Groundwater quality degradation is increasing day by day due to absence of proper wastewater management system, particularly in underdeveloped countries. The objective of this research was to investigate the movement of heavy metals through soil to groundwater in Hattar Industrial State, Haripur (Pakistan). An experimental setup was made for studying heavy metals leaching. Three circular columns of depth 0.3, 0.6 and 0.9 meter (m) were made and filled with soil. The main drain effluent was poured into experimental setup through dosing pumps at a rate of 4 Liter/day and treated effluent was received from the bottom end of the column. Wastewater was examined regularly before and after treatment. The concentration of nickel (Ni), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), Iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), arsenic (As) and mercury (Hg) were tested in the influent and effluent wastewater samples. Result shows that Nickel removal efficiency was 45.16% in 0.9m depth column. Similarly maximum removal efficiencies of Cd, Pb, Cr, Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn, As and Hg were achieved at 0.9m depth i.e. 82.35, 43.47, 81.98, 96.67, 48.92, 98.53, 98.18, 41.81, and 95.96% respectively. Significant concentrations of heavy metals were detected in ground water samples collected from bores. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
