DESY in Hamburg, Germany, has decided to reconstruct its 2.304 km long storage ring PETRA II into a third generation synchrotron radiation source starting 2007. The synchrotron source will operate at 6 GeV particle energy, 100 mA current and an emittance of 1 nmrad. In the framework of current developments of new powerful VUV and EUV radiation sources, like VUV free-electron-lasers or EUV plasma sources for 13-nm lithography, we developed a gas-monitor detector in order to measure the photon flux of highly intense and extremely pulsed VUV and EUV radiation in absolute terms. The device is based on atomic photoionization of a rare gas at low particle density. Therefore, it is free of degradation and almost transparent, which allows the detector to be used as a continuously working beam-intensity monitor. The extended dynamic range of the detector allowed its calibration with relative standard uncertainties of 4% in the Radiometry Laboratory of the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt at the electron-storage ring BESSY II in Berlin using spectrally dispersed synchrotron radiation at low photon intensities and its utilization for absolute photon flux measurements of high power sources. In the present contribution, we describe the design of the detector and its application for the characterization of VUV free-electron-laser radiation at the TESLA test facility in Hamburg. The synchrotron radiation beamline at the PETRA storage ring at DESY with two end stations uses a 4 m-long undulator delivering hard X-ray photons up to 300 keV at a storage ring energy of 12 GeV. The spatial photon intensity distribution at the first undulator harmonic (21.23 keV) was used to determine the horizontal emittance of the storage ring. The set-up installed at 107.7 m from the source point consists of a vacuum chamber with a cryogenically cooled silicon crystal in Laue geometry. The monochromatized radiation is converted to visible light by a fluorescent screen on the back of an aluminum plate and observed by a digital camera. Gaussian fits to horizontal lines through the centre of mass of the images provide the standard deviations of the measured intensity distributions in the horizontal plane. The corresponding emittance values were derived by modeling the whole setup with the SPECTRA code using the emittance as a free parameter and by using machine physics formulas neglecting photon source size effects. © 2004 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present an overview of the vacuum-ultraviolet free electron laser (VUV FEL) user facility at DESY comprising the layout of the experimental hall, radiation transport to the experimental area, as well as photon beam diagnostics. In general, diagnostics of the FEL radiation is particularly challenging due to the laser’s unique properties such as extremely high peak powers and short pulse lengths. Yet, pulse-resolved characterization of the photon beam is essential for most user experiments.
