Selbstachtung heißt, Verantwortung für sich selbst zu übernehmen. Doch obwohl sie elementar für ein gelingendes Leben und unsere moralische Praxis ist, sind wir nicht zur Selbstachtung verpflichtet. Gegenüber anderen Menschen haben wir Achtungspflichten aufgrund des Gebots, nicht zu schaden, aufgrund ihrer moralischen Rechte und eventuell auch aufgrund besonderer Nahbeziehungen, in denen wir zu ihnen stehen. Auch wenn wir uns selbst gegenüber keine derartigen Pflichten haben, ist insbesondere die Moral innerhalb von Nahbeziehungen wichtig für unser Verständnis von Selbstachtung. An ihnen lässt sich nachvollziehen, dass zu unserer moralischen Praxis auch die persönlichen Haltungen gehören, in denen wir einander begegnen. Selbstachtung ist eine selbstreflexive Haltung, die wir unter bestimmten Bedingungen einnehmen können. Sie einzuüben ist notwendig, um mitbestimmen zu können, wer man ist und sein will, und um sich um seiner selbst willen wertschätzen zu können. Self-respect means taking responsibility for oneself. It is a requisite for a good life and an elementary component of our moral practice. Although we are not obliged to respect ourselves in the same way as we are obliged to respect other people, it is necessary to practise a self-respecting attitude to have a say in who one is and wants to be, and to value oneself for its own sake.

Plebiscites, or referendums, are epitomes of direct democracy and the right of self-determination. While direct democracy has always been a key subject in the theory and practice of western liberal democracies, the issue of self-determination has been propelled to the fore by the hegemonistic moves of Russia. By providing a historical analysis of the post-World War One plebiscites, this book deals with enduring, painfully contemporary, and in in any case fundamental, concepts. The contributors to this edited volume approach the referendums comparatively. After grounding the analysis theoretically, the authors look at detailed aspects of individual cases, with the two plebiscites held in the Danish-German border region of Schleswig in the winter of 1920 as points of departure. They then extend the exploration through the inter-war period and address the effects of border delimitations on everyday life or gender roles in the context of ethnic mobilization. Finally, the book places the post-World War One plebiscites in a long-term perspective. The concluding essays assess, among others, the applicability of plebiscitary solutions to contemporary conflicts, taking into consideration issues of borders, religion, language, identity, and minority rights.

This book analyses recent developments concerning the application of the international legal doctrines of recognition and self-determination in relation to the Western Sahara Question. It investigates the emergent shift in favour of Morocco’s sovereignty claim to Western Sahara as apparent from the positions adopted by an increasing number of third States in the United Nations and the recent spate of third States establishing consulates in Western Sahara, with Morocco’s encouragement. It reflects on what the functioning of the doctrines of recognition and self-determination in this situation reveals about contemporary international law in practice more generally. The work will be of interest to scholars, researchers, and postgraduate students as well as practitioners of public international law who have a particular interest in decolonisation, self-determination disputes, and/or conflicts about natural resource entitlements. It will also appeal to readers with an interest in the work of International Organisations, including the United Nations, the European Union, and the African Union, and to specialists in international relations and regional politics.

Dorothea Mladenova hinterfragt diese Diskurse kritisch und zeigt, wie im Zuge der »aktiven Planung des eigenen Lebensendes« (shukatsu) neoliberale Prinzipien des »unternehmerischen Selbst« auf den Tod übertragen werden: Aus Selbstbestimmung wird gemeinwohlorientierte Selbstverantwortung.

This open access book brings conceptual clarity to the study and practice of self-determination, showing that it is, without doubt, one of the most important concepts of the international legal order. It argues that the accepted categorisation of internal and external self-determination is not helpful, and suggests a new typology. This new framework has four categories: the polity-based, secessionary, colonial, and remedial forms. Each will be distinguished by the grounds, or the legitimacy-claim, on which it is based. This not only ensures consistency, it moves the question out of the purely conceptual realm and addresses the practical concerns of those invoking self-determination. By presenting international lawyers with a typology that is both theoretically consistent and more practically useful, the author makes a significant contribution to our understanding of this keystone of international law. Summary: Nutrients is planning a Special Issue focusing on beverages and ingestive behavior. This Special Issue will focus on research related to all aspects of beverage consumption and post-ingestive consequences. There continues to be much controversy surrounding the influence of beverage choice on health outcomes. Research investigating the impact of beverage choice has on human health and post-ingestive consequences continue to grow. We know from the growing body of literature that beverage choice has a substantial impact on metabolism, food reinforcement and eating behaviors.

Summary: The health and wellbeing of people and the planet is currently receiving a much attention, if only because of the ongoing global crisis instigated by COVID-19. The benefits of nature for human wellbeing have been scientifically studied in multiple disciplines for over three decades. Researchers from disciplines such as ecology, sport science, psychology, tourism, medicine, forestry, environmental studies and architecture have found evidence that being in nature, interacting with nature, and feeling connected to nature are important for good health and wellbeing. In particular, physical activity in nature has been linked to wellbeing. This manuscript explores a particular type of physical activity in nature: adventure and outdoor activity. Adventure in nature is important for wellbeing, and carefully designed interventions and programs can have a profound impact. The work in this book suggests that adventure should be considered an important part of the public health offering.

Die Idee des modernen Verfassungsstaats beruht auf dem Akt der freiheitlichen Selbstbestimmung aller Bürger*innen. Insofern bildet er die ethische Institution schlechthin. Denn wo das Volk die Parameter der Freiheit bestimmt, da gilt es, das Wesen der Freiheit selbst zu begreifen. Bleibt dieses Begreifen aus, wird der Gründungsakt zur gewesenen Freiheit und die Verwaltung des Staats zur Expert*innensache. Doch wo bleibt da die kreative Freiheit? Diese Frage macht eine Kritik der ethischen Institution notwendig. Dabei zeigt Thies Münchow in Anschluss an Kant und Hegel den integralen Zusammenhang von Ethik und Politik auf und nimmt zuletzt eine Neubestimmung der politischen Theologie vor.

Die Konstellationen rund um Reproduktion sind hoch dynamisch und stets erklärungsbedürftig. Das zeigen die Debatten und Konflikte um Entscheidungsprozesse im Kontext von Schwangerschaft und Geburt, die Kritik am Status quo von Versorgungsinfrastrukturen sowie die Aushandlungen von Sorgearbeit. Independent knowledge acquisition and learning organisation are key qualifications of the information society. The Mixed Methods study examines inter-individual differences among pupils in dealing with self-organised learning at secondary school level. Four types of learners are identified, which are characterised in more detail by a content-analysis of interviews and two case studies. Es werden vier Lernertypen identifiziert, die durch eine inhaltsanalytische Auswertung von Interviews und zwei Fallbeispiele genauer charakterisiert werden. Aus den Ergebnissen werden Empfehlungen für die Gestaltung selbst organisierter Lerneinheiten abgeleitet.
