Abstract

The pan-European power grid is experiencing an increasing penetration of Variable Renewable Energy (VRE). The fluctuating and non-dispatchable nature of VRE hinders them in providing the Ancillary Service (AS) needed for the reliability and stability of the grid. Today's grid is reliant on synchronous generators. In case of sudden frequency deviations, the inertia of their rotating masses contributes significantly to the stabilisation of the system. However, as the modern power grid is gravitating towards an inverter-dominated system, these must also be able to replicate this characteristic. Therefore, Energy Storage Systems (ESS) are needed along the VRE. Among the different ESS, Pumped Hydro Storage (PHS) can be identified as particularly convenient, given its cost-effective implementation and considerable lifespan, in comparison to other technologies. PHS is reliant on difference in altitudes, which makes this technology only available if suitable topographic conditions exist. The ALPHEUS project will introduce a lowhead PHS for a relatively flat topography. In this paper, a gridforming controlled inverter coupled with low-head PHS that can contribute to the grid stability is introduced, emphasising its ability to provide different AS, especially frequency control, through the provision of synthetic system inertia, as well as fast Frequency Containment Reserves (fFCR). 48. Calibration of a magnetometer in combination with inertial sensors.

Abstract

Measurements from magnetometers and inertial sensors (accelerometers and gyroscopes) can be combined to give 3D orientation estimates. In order to obtain accurate orientation estimates it is imperative that the magnetometer and inertial sensor axes are aligned and that the magnetometer is properly calibrated for both sensor errors as well as presence of magnetic distortions. In this work we derive an easy-to-use calibration algorithm that can be used to calibrate a combination of a magnetometer and inertial sensors. The algorithm compensates for any static magnetic distortions created by the sensor platform, magnetometer sensor errors and determines the alignment between the magnetometer and the inertial sensor axes. The resulting calibration procedure does not require any additional hardware. We make use of probabilistic models and obtain the calibration algorithm as the solution to a maximum likelihood problem. The efficacy of the proposed algorithm is illustrated using experimental data collected from a sensor unit placed in a magnetically disturbed environment onboard a jet aircraft. 49. Evaluation of the Maximum Power Point Tracking performance in small wind turbines.

Abstract

In the scope of a further increase in the production of renewable energy, grid-connected small wind turbines offer a promising new technology. To ensure a market breakthrough of small wind turbines, the cost effectiveness must be maximized. Therefore, the aerodynamic efficiency or power coefficient of the turbine blades is an important factor. This power coefficient is determined by the Tip Speed Ratio (TSR), which characterizes the air flow around the blade. The control of the converter must regulate the TSR of the turbine at the most optimal value to maximize the power coefficient. This is done by the Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithm. In this paper, measurement data of three commercial wind turbines is used to evaluate the MPPT performance. The real TSR will be calculated from the measurements and compared to the optimal value for each wind speed. This allows to investigate whether the MPPT performs adequately. From the difference between the real TSR and the optimal TSR, an estimation will be made of the loss of energy yield caused by the possible ineffective operation of the MPPT algorithm.
