This chapter critically examines the hypothesis that the origins of some adult mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, which is the focus of this review, derive from adverse events in utero, such as maternal nutrition deficiency, infection and hypoxia. The hypothesis was originally derived from neuropathological changes in patients with established schizophrenia that are highly suggestive of impaired neural development occurring around mid-gestation. Increasingly it appears that gestational timing and the severity of the insult, rather than type of insult, plays a critical role in subsequent behavioural outcome. Supporting the neurodevelopmental hypothesis, recent studies have demonstrated that serious mental illnesses such as schizophrenia and afferent disorders are associated firstly with behavioural abnormalities that are present from early childhood, and secondly with ongoing neural injury on serial magnetic resonance imaging through late childhood and adolescence. These data suggest that alterations in brain development during fetal life lead to an evolving damage over the course of childhood before finally being overtly expressed in early adulthood. Current data suggest that the initial loss of cells in utero leads to a long-term remodelling of the brain that is mediated by upregulation of physiological apoptosis. That such adult illnesses present with early behavioural and physiological clues, are progressive and not static in nature, and that the process is potentially governed by common mechanisms regardless of cause, offers significant new opportunities for intervention and treatment. We study learning in a modified EXACT model, where the oracles are corrupt and only few of the presented attributes are relevant. Both modifications were already studied in the literature, and efficient solutions were found to most of their variants. Nonetheless, their reasonable combination is yet to be studied, and combining the existing solutions either fails or works with complexity that can be significantly improved. In this paper we prove equivalence of EXACT learning attribute-efficiently with and without corrupt oracles. For each of the possible scenarios we describe a generic scheme that enables learning in these cases using modifications of the standard learning algorithms. Moderate to severe hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy continues to be an important cause of acute neurologic injury at birth, occurring in approximately 1 to 2 cases per 1000 term live births (1). The possibility that hypothemia might be able to alleviate neonatal brain injury is a ‘dream revisited'. Early experimental studies, mainly in altricial species such as kittens, demonstrated that hypothermia greatly extended the ‘time to last gasp' and improved outcomes (2). These findings led to a series of small uncontrolled studies in the 1950s and 1960s where infants not breathing spontaneously at five minutes after birth were immersed in cold water until respiration resumed (3-7). Although outcomes were said to be better than for historical controls, this experimental approach was overtaken by two major developments: the introduction of active ventilation of infants exposed to asphyxia and the recognition that even mild hypothermia is associated with increased oxygen requirements and greater mortality in the premature newborn (8). This article focuses on the ways in which the Israeli kibbutz communities and the North American Hutterian Brethren colonies adapt to the pressures of the external society. Since both kibbutz and colony are intentional communities, ideology is unusually important to them. Their charters of social organization and action are based on a set of beliefs of what is right, proper and good. In both colonies, ideology and culture function to define and restrict the range of possible alternative responses to given situations.

Technical enforcement of intellectual property (IP) rights often conflicts with the ability to use the IP. This is especially true when the IP is data, which may easily be copied while it is being accessed. As electronic commerce of data becomes more widespread, traditional approaches will prove increasingly problematic. In this paper, we show that the mobile agent architecture is an ideal solution to this dilemma: by providing full access to the data but charging for the transmission of results back to the user — results-based billing — we resolve the access versus protection conflict. We define new requirements for agent frameworks to implement results-based billing: "data-aware accounting" and "data-tight sandboxing", which, along with the common requirements such as authentication, authorization, agent self-monitoring, and efficiency, provide the mechanisms by which database owners can effectively grant users access to their intellectual property.
