The presentation analyzes risks and future opportunities for public libraries from the analysis of two important phenomena of the current socio-economic context: the evolution of the public / private relationship and the crisis of the welfare state on the one hand, the profound transformation of goods and services within an urban setting and the knowledge economy on the other. the author then offers a brief description of some models of contemporary public library and outline the main features of the multipurpose library. What emerges is a picture of great complexity, which opens many questions about the future of public libraries, crushed mechanisms in general and that they are often unable to govern.
