Politik und ihre Vermittlung erfolgen vermehrt über mediale, insbesondere bildliche Kommunikation. Politische Bilder erzählen und deuten (retrospektive) Geschichte(n) und beeinflussen Verhalten und Denkweisen, indem sie Machtverhältnisse und Gesellschaftsstrukturen erzeugen, spiegeln, legitimieren und verfestigen. Ein Verständnis für politische Vorgänge muss daher auch über ein Bilderverständnis erfolgen. Die Beiträger*innen präsentieren interdisziplinäre Ansätze an der Schnittstelle von Visueller Kultur, Kunstgeschichte, Soziologie, Politikwissenschaft und Visueller Politik. Der Sammelband stellt somit einen Werkzeugkasten für bildanalytischen Methoden bereit, wobei der Unmittelbarkeit des visuellen Materials ein Nacheinander des Lesens gegenübergestellt wird.

Memes dienen nicht nur der popkulturellen Unterhaltung oder der Kunst, sie werden auch in der Politik, in lokalen und internationalen Wahlkämpfen oder auf Demonstrationen verwendet. In ihrer typischsten Form sind sie Text-Bild-Gefüge, die sich digital mit viraler Geschwindigkeit verbreiten und transformieren. Joanna Nowotny und Julian Reidy nehmen sich dieses Internetphänomens aus kulturwissenschaftlicher Perspektive an. Sie betreten Neuland, indem sie einzelne Memes kasuistisch analysieren und ihre Erkenntnisse systematisieren, um diese digitale Kommunikationsform definitorisch neu zu bestimmen - in stetem Bezug zu anderen digitalen Phänomenen wie dem trolling.

Von Feeds und Beschleunigung über Buffering bis zur Archivierung fragen die Beiträger*innen insbesondere nach der zeitlichen Dimension Sozialer Medien. Sie analysieren prägende Schreibweisen der Gegenwart aus literatur- und kulturwissenschaftlicher Perspektive. Dabei kommen auch Verleger*innen und Schriftsteller*innen zu Wort.

Why is social media in southeast Italy so predictable when it is used by such a range of different people? This book describes the impact of social media on the population of a town in the southern region of Puglia, Italy. Razvan Nicolescu spent 15 months living among the town’s residents, exploring what it means to be an individual on social media. Why do people from this region conform on platforms that are designed for personal expression?

Based on 15 months of ethnographic research in the city of Alto Hospicio in northern Chile, this book describes how the residents use social media, and the consequences of this use in their daily lives. Nell Haynes argues that social media is a place where Alto Hospicio’s residents – or Hospiceños – express their feelings of marginalisation that result from living in city far from the national capital, and with a notoriously low quality of life compared to other urban areas in Chile. In actively distancing themselves from residents in cities such as Santiago, Hospiceños identify as marginalised citizens, and express a new kind of social norm. Yet Haynes finds that by contrasting their own lived experiences with those of people in metropolitan areas, Hospiceños are strengthening their own sense of community and the sense of normativity that shapes their daily lives. This exciting conclusion is illustrated by the range of social media posts about personal relationships, politics and national citizenship, particularly on Facebook.

In today’s digital age, online and mobile advertising are of growing importance, with advertising no longer bound to the traditional media industry. Although the advertising industry still has broader access to the different measures and channels, users and consumers today have more possibilities to publish, get informed or communicate – to “co-create” –, and to reach a bigger audience. There is a good chance thus that users and consumers are better informed about the objectives and persuasive tricks of the advertising industry than ever before. At the same time, advertisers can inform about products and services without the limitations of time and place faced by traditional mass media. But will there really be a time when advertisers and consumers have equal power, or does tracking users online and offline lead to a situation where advertisers have more information about the consumers than ever before? The volume discusses these questions and related issues.
