listed in full as the main entry in the major applicable sub-category and cross-referenced by number under any other applicable sub-category. This annotated bibliography lists 836 English language materials dealing with adult education in continental Europe that were written between 1975 and 1979. Organized by country, the bibliography deals with the broadest possible concept of adult education. Thus, it includes works devoted to vocational education for adults; adult secondary and postsecondary level credit courses; as well as activities of museums, art galleries, and libraries inasmuch as these involve specifically planned educational programs for individual adults or adult groups. Within the above categories, the bibliography is subdivided into categories of various institutions, methods and techniques, and subject matter. This bibliography, the fifth in a series covering monographs on comparative and area studies in adult education from 1945 to the present, covers the three-year period between 1983 and 1985. Annotations of 661 works dealing with Europe as a whole, Scandinavia, pre-1945 Germany, the Federal Republic of Germany, the German Democratic Republic, pre-1917 Russia, the USSR, and 22 other countries located on the continent of Europe. The annotations are arranged into sections by the area or country covered in them. Within the country sections, works are further subdivided by topic. Recent work in new archival sources reveals that Christian Kold did not merely implement Grundtvig's ideas about folk high schools in Denmark, but had his own philosophy. He disagreed with Grundtvig on several aspects, such as appropriate starting age and the religious basis of folk high schools. (SK)

This bibliography lists 1,721 reports and publications that examine adult education in at least two countries and were published between 1945 and 1995. The oldest publications date from 1949, and the final 44 documents listed constitute a partial list of the international comparative adult education publications published in 1996.
