We provide an account of the pragmatics of "zero sentences" in English, which are characterized by a null expletive subject, e.g. (It) Seems like he's a good candidate for the job. Previous accounts have noted that zero sentences have a "subjective" flavor. In our analysis, this emerges from the fact that zero sentences are conventionally associated with the speech act of judgment, an expression of subjective belief. This accounts for a wide range of semantic constraints on zero sentences, such as the fact that they must express a proposition whose truth value is relativized to the perspective of a judge. As zero sentences pair a specialized syntax with a discourse function, they constitute a sentence type of English, alongside e.g. declaratives, interrogatives, imperatives, and exclamatives.
