This article reports that one of the most familiar wave guiding structures is the conventional transmission line such as the two-wire line and the coaxial line. The fundamental mode of propagation on a transmission line is essentially a transverse electromagnetic (TEM) wave, which owns neither electric nor magnetic field in the direction of propagation. An ideal lossless uniform TEM transmission line can be represented by a lumped-circuit and consists of series inductance L and shunt capacitance C, all defined per unit length of the line. A microstrip line is a type of open planar transmission line that consists of a dielectric substrate medium with a ground plane on the lower side and a conducting strip on the upper side.
