Hawaii is home to a high number of endemic species, but the state is also considered a hotbed of invasive species. Coffee, like many crops grown in Hawaii, is particularly valuable and susceptible to a number of injurious pest insects not yet established in the islands. A comprehensive statewide survey of insects found on coffee plants has never been undertaken. Cultivated and feral coffee, at 46 sites on the six main Hawaiian Islands, was systematically surveyed for pest and innocuous insects. Surveys identified 152 unique insect species or morphotypes in 12 orders associated with coffee throughout the state. Some are major pests of coffee, such as the coffee berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei, while others have little impact on coffee production. A survey for scolytine bark and ambrosia beetles undertaken on the entomologically understudied Hawaiian island of Lanai revealed for the first time the presence there of the coffee berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari, 1867), a serious exotic pest of cultivated coffee. Lanai is chronologically the fourth Hawaiian island on which H. hampei has been found, following its initial detection on the island of Hawaii, followed by Oahu then Maui. We present the new records from Lanai in detail, together with a map of collecting sites and photographs of an adult specimen, demonstrating that the beetle is now widespread on Lanai, occurring at high and low elevations, and in both mesic and xeric environments. The black twig borer, Xylosandrus compactus, is an ambrosia beetle that was reported in Hawaii in 1960 and attacks branches of more than 200 plant species, including coffee. This beetle was found for the first time boring coffee berries in the district of Hilo on the island of Hawaii. Beetles reached the endosperm and caused damage without making galleries or ovipositing. The tropical nut borer, Hypothenemus obscurus, is a pest of macadamia nuts that has been in Hawaii since 1988 and was recently found for the first time in Hawaii attacking coffee berries. Its entry hole was observed close to the blossom area or the side of the berry. Sometimes damage was caused near the endosperm but no galleries or eggs were found.
