Abstract

The European 1 MW, 170 GHz CW industrial prototype gyrotron for ECRH&CD on ITER was under test at the KIT test facility during 2016. In order to optimize the gyrotron operation, the tube was thoroughly tested in the short-pulse regime, with pulse lengths below 10 ms, for a wide range of operational parameters. The operation was extended to longer pulses with a duration of up to 180 s. In this work we present in detail the achievements and the challenges that were faced during the long-pulse experimental campaign. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Self-compression and self-focusing instabilities of femtosecond, multiterawatt laser pulses propagating at subrelativistic intensities in strongly undercritical plasmas are studied. Our numerical simulations show that the spatiotemporal self-compression works effectively in underdense (1% of the critical density) plasmas and relativistically intense, few-cycle laser pulses can be produced in this way over propagation distances less than 2 mm. We found that pulses with Gaussian radial and time profiles are very robust maintaining their initial shape and proportions during this process, while, in general, the interplay between the self-compression and the self-focusing has proved to be very sensitive to the shape of laser pulses. © 2006 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The dynamics of ultrashort, high-power laser pulses in underdense plasmas differs dramatically from that of long laser beams. We present the results of numerical studies of this dynamics within a model, which systematically incorporates finite pulse length (i.e., dispersion) effects along with diffraction and nonlinear refraction in a strongly nonlinear relativistic regime. New spatio-temporal patterns of self-compression and self-focusing typical of ultrashort high-intensity laser pulses are analyzed. The parameters of our numerical simulations correspond to a new class of high-peak-power (>=100 TW), ultrashort-pulsed laser systems, producing pulses with a duration in the 10–20 femtosecond range. © 2002 American Institute of Physics. Abstract

The review of the results obtained recently in the theory and in the computer simulations with 2D and 3D PIC codes of the interaction of high-intensity, ultra-short laser pulses with plasmas is presented. The laser interaction with underdense plasmas and its application to the problem of charged particle acceleration, of laser frequency upshifting, of relativistic self focusing, and of the generation of a quasistatic magnetic field is discussed. We present the results of the analytical description and of the PIC simulations of nonlinear coherent structures such as relativistic solitons and vortices and the production of high harmonics. © 2002 American Institute of Physics. Abstract

The set of the relativistic hydrodynamic equations for a hot two-species plasma are derived and then reduced in order to study the existence of one-dimensional soliton-like distributions of the electromagnetic energy in an electron-positron plasma. The investigation shows that (i) non-drifting bright solitons can exist in a hot electron-positron plasma, within a well defined range of plasma temperature; (ii) extremely high electromagnetic energy concentrations are possible in an ultrarelativistic plasma; (iii) the consistent plasma temperature develops strong spatial nonuniformities. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.
