Abstract

We investigate light element synthesis through the ν-process during supernova explosions considering neutrino oscillations and investigate the dependence of 7Li and 11B yields on neutrino oscillation parameters mass hierarchy and θ13. The adopted supernova explosion model for explosive nucleosynthesis corresponds to SN 1987A. The 7Li and 11B yields increase by about factors of 1.9 and 1.3 in the case of normal mass hierarchy and adiabatic 13-mixing resonance compared with the case without neutrino oscillations. In the case of inverted mass hierarchy or nonadiabatic 13-mixing resonance, the increase in 7Li and 11B yields is much smaller. Astronomical observations of 7Li/11B ratio in stars formed in regions strongly affected by prior generations of supernovae would constrain mass hierarchy and the range of θ13. © 2006 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The College of Charleston (CofC) is one of three institutions that belong to a consortium led by the Division of Science and Mathematics at the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) to maintain and operate a research grade telescope at Etelman Observatory on the island of St. Thomas (18deg, 21′ N, 65deg W at an elevation ∼ 1325 ft with ≤ 1″ seeing). The location provides 80% sky coverage of the southern celestial hemisphere and, on average, ∼ 6 hours of clear sky per night, except during the peak of hurricane season. This makes the observatory an ideal facility for observing Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs). The observatory will serve a variety of needs to the consortium members that include research, teaching, and public outreach. The primary research function of this facility will be to perform rapid, automated followup observations of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) observed with NASA’s Swift spacecraft, to be launched in June 2004, via the GCN. The newly renovated observatory houses a new robotic 0.5 m Cassegrain telescope with a back-illuminated Marconi 2024 × 2024 CCD42-40 imaging array and 12-position UBVRI filter wheel. Assuming 1.5″ seeing and a S/N=5, we can obtain a limiting (unfiltered) magnitude of ∼ 19 with a 10 s integration time. The slew rate is >= 10deg per second. With the exceptional sky coverage at Etelman Observatory, we anticipate a detection rate of about 10–15% of the Swift detection rate, and we anticipate making a significant contribution to the global network of small telescopes dedicated to GRB observations. © 2004 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We report on mid-infrared observations of the compact stellar cluster located in the proximity of SGR 1900+14, and the radio/X-ray position of this soft-gamma repeater. Observations were performed in May and June of 2001 when the bursting source was in an active state. At the known radio and X-ray position of the SGR we did not detect transient mid-IR activity, although the observations were performed only hours before and after an outburst in the high-energy band. Abstract

We discuss several effects due to absorption of high energy gamma-rays by pair production with ambient background photons. This absorption process leads to the concept of the gamma-ray horizon, which is the energy dependent distance beyond which the optical depth due to this process exceeds unity. At low redshift we investigate the cut-off in the spectrum of Mkn501 (z=0.034), which is observed to be in the vincinity of E[SUBγ] = 10 TeV. To date there are no GeV-TeV sources with well established spectra and redshifts larger than that of Mkn501. Therefore we can only consider absorption for hypothetical sources as a function of redshift, to predict the locii of the spectral cut-offs for various redshifts. Our study shows that absorption of photons above 50 GeV is severe for redshifts beyond ≈ 3. Thus to sample high energy sources to even larger redshifts will require observations well below 50 GeV. In this energy regime the GLAST experiment, to be launched in 2005, will provide a significant improvement in sensitivity over previous missions. Observations from the ground with the next generation of Cherenkov telescopes (MAGIC, VERITAS, HESS...) will also provide increased sensitivity and, more importantly, lower threasholds. The combined effort of space- and ground-based high energy observatories is expected to provide data on a large sample of GeV/TeV sources, which will shed light on the central engines of active galaxies and probe the metagalactic radiation field through the pair creation opacity. High energy radiation from a variety of sources throughout the universe accumulates to the diffuse extragalactic gamma-ray background, as measured by EGRET. Abstract

We present a semi-empirical model for the evolving far-infrared to ultraviolet diffuse background produced by stars in galaxies. The model is designed to reproduce the results of deep galaxy surveys, and therefore may be considered as a cosmology-independent lower limit to the extragalactic background light. Using this model and recent HEGRA data, we infer the intrinsic spectrum at multi-TeV gammaray energies for Mkn 501 and find that it is consistent with a power law of spectral index 2.49 ± 0.04. In turn, this finding renders it rather unlikely that the present-day infrared background has an intensity as high as claimed by Finkbeiner et al.. Future 10 GeV to TeV observations could be used to either constrain the ultraviolet-to-infrared background model at high redshifts or cosmological parameters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

GRBs have redshifts comparable to, perhaps even larger than those of quasars. Indeed, they are the most energetic explosions in the universe, with energies of order M[sub ⊙]c[sup 2]. Their host galaxies are faint, but are actively forming stars at rates typical of galaxies in the early universe. The current paradigm associates GRBs with the formation of black holes in massive, rotating stars, or with the mergers of compact binaries.
