This paper describes and evaluates a summarization system that extracts the gene function textual descriptions (called GeneRIF) based on a MedLine record. Inputs for this task include both a locus (a gene in the LocusLink database), and a pointer to a MedLine record supporting the GeneRIF. In the suggested approach we merge two independent phrase extraction strategies. The first proposed strategy (LASt) uses argumentative, positional and structural features in order to suggest a GeneRIF. The second extraction scheme (LogReg) incorporates statistical properties to select the most appropriate sentence as the GeneRIF. Based on the TREC-2003 genomic collection, the basic extraction strategies are already competitive (52.78% for LASt and 52.28% for LogReg, respectively). When used in a combined approach, the extraction task clearly shows improvement, achieving a Dice score of over 55%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article describes the technologies used for the various runs submitted by the University of Geneva in the context of the 2004 ImageCLEF competition. As our expertise is mainly in the field of medical image retrieval, most of our effort was concentrated on the medical image retrieval task. Described are the runs that were submitted including technical details for each of the single runs and a short explication of the obtained results compared with the results of submissions from other groups. We describe the problems encountered with respect to optimising the system and with respect to finding a balance between weighting textual and visual features for retrieval. A better balance seems possible when using training data for optimisation and with relevance judgements being available for a control of the retrieval quality. The results show that relevance feedback is extremely important for optimal results. Query expansion with visual features only gives minimal changes in result quality. If textual features are added in the automatic query expansion, the results improve significantly. Visual and textual results combined deliver the best performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chapter 5 of the book "Globalization and Higher Education" is presented. It highlights the for-profit model of the continuing development of higher education. It also explores the influence of for-profit institutions on the evolving understanding of what constitutes a college education. It cites the lessons that traditional higher education institutions can learn from the growth of for-profit providers.
