A walk down many uptown, midtown, and downtown streets in Manhattanwill bring one in contact with the neon glow of the storefrontpsychic's sign. How does the contemporary city dweller encounter theseshops and their signs and how do these shops persist in the changingurban terrain? Taking these questions as its starting point, thisvisual presentation is part sociological exploration and parttheoretical meditation on how we come to understand the role ofchance, fortune, and risk in our daily environment. Using three modesof analysisâmapmaking with statistical software, walking the streetwith a notebook, and photographing the shopsâI create original maps ofthe distribution of storefront psychics in the city. In addition, asthese maps become walking guides to the city, I enter shops to receivevarious readings, the results of which are incorporated into theproduction of a new, slightly more mythological and sociological map. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
