The river is the first location for the growth and development of urban settlements in Indonesia. Kampung Pahandut is an early village located in the Kahayan River area which has now developed into Palangka Raya City. One of expansion of Kampung Pahandut is Kampung Pahandut Seberang. Kampung Pahandut Seberang was a place for farming and a forest area, but it developed into a settlement for immigrants in Palangka Raya City. The settlements in Kampung Pahandut Seberang are divided into two, namely the house on the ground, the house on the water divided into two houses on stilts and a lanting house. A house on land is a house located on the ground, while a house on water is a house on stilts as an initial house that functions as a residence and a floating house, which is a development house after the house on stilts is located on the water. Floating house serves as a place for bathing, boat parking, fish cages, and a place to trade. This study aims to analyze the typomorphology of settlements in Kampung Pahandut Seberang in the Kahayan River area. The method used is a qualitative method based on data in the field with guidance from community leaders as key experts. The analysis is used to identify physical and non-physical types as factors pattern the settlement environment in the riverside area. The research output is to identify the types of settlements and the pattern of settlement development, and the elements pattern the settlement environment in the Kahayan riverside area and the adaptation of the people who live in the Kahayan Riverside area. Rural settings offer numerous opportunities for development, and the use of thematic maps can be an effective tool for identifying and addressing strategic issues in these areas. This study used a one-year action research methodology to examine the use of a rural thematic map in the rural site of Baturetno, in Malang Regency. The result of this study is a rural thematic map that is easy to understand and includes several strategic actions. The development of the map of Baturetno's potentials were based on the curated issue and community self-implementation by combining digital tools and firsthand observation. The rural issues were assessed using the SWOT framework and developed through informal and formal participation on the ground. The issues are then classified as macro, mezzo, and micro to construct the proposed rural thematic map. This map can serve as a useful resource for policymakers, community leaders, and other stakeholders working to promote development in rural areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines how discursive power shapes LGBTQ+ community health information practices. Informed by analysis of 10 information world maps drawn by SC LGBTQ+ community leaders, our findings indicate that while community can be a valuable construct to reject mainstream discourses of regulation and correction, it inevitably is fraught and not representative of all LGBTQ+ individuals. Findings can inform strategies for community leaders to facilitate more equitable information flow among members by identifying key structural elements impeding this flow at the community level. The phenomenon known as the "down low" among African American Men who have Sex with Men (AAMSM) has caused much concern among black community leaders, HIV/AIDS researchers, and the general population, but little research has been conducted on this phenomenon from the perspective of AAMSM. The present study sets out to address this gap in the literature and demonstrates how the "down low" phenomenon affects these men's personal identity negotiation and stigma management strategies. Using a modified version of grounded theory, twelve AAMSM were interviewed about their views on the "down low" and about their sexual and racial identities. The study shows how these AAMSM reduce potential stigma by disassociating their own same-sex sexual activities from those of their stereotyped images of men "on the down low" and by providing contextual justifications for their own behaviors. The evidence presented here moves away from previous theories which emphasized individual choice in "down low" identification and instead highlights socio-structural factors that limit these men's perceived chance to disclose their sexual identities in specific situational contexts. It states that community based orders enforced in Murri Court are focused toward the end result of offender rehabilitation under the administration of indigenous community leaders. It is time for a healing journey in public policy-making for the United States. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a way for faith leaders to become more fully engaged in the pubic policy process by assuming functional accountability as change agents through reconciliatory advocacy. In this paper, I examine the dynamics of a movement without visible, national-level leaders. By examining who young women and men view as articulating feminism in the 21st century, two themes emerge. First, most activists have difficulty identifying leaders visible beyond their own communities, and second, when asked to identify those who are articulating contemporary feminism many identify music icons who have a presence on a national level. Drawing on these findings, I conclude that what is occurring is a form of "emotional mobilization" that empowers young women and men but does not develop a form a leadership that provides strategic guidance for the movement. This I argue results in an empowered but not collectively mobilized movement that is often not visible on a large-scale or national level and therefore does not have a presence on the larger political scene. Although there is a broad recognition that styles and context of leadership are important factors in affecting the emergence, development, and ultimate impact of a social movement, the literature on leadership is underdeveloped (but see Morris and Staggenborg 2004; Robnett 1996). In this paper, we mean to contribute to an emerging literature by outlining an ideal type of a distinct model of leadership within movements, that of a platform leader who builds an organization with the primary purpose of supporting and amplifying her voice. The platform leader speaks on behalf of a position or a constituency, but beyond this, the actual relationship to that position or constituency is unclear.In this paper, we first discuss the ways scholars have dealt with the conflicting demands placed on leadership, including distinguishing between types of relationships leaders have with their followers, distinguishing between the kinds of audiences with whom leaders must communicate, and distinguishing between the types of activities in which leaders must be competent. We also discuss the broader trend in American associational life: the reduction of rank-and-file member participation within their organization combined with the rising importance of professional leaders. Next, we present two case studies of platform leadership within opposing organizations, comparing the development and maintenance of platform leadership. Finally, we discuss the implications for future research on the platform leadership model, including how it fits with the existing models of leadership, and what kinds of organizations and what kinds of movements are most likely to develop platform leaders. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Transnational studies and collective memory studies have been in vogue in sociology in recent years, yet surprisingly few sociologists have integrated the two areas, or brought them into conversation with studies of community formation among refugees from political violence and genocide. This roundtable presentation, part of a more extensive research project in progress, explores the impact of memory on the formation of identities among refugees in the aftermath of ethnic cleansing in Bosnia-Hercegovina in the early 1990s. Drawing on semi-structured interviews and fieldwork with more than 60 refugees and community leaders in the US, and 8 displaced persons from B-H now living in Serbia and Croatia, I discuss the ways that ethno-national identity is (re)constructed through selective acts of remembering, forgetting, and transmitting experiences of inter-group relations from childhood and extended family life, the recent war, and return visits to B-H. Drawing on these memories, differentiated as well by prior social class, regional background, age, gender, and resettlement experience, I examine the following identity formations: (re)assumption of "Yugoslav" identity, turn toward "Islamist" identity, new nationalist identity, allergy to all national identities. This work is significant not only because it brings diverse areas of social theory and research together to bear on a little-researched new immigrant group, but also because it matters to sociologists and citizens--their "neighbors"-- who struggle to understand and represent the meanings and consequences of extreme political violence for an increasing number of forcibly displaced persons in this post Cold War age of new globalization and transnationalism. The ailing economy, healthcare reform and terrorist threats dominate the headlines of U.S. news. Yet, concerns about "illegal immigrants" are never far behind. Life for undocumented residents has become increasingly difficult after 9/11. Beyond worries about economic security and day-to-day survival, the threat of violence and workplace raids creates a context of fear and insecurity. Historically, faith-based and religious groups have played a critical role in responding to these concerns. A universal ethic of compassion often underwrites their motivation, such as the biblical mandate to "help the Stranger among us." But secular, civic and municipal social service organizations that advocate on behalf of immigrants also embody cultures of compassion that reflect religious underpinnings, even if indirectly. I examine the role of faith among those who work with immigrants in a small, New England city that has emerged as a new gateway since 2000. With an undocumented population of about 12,000-15,000, there is considerable debate in the public sphere about helping "illegal" immigrants. My research, based on in-depth interviews, ethnographic and textual data, explores how organizational and community leaders imagine what assistance immigrants "deserve" and why. Three dimensions of collective meanings shape their responses: 1) biblical or scriptural mandates, 2) less-formal, "God-given" rules and norms; and 3) secular or lay interpretations that bear the stamp of religion and/or spirituality in some way. These structures of meaning serve as a collective cultural reservoir for the circulation of discourses about God, immigrants, basic human rights and the idea of "legality" more broadly. Drawing on procedural justice research from social psychology, this study explores the role that journalistic practice plays in telling community members about whether local politicians are behaving fairly. Qualitative interviews with 24 community journalists working in cities in Upstate New York are used to answer the following research questions: (1) how does content regarding authority fairness find its way into news stories, (2) what facets of justice - whether distributive, voice, or relational - do journalists emphasize, and (3) to what extent do journalists believe readers make fairness judgments based on local news coverage? The interviewed journalists recounted that they often used their evaluation of local politicians' fairness in deciding whether to pursue a story. In doing so, these journalists highlighted questions of whether journalists were listening to community members and the degree to which politicians appeared to take the best interest of citizens to heart. There was little agreement among journalists about the degree to which citizens could adequately make fairness judgments based on local news coverage, although the television reporters believed that television's visual component provided key information about the fairness of local politicians. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
