We present the results of deep long-slit spectrophotometric observations of several bipolar planetary nebulae, selected because they show anomalously large [NII]/Hα ratios. The spatially resolved study of these spectra, obtained with the Palomar 5m double spectrograph and the Intermediate Dispersion Spectrograph at the 2.5m INT (La Palma), include the analysis of various diagnostic lines which allow us to test whether the presence of shocks, the bipolar geometry and/or the existence of abundance gradients might account for the observed emission line ratios. © 2005 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
