At Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant Unit 3, installation of a fuel handling machine is planned to support the removal of spent fuel. The dose rates at the workplace were calculated based on the source distribution measured using a collimator in order to confirm that the dose rates on the operation floor were within a manageable range. It was confirmed that the accuracy of the source distribution was C/M = 1.0-2.4. These dose rates were then used to plan the work on the operation floor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This contribution describes principles and applications of the modern semiconductors of beta and gamma radiation. These semiconductor detectors have some beneficial characteristics compared to the still-used Geiger-Müller tubes: there is no need for high voltage for power or output pulse shaping circuits because the output of the available semiconductor detectors is TTL signal. The mysterious invisible radiation that ionized air was studied a century ago by many scientists. Finally, on 7 August 1912, Victor Hess in his seventh balloon flight that year, reached an altitude of about 5000 m. With his electroscopes on board the hydrogen-filled balloon he observed that the ionization instead of decreasing with altitude increased significantly. Hess had discovered cosmic rays, a discovery that gave him the 1936 Nobel Prize in physics. When research resumed after World War I focus was on understanding the nature of the cosmic radiation. Particles or radiation? Positive or negative? Electrons, positrons or protons? This study is carried out to observe muons coming from the zenith direction at ground level using a muon telescope based on Geiger-Muller (GM) tubes. Measurements were made for 16 sampling days from November 2008 to January 2009; simultaneously outside and inside the Physics Building of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in Bangi (3.05edeg N, 101.68° E and 50 m asl), Malaysia. Daily sampling sessions of 30 minutes are sub-divided into six consecutive sub-sampling periods of five minutes and descriptive statistics is used to summarise the observed muon counts. Then, applying the inferential statistical methods of ANOVA and t-test indicate that the time variation of the muon count is not significant and the building roof does not significantly affect the muon count rate. Delay wire chamber (DWC) is a relatively inexpensive gaseous detector that enables tracking of charged particles with high resolution. Here, design and simulation of a DWC that is suitable for beam diagnostics measurements at low-energy accelerators are described. We report on the mechanical construction of such a chamber at the Kandilli Detector, Accelerator and Instrumentation Laboratory, and the tests performed with cosmic muons and radioactive sources.
