Abstract

In the Philippines, one in five school-aged children are affected by undernutrition, increasing their risk of physical and cognitive development. The Department of Education (DepEd) attempts to address this issue by targeting children with low body mass index (BMI) for their school-based feeding program (SBFP). However, challenges like inadequate measuring tools and supervision in low-resource communities have led to large discrepancies in the nutritional status of SBFP beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries. Siy Van et al. [1] addresses the difficulties associated with BMI by using machine learning (ML) to predict undernutrition among school-aged children based on socioeconomic and demographic characteristics, dietary diversity scores, and food insecurity scores. Their study compared several ML algorithms and found that their best performing model in terms of accuracy was a random forest (RF) model. However, the RF model had high sensitivity with low specificity, indicating a bias towards the positive class. This study aims to improve these results by employing oversampling techniques and other ML algorithms that were not used in the study. Using the same data set in [1], this study compares four machine learning algorithms (RF, XGBoost, DNN, and NNRF) to predict undernutrition among school-aged children, managing imbalanced data using three oversampling techniques (SMOTE, Borderline-SMOTE, and ADASYN). Eight independent classification tasks for predicting undernutrition were performed, and results showed that a RF-Borderline model performed the best in terms of Cohen's κ (0.3662), with an accuracy of 71.61%, sensitivity of 71.13%, and a specificity of 73.08%. While RF performed the best overall, XGBoost and NNRF performed better than RF on specific tasks. Notably, incorporating oversampling consistently enhanced model performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

43. A Cultural Approach to Public Relations Research: An Extension of Hofstede's Variables to Grunig's Models of Public Relations.

Abstract

A pilot study internationalized an existing set of four models of public relations and field tested an instrument that represents a cultural approach to public relations practice. The instrument is based on a combination and extension of G. Hofstede's views of culture as mental programs comprised of values about power, distance, uncertainty avoidance, masculinity-femininity, and individualism-collectivism, and J. E. Grunig's four models of public relations practice based on the direction and purpose of communication behavior. Subjects, 94 of 134 active public relations practitioners and researchers in an urban midwestern city, completed the instrument which reflected cultural variables, models of public relations, and demographic information. Results indicated that: (1) power distance correlated with both of the one way models of public relations, press agentry and public information; (2) Hofstede's uncertainty avoidance dimension correlated with the public information model only; (3) the separated index of femininity correlated with both the two-way asymmetrical and two-way symmetrical models; and (4) both individualism and collectivism correlated with each of the two way models. 44. Findings in Search of an Issue: Preliminary Development of a Student Questionnaire for Distance Education Contexts.

Abstract

Part of a larger line of inquiry on the socially constructed experience of the mediated classroom and student socialization in the university community, a study reports on the development of an instrument for tapping student experience in televised instruction classrooms. A theoretical framework underlies the instrument to illuminate reasons for student judgments about the positive and negative learning experiences in the class. Items are structured so that the reasons include expressions of personal responsibility for success or shortfalls as well as attributions of responsibility to external conditions. Findings based on using the instrument in a physics course (in which teaching assistants interact with students off campus before and after rebroadcasts of the videotaped lectures) show how the item format contributes to understanding why students make the evaluative judgments that they do and these are drawn upon to illuminate three issues relevant to instructionally appropriate evaluation: effectiveness/quality; commitment/stakeholders; and access/resources.
