Digital transformation is a concept that is currently being discussed and emphasized in many policies, industrial and corporate strategies. In the scientific literature, digital transformation is often discussed as one of the pillars of a sustainable economy. On the other hand, the question is how to ensure that the digital transformation process itself is sustainable in the long term. That is, not only the transformation process itself but also the application of digital technologies in companies afterwards. This paper aims to explore the sustainability of digital transformation by analyzing its environmental, economic, and social impact. Through a literature review, this paper identifies several key factors that contribute to the sustainability of digital transformation, including the term energy transformation and education and digital skills, security, and business continuity. Based on the conducted research a model of sustainable digital transformation was proposed. The model presents the key elements for the sustainability of digital transformation. The article presents the current situation of the largest mining regions in the European Union, which is the Silesia region in Poland. The current legal conditions regarding the adopted ambitious climate goals in the 2030 and 2050 horizon and the resulting obligations of the Member States to reduce greenhouse gas emissions will result in significant changes in the economic profile, in particular in the Silesia region. The energy transformation is a very complex and long-term process, which includes both technological changes in heavy industry, which in turn affects the process of stimulating and developing infrastructure in the mining area. These changes, in turn, lead to the creation of new markets that respond to current demand in line with new social preferences. All these factors can significantly affect the labor market and local communities, therefore the transformation process should protect both the interests of employees leaving mining enterprises and at the same time guarantee a transparent distribution of costs and benefits. These conditions can be met by involving all parties in the dialogue on the future of the mining industry in Poland and alternative directions of economic development. In the study, to assess the dynamics of changes taking place in the Silesia region, a statistical analysis was used based on the relationship of two variables illustrating the key parameters of the economic development of the region, i.e. the dynamics of GDP and the dynamics of employment in the age of 15-74. The analysis was performed in the period covering the years 2016-2020. The research results classify the analyzed regions and macro regions in Poland according to the four types of regions identified in the transformation dynamics matrix. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Societal transformations like the German Energiewende rely not only on technical innovations and political measures but also on the economic support of the public. It is important to take into account how distributional issues have to be considered for acceptance of the political goals according the Energiewende and which economic instruments in order to internalise the external effects of energy consumption are most efficient. To generate empirical data for analysing economic decisions, we developed an app, which emphasises on game principles to generate an immersive setting and to translate abstract decisions into a visible outcome related to the idea of good life. Moreover, our app utilises the design of simulation games while recording user data. Implementing our own game analytics routines, we are able to track the decisions of the users for empirical research on user behaviour. Starting the app three players have to adopt the role of city mayors. They are guided through three stages. In the lobby they have to choose their city arms, which are related to specific types of electricity generation. We provide a set of energy related symbols giving the following urban development an individual and visual outcome. In the main part of the app the player has to invest a given amount in her city, while the two other mayors do the same. The players do not see the decisions of the others, while the actual values of the investment is depend on one another. During ten rounds the look of the city district of each player is changed according to the chosen city arm and in line with the individual outcome of the investments of all mayors. With the underlying asset database, the city will grow and show moments of life. Every player creates her own city. By means of different game setups, we investigate whether and to what extent the mayors' investments deviate from the Nash equilibrium prediction. The implementation of the german energy transition (Energiewende) is unclear in its configuration and timeframe. The future of the transition depends on more than factors such as technological development, economic feasibility and political framing. Rather, maintaining a positive attitude by society and its understanding is significant. Therefore, effectively communicating the complex process of energy transition is essential. For preserving the variety of aspects and the multitude of perspectives in this open process we choose the format of a serious game. We explain why we think developing serious games can be an appropriate tool for that purpose. Contrary to existing games on that topic, we focused on motives, attitudes and their implications in a world full of contradictions and caprices in everyday life. We created an innovative Adventure, which focusses on the energy transition. This topic represents a challenge because it bears complex interrelations (technical, political, social) and strong polarization in debate. In order to achieve a compelling game experience as well as a learning outcome, we use a set of characters to represent different attitudes. While dealing with job-related and day-to-day tasks, the characters run into the dilemma of foiling their commitment to sustainability. In the quest of a balance between consumption and happiness, they have to make energy-aware decisions and cooperate with each other. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
