Using Internet search data may reveal intentions and expectations in various areas of scientific interest in social sciences. One of them is media studies and especially the research of media literacy, where search engines such as Google can shape the way of investigation of current social trends and academic discourse in the field. In this paper, we analyse various ways of using specific data gathered by Google and delivered by the Google Trends service. We examine whether the online activity measured by Google searches can be a valid source of information to investigate how social trends correlate with current media literacy topics and areas of scientific interest. This paper provides some examples of how researchers could use Google Trends service to study specific search terms such as 'fake news', 'hoaxes' and other emerging collocations with which media literacy research is concerned. We conducted time series on Google search data to investigate the continuity of these terms with current geopolitical events, as well as significant social and political events, such as the election of the US president. In this paper, we employ a comparative study of the orthogonal collocation variational iteration method (OCVIM) and variational iteration method (VIM) for the solution of the one dimensional nonlinear Burger's equations through the use of certain orthogonal polynomials (Legendre and first kind Chebyshev polynomials of order one). The legendre's polynomial as a trial functions are more preferable than the Chebyshev polynomial as applicable to the one dimensional nonlinear Burger's equations. Here, the proposed methods were implemented vial a trial function for the initial approximate estimation through the orthogonal collocation approach. The complete solution sets (approximate solution) are thus obtained using the variational iteration method (VIM) in the approximation of the analytic solutions for the proposed problems. Numerical experimentations were carried out for the accuracy, reliability and convergence of the method for the proposed problems. Interesting results have been obtained with the aid of MAPLE 18 via the laid down algorithms which clearly show that the OCVIM is a superior numerical solver than the traditional variational iteration method (VIM). The results also show that the orthogonal collocation variational iteration method is an accurate and reliable solver for the proposed problems with excellent rate of convergence as compared with those available in literature. Quantitative methods applied to corpus data allow researchers to evaluate the represented results. Statistical association measures are used to evaluate the collocation strength and to produce lists of most plausible collocations. Such information about words' collocability supplied with statistical data can be used in many areas of computational and applied linguistics. The paper deals with the description of an integrated Russian collocations database that will contain automatically extracted collocations evaluated against dictionaries and linguistic expertise. Despite the fact there are collocations dictionaries for Russian there is still a need in a comprehensive collocation description. The aim of the tool is to provide information about collocational preferences of frequent lexemes supplied with additional information and examples from general and specialized corpora and other resources. This paper is an investigation of the impact of threshold values in geometric representations of lexical plots. The study uses MI-scores to test lexical representations in the Household Building Corpus (KPMR) data. MI-scores are a form of collocation of the assessment of lexical co-occurrence with values of > 3.0. However, changes in threshold values can provide an additional representative value to the nodes involved. The findings show that the threshold effect can contribute to lexical presence such as hapaxes as lexical density. Rational lexical expressions can be evaluated and viewed through the impact of its lexical wealth, in addition to examining the capabilities of #LancsBox 4.5 as a machine learning processer. Collocation extraction is a prominent task in natural language processing, its results are important in various areas of applied linguistics. The research focuses on a comparison between seven statistical measures based on the large Russian ruTenTen corpus. The paper examines the bigrams with a number of Russian high-frequency nouns that were extracted by the given measures. The analysis is organized in two ways. First, we ranked the lists of bigrams obtained by each measure and evaluated the results against the Russian dictionaries identifying automatically extracted and manually collected collocations. The second experiment involved the comparison between each pair of measures in order to determine to what extent they produce the same results. The results show that dictionary collocations have higher rankings in the lists. Also the produced bigrams can be considered as collocations by experts and thus may enrich dictionaries. The awareness of the importance of lexical collocations for vocabulary learning has increased over the last two decades. It is no longer enough to acquire the meaning of the word, but also its collocational span. Researches have shown that collocations usually represent a problem for non-native speakers because of the interference from their mother tongue. Therefore, emphasis needs to be put on developing collocational competence. The aim of this paper is to investigate the level of collocational competence of non-native users of Business English. First-year students at the University of Split, Faculty of Economics were given a gap fill exercise to assess their collocational competence. The study was modelled to use content-based instruction to enhance high school students' collocation competence in Thailand. Sixty grade eleven students studying in one of the most prestigious schools in Thailand volunteered to participate in the study. The students received content-based instruction. The class tools were online reading materials full of target collocations. The collocation competence test was conducted before and after the six-week instruction. The semi-structured interview was conducted to review the students' satisfaction with the content-based instruction. The data collected from the tests were analyzed using a T-test to determine whether there was any difference between the students' pre-test and the post-test scores. Content analysis was deployed to analyze the qualitative data. The findings indicated that the scores of the students on the pretest were significantly higher than on the posttest. Moreover, it showed that the students had high satisfaction with the content-based instructions. The study's findings yielded an alternate pedagogy to teach collocations and related lexical items. Using online reading materials played essential roles in fostering the students' engagements and allowing students to expose the contextual and natural collocation usages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article is aimed on the research of individual style of Vladimir Nabokov writing through the analysis of colour collocations with component “grey” functioning in the novel Lolita and in the author’s translation of it into Russian. The problem is reviewed by the researchers from the positions of Combinatorial Linguistics and Semantics of Colour. The methodological base of the study is “Harmonious Translation space” conception developed by Prof. L.V. Kushnina (Russia, Perm). As for the result we can assume that in Lolita and its translation Nabokov used different collocations to define colour. Analyzing them we can better understand his individual style and what was the most important to him as the author and translator. For example, in Russian translation the colour pallette is much wider and there are allusions that only language speaker can understand. Nabokov didn't translate one word the same way throughout the book. He also could explain some things which he thought didn't exist in the reader's worldview. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study is focused on the process of searching bilingual terminology on the Web in the translation process. The experimental data were gathered using computer monitoring (keylogging) and post-translation interviewing. A group of translators was given a short text containing educational terminology with multiple equivalents in the target language. The task was to translate the text with a focus on terminology equivalence and consistency. The computer monitoring data include keyboard activity, a list of Web resources consulted, screenshots, and video recordings of the screen. Logging data were presented as step-by-step sequences of actions in the course of searching for particular equivalents. During the post-translation interviewing, the testees gave comments on taking particular steps in terminology searching, periods of zero activity, and decision making. The results show that in searching for terminology translators perform several key types of activities: searching for potential equivalents, searching for definitions or explanatory contexts (both source and target terminology), verifying potential equivalents, and searching particular collocations with target terminology. A particular sequence rarely includes all types of activities and may represent an iterative process of performing similar activities. Recent research shows that bi-lingual competence is among the necessary skills that a translator needs in order to translate (PACTE, 2003). Apart from the mother tongue, a translator must have a command of other working languages. C language is what a translator employes to translate from a language into his/her mother tongue. For an effective acquisition of C language, knowing many words means a lot but is not enough. Language users must also acquire the potential meanings of word-combinations in the target language. Thus, learning and teaching collocations has gained a vital importance in the last decades for both translators, language learners and other language users who need to have approximate native-like foreign or second language competence and to achieve better fluency. The advances in the computer technology has also led to new insights in the field of collocation studies. The purpose of this study is to develop an online multimedia supported environment concerning collocations in English. Action research was conducted as a method. In the first three months, two language experts worked on 25 sets of collocations, which consisted of 20 collocations in C language and other multimedia stuff that go with them. On the other hand, the instructional technologist designed and developed an environment (OMLEC) based on the current literature and an insight from the language experts. OMLEC offers learners an opportunity to study about 500 collocations through some diagnostic, progressive and summative tests. OMLEC generates unique tests from collocations simultaneously.
