Emotions are vital to learning success, especially in online learning environments. They make the difference between learning success and failure. Unfortunately, learners' emotional state is still rarely considered in online learning and teaching, although it is an important driver of learning success. This paper reports a work-in-progress systematic literature review to provide a current state of research on emotion measurement in online learning environments. The findings will later serve as a basis for creating an emotion-based adaptive online learning environment. [For the full proceedings, see ED636095.]

This study aims to develop a preliminary model for the content validation of serious games, specifically to assess two cybersecurity games designed for children aged 8-13 years as part of the Erasmus+ project "SuperCyberKids". Using a scoping review of databases from pedagogy, psychology, and computer science, we identified current trends in creating and validating content for serious games. The study proposes a three-phase model for content validation: initialization, theoretical content validation, and practical content validation. This model is intended to ensure that serious games meet the defined learning objectives and provide effective learning experiences. Subsequently, we conducted a survey with N=20 experts based on the scoping review, who were asked to evaluate the content of two cybersecurity games, Spoofy and Nabbovaldo. Preschool children were presented with conflicting cues in order to assess the importance of pointing, verbalizing, and looking by adults in directing the attention of children. The study involved two procedures: first, the experimenter indicated by pointing, verbalizing, or looking whether a big or little bead was to be put on a string by the child; following this, the child indicated for the experimenter which beads he should put on the string. Seven girls and 16 boys, ranging in age 3 to 6 years, were included in the study. Results indicated that children were most likely to attend to pointing cues of adults and least likely to attend to the adult's eyes as a cue. These results are contrary to suggestions that speech is of primary importance in the development of attention, and further suggest (1) the necessity of considering attention as a factor in investigations of various modes of representation; and (2) that the importance of nonverbal means of instruction for preschoolers should not be neglected. To determine if there is a distinction between the forensics community's idea of quality and that of the general population, tournament rankings of forensics judges and those of a lay audience were compared. Undergraduate students enrolled in a variety of speech related courses were asked to attend rounds of competition at a midwest collegiate forensics tournament and fill out a ranking sheet (similar to a master ballot used by the regular assigned judges) on the performers. The comparative rankings generated 921 ranked pairs. Results showed that there does not appear to be a significant similarity in the direct rankings or adjacent rankings of professional and lay judges. The data also implies that even within the ranks of forensics judges a wide range of ranks is common and a wide spectrum of evaluation is likely. (Eight tables of data are included.) (MS)

The new board member will always have concerns about his/her forthcoming trusteeship, such as determining how much time he/she is willing to devote to the job; how he/she should obtain orientation for the job; and what he/she should know about the controversial issues in which the board has previously been involved. In addressing the first of these concerns, the new trustee should realize that preparation for board meeting requires in-depth and time-consuming study. As for orientation, this can effected through the professional literature, workshops, formal orientation programs, trustee manuals, and through the support of fellow board members. Finally, an examination of the minutes of past board meetings will reveal several controversial incidents. At Yavapai College, for example, such incidents have included: (1) charges by the local press that the convening of an executive session was in violation of Arizona's open meeting law, the need to obtain legal counsel to answer these charges, and to determine how a quorum of members can formally gather; (2) the board's consideration of proposals that might have jeopardized community relations; (3) the development of a cooperative working relationship with a foundation associated with the college; and (4) the board's decision to require athletes to exceed minimum academic standards set by the American Junior College Athletics Association. The article discusses research which investigated the stiffness variation of monopiles in dense saturated sand during cyclic tests for a soil-foundation system for offshore wind turbines. Topics discussed include an increase in the soil-pile stiffness during cyclic tests in loose sand and stiffness variation rate per number of cycles.

A recent experiment was performed at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (UK) to study fast electron propagation in cylindrically compressed targets, a subject of interest for fast ignition. This experiment was performed in the framework of the experimental road map of the Hiper project (the European High Power laser Energy Research facility Project). In this experiment, protons accelerated by a pecosecond laser pulse have been used to radiograph a 220 μm-diameter, 20 μm-wall cylinder filled with 0.1 g/cc foam, imploded with ∼200 J of green laser light in 4 symmetrically incident beams of pulse length 1 ns. Point projection proton backlighting was used to measure the compression degree as well as the stagnation time. Results were compared to those from hard X-ray radiography. Finally, Monte Carlo simulations of proton propagation in the cold and in the compressed targets allowed a detailed comparison with 2D numerical hydro simulations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since the breakdown of the Soviet Union, public approval ratings of Russian police have remained low. Mass media portrayal of the police has been identified as one of the potential contributors to the problem of public-police relations in Russia. Many criminal justice professionals believe that due to the lack of strong censorship in the post -Soviet Union, the Russian media has influenced public approval of Russian police by its negative portrayal of police. This study examines public, police, and media relationships to empirically test the media's effect on public attitudes about the police. Specifically, the study examines whether media exposure and trustworthiness have impacted public attitudes about the police directly along with any reciprocal effects. The findings show that relationships between the media and public perceptions of the police are complex. While there are statistically significant relationships between levels of media exposure and public approval of police, media trustworthiness also has a statistically significant result. The findings suggest that while media can have some impact on citizen attitudes about the police, simultaneously there is a state of public distrust that is attributable to both the media and the police. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Previous research suggests that more then 50% of all crimes in Russia are not reported to the police. This paper examines the phenomenon by analyzing police dissatisfaction rates in Russia during the last nine years. Dissatisfaction with police is examined at the larger federal institutional and smaller city departmental levels to compare both macro and micro effects. Dissatisfaction, along with observed police misconduct, is predicted to be a major reason why victims fail to report crime. This study is based on more than 1000 survey responses collected during 1998-2007 in Volgograd, Russia. Control variables include the type of crimes reported and victim demographics. Findings indicate that police dissatisfaction on both macro and micro levels plays an important role in reporting crime.
