We are feminist sociologists whose professional lives have been spent in the realm of gender and policy research in a variety of fields including mental health disability, HIV/AIDS, homelessness, workplace discrimination, teen pregnancy prevention, and rape prevention education. Cook has consulted with presidential and other federal commissions in the Clinton and both Bush administrations, and has been successful in obtaining and maintaining significant national funding regardless of the political climate. Fonow is a member of the Governor of Arizona's Commission on the Prevention of Violence against Women and served as an ad hoc policy adviser to the Ohio Governor's Council on Women and Policy. In this paper, we argue that feminists engaged in policy research must be both methodologically rigorous and politically astute, in order to assure that their results are heard by public officials, thereby increasing the chances that their findings impact social policy. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
