Abstract

Despite the developing approach within criminology to think globally, there is a tendency for students to focus on issues specific to their own jurisdiction. This paper outlines an international electronic communication exchange in which US and British students analyze and interpret crime policies and contemporary issues in criminal justice. The International E-communication Exchange (IEE) is now in its fourth year. In 2007, over 500 students from six universities in the US and Britain participated. Students use a reflexive approach to develop awareness of how their own political and cultural values affect their views. Research interests and contemporary issues inform the selection of topics which have included racial/ethnic discrimination, gun control, risk of victimization, victim rights, explanations for violent behavior, the media, sex offenders/ offenses and the death penalty. As a result, students gain critical awareness of the value of different cultures, policies, and politics. An evaluation indicates that across topics, there were both similar and divergent opinions and policies. Students engaged in critical thinking, considered their own stance, and made international comparisons. Students were very positive about the experience and indicated that the project was the most difficult as well as the most rewarding experience of their university career. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
