This chapter serves to assess the quantity and impact of private agricultural research in developing countries, alongside the policies which affect that research. To provide context, an outline of the history, size and structure of private research presents data on research expenditures by region, by agency, by crop and by industrial sector. Evidence on research inputs reflects not only the importance of private research, but also the wide national and regional differences in both inputs and implementation of programs. Research output and intellectual property rights (IPR) protection are also strikingly different across time and space, as seen in data on agricultural IPRs by region, by industrial origin, and by crop type. The diffusion of agricultural innovations among farmers is described using data on approvals of genetically modified crops, and on cultivated areas actually planted. Studies of the subsequent impacts of agricultural research show that private sector research is making an important contribution to agricultural productivity growth in some countries and could make an even larger impact if government policies were more favorable. The conclusion provides a review of economic and policy determinants affecting private incentives, and some policy prescriptions to encourage further investment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Urban environments offer unique opportunities for researchers in the spatial sciences. Urban systems create their own microclimate, are the realization of intensive human activity and are strongly associated with high levels of human population (Steemers et al 1997). These aspects among others afford the opportunity for geospatial technologies to monitor and enhance humankind's relationship with the environment. However, far too often is this monitoring done by researchers or interested groups which are empowered to do so (Elwood 2006). Marginalized groups within urban settings rarely are offered the opportunity to participate in the development of a monitoring system, which could include geospatial technologies. Often these marginalized groups are not just lacking in the sense of policy decisions but their quality of health is often times inferior to more prominent groups within the city. This level of poor health is not defined and in order for it to be understood sufficiently, the level of spatial differentiation in health needs to be measured (Galea et al. 2005). The current paper applies media equation research to video game design. The paper presents a review of the existing media equation research, describes a specific study conducted by the authors, discusses how the findings of the study can be used to inform future game design, and explores how other media equation findings might be incorporated into game design. The specific study, discussed in detail in the paper, explores the notion of team formation between humans and computer team-mates. The results show that while highly experienced users will accept a computer as a team-mate, they tend to react more negatively towards the computer than to human teammates (a ‘Black Sheep’ Effect). In previous work, we have presented a novel global feasibility solver for the large system of quadratic constraints that arise as subproblems in the solving of hard hybrid problems, such as the scheduling of refineries. In this paper we present the Gradient Optimal Constraint Equation Subdivision (GOCES) algorithm, which incorporates a standard NLP solver and the global feasibility solver to find and establish global optimums for systems of quadratic equations, and present benchmarks.
