We present a dedicated beamline branch for high flux and ultra-high resolution (R>100000) gas and vapor phase studies in the vacuum-ultra-violet (VUV) region of light on the undulator beamline I3, located on the 700 MeV MAX-III storage ring. We have measured the angular distributions of the resonant Auger and the second-step Auger electrons ejected in the processes Ar[sup *](2p[sup 5]3s[sup 2]3p[sup 6]([sup 2]P[sub j0])4s, J[sub 0]=1)→Ar[sup *+](2p[sup 6]3s3p[sup 5]([sup 1]P[sub 1])4s[sup 2]P[sub 1/2,3/2])+e[sub 1][sup -] and Ar[sup *+](2p[sup 6]3s3p[sup 5]([sup 1]P[sub 1])4s[sup 2]P[sub 1/2,3/2])→Ar[sup ++](2p[sup 6]3s[sup 2]3p[sup 43]P[sub 0,1,2])+e[sub 2][sup -], respectively, and the angular correlations between these two electrons. Based on these results, we discuss a key role of the lifetime interference effect in the angular distribution of the second-step Auger electrons and the extraction of the Auger amplitudes from the experimental data.
