It is proposed that the model of the applied sociologist as a craftsman is similar to the model social scientist described by C. Wright Mills. The characteristics of the applied sociologist as a craftsman are summarized as follows:1) know and use both theory and method, 2) be wholly committed to his/her craft through a reflexive attention to his life and work, 3) insist on a critical rather than received understanding, 4) require that this understanding can make a difference, and 5) embrace a creative play with all of these elements (theory, method, the interdependence of life and work, critique, and social change) that defines authentic applied sociology. There is no shortage of information on mentoring that describes its benefits and outlines recommended structures. Manuals and workshops are even available for the propagation of the faith. Unfortunately, critical attention to the ethical basis of mentoring is less common.
