35. Negative Refraction and Imaging with Quasicrystals.

Abstract

Recently, negative refraction of electromagnetic waves in photonic crystals was demonstrated experimentally and subwavelength images were observed. However, these investigations all focused on the periodic structure. In fact, the negative refraction exists not only in periodic structure, but also in nonperiodic structures such as quasicrystalline arrangement of dielectric. Here, we discuss the negative refraction and imaging based on some transparent quasicrystalline photonic structures. The high-symmetric photonic quasicrystals (PQCs) can exhibit an effective refractive index close to -1 in a certain frequency window. The index shows small spatial dispersion, consistent with the nearly homogeneous geometry of the quasicrystal. Thus, a flat lens based on the 2D PQCs can form a non-near-field image whose position varies with the thickness of the sample and the source distance. At the same time, the focus and image for both polarized waves at the same structure and parameters can also be realized by such a flat lens. 36. Role of 3T High Field BOLD fMRI in Brain Cortical Mapping for Glioma Involving Eloquent Areas.

Abstract

The study included 26 patients with glioma involving motor cortical areas to assess the value of preoperative blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in 3T high magnetic field for brain cortical mapping operation. With the guidance of preoperative mapping, all patients received microsurgery under awake anaesthesia to identify motor area by direct electrical stimulation. The tumor was resected at maximum with preservation of eloquent areas. Preoperative mapping was succeeded in twenty-three patients; Primary motor cortex, premoter area, supplementary motor area and cerebellar motor related area were localized. There was good correlation between preoperative fMRI and intraoperative cortical stimulation results. BOLD-fMRI in 3T high magnetic field could non-invasively localize the brain motor cortex and show its relationship to lesion before operation, which may help neurosurgeons to optimize the surgical planning, guide the intraoperative motor areas mapping and resect the tumor with brain eloquent areas preservation. Ting-Yi Chang et al.(2005) have proposed an efficient (t, n) threshold verifiable multi-secret sharing (VMSS) scheme, which is more secure than the one adopted in Lin and Wu (1999) and it can provide more efficient performance than the other VMSS schemes in terms of computational complexity. 38. Towards lifetime maintenance of case base indexes for continual case based reasoning.

Abstract

One of the key areas of case based reasoning is how to maintain the domain knowledge in the face of a changing environment. During case retrieval, a key process of CBR, feature-value pairs attached to the cases are used to rank the cases for the user. Different feature-value pairs may have different importance measures in this process, often represented by feature weights attached to the cases. How to maintain the weights so that they are up to date and current is one of the key factors determining the success of CBR. Our focus in this paper is on the lifetime maintenance of the feature-weights in a case base. Our task is to design a CBR maintenance system that not only learns a user's preference in the selection of cases but also tracks the user's evolving preferences in the cases. Our approach is to maintain feature weighting in a dynamic context through an integration with a learning system inspired by a back-propagation neural network. In this paper we explain the new system architecture and reasoning algorithms, contrasting our approach with the previous ones.
