Abstract

In "Striving in Common," Jennifer Jellison Holme and Kara S. Finnigan seek to build a bridge between two largely disparate, yet interconnected, conversations--those among education reformers on the one hand, and urban reformers on the other. In this carefully considered volume, the authors show how the challenges faced by urban schools are linked to issues of regional equity and civic capacity. More Drawing on examples from a range of cities, including St. Louis, Milwaukee, Palo Alto, Rochester, Omaha, and Minneapolis, Holme and Finnigan trace the policy decisions that have fostered competition for scarce resources between cities and suburbs as well as patterns of segregation by race and income. They highlight the limited ability of technical education reforms and interdistrict desegregation programs to counter the resulting educational inequities. The authors then examine existing regional governance initiatives aimed at promoting equity and reducing inefficiency through city/suburban cooperation. Finally, Holme and Finnigan outline a framework for cross-sector, regional governance mechanisms that would incorporate tax-base sharing, targeted investments in high-poverty communities, and mobility policies to help students and families access better opportunities. The book concludes with a discussion of the political opportunities and challenges presented by such a strategy. At a time of increasing concern over inequality in education and society, "Striving in Common" sets forth an ambitious agenda for rethinking the parameters of education policy and connecting education reform to broader efforts at urban reform.

Abstract

This book includes a set of rigorous and accessible studies on the topic of "research evidence" from a variety of levels and educational vantage points. It also provides the reader with thoughtful commentaries from leading thinkers in the field. The complex process of acquiring, interpreting, and using research evidence makes for a rich and under examined area in educational research, practice and policymaking. Policy makers, practitioners and scholars are in need of additional knowledge and practical steps in terms of the uptake of evidence into practice. Abstract

Over the last decade, growing consumer awareness of the environment, and the stringent government regulations have forced manufacturers to consider Design for Environment (DFE) during product development. DFE is a systematic approach of incorporating environmental attributes into the design of a product by considering the potential environmental impact of a product throughout its life cycle. Although DFE assessment is generally carried out during the early design phase, it is also a useful exercise to assess the environmental impact of an existing product, and to provide the design suggestions. In this paper, a DFE assessment of a household appliance is presented with the aim to assess the environmental and economical impact of an existing design. Later, the result of the initial assessment is used to provide design suggestions for improving the existing design. The outcome of the study suggests that DFE assessment allows manufacturers to compare different design configurations in order to reduce the environmental and economical impact of a product. 34. Effect of foliar applied KNO3 on yield, quality and leaf nutrients of Carignane and Colombard wine grapes.

Abstract

KNO3 foliar applications given in different doses effected the yield, 100 berry weight, TSS, acidity, pH, TSS/acidity, N and K content of leaf blade and petiole in Carignane and Colombard wine grapes. Results showed that 1 and 2 % KNO3 applications increased the yield and hundred berry weight compared to control and had positive effect on TSS. Because of leaf blights caused by 3 % KNO3 application, certain problems appeared despite an increase in yield and some other parameters according to control. Foliar KNO3 applications caused to increase N and K contents of leaf blade and petiole. It was concluded that the doses of 1 and 2 % can be suggested for agricultural practise. Abstract

The goal of foliar fertilization with KNO3 is to obtain efficiency and dominancy of a determined quality criteria in grapes and respectively in wines. This study was carried out to determine the effect of foliar fertilization with different KNO3 doses (control, 1%, 2%, 3%) on quality of white (Colombard) and red (Carignane) wines. Considering the chemical and organoleptical results, it could be concluded that the effects of foliar fertilization with KNO3 on wine quality is significant in the range of 1 % KNO3 for Colombard and 2 % KNO3 for Carignane.
