The purpose of this study is to describe the social and demographic features of ethnic neighborhoods across America and depict temporal trends of neighborhood change under the vast influx of new Latino and Asian immigrants. Specifically, this study addresses three questions. 1) What has happened to levels of residential concentration of ethnic minorities (including Asians, Blacks, and Latinos) over the last decade? In other words, have the numbers of ethnic neighborhoods increased or decreased? 2) Using census tract as the unit of analysis, what are socioeconomic and demographic characteristics of ethnic neighborhoods across the country? Are within-neighborhood racial and ethnic complexities increasing or decreasing? 3) Are new ethnic neighborhoods in America's suburbs forming? That is, to what extent are ethnic minority populations in the US experiencing suburbanizing? And to what extent are 'ethnoburbs' in the process of formation? Preliminary results suggest that with few exceptions ethnic neighborhoods are growing in numbers and their socioeconomic status is concomitantly increasing. A trend towards suburbanization is detected for most ethnic neighborhoods although the majority of ethnic neighborhoods remain urban. At least for some ethnic neighborhoods, there is a need to reconsider the stereotypical image of ethnic immigrant enclave, because a plausible phenomenon is emerging that while ethnic neighborhoods still tend to be insular and heavily 'ethnic,' they are not necessarily poor with large number of low SES marginalized residents trapped within involuntarily. This 'ethnoburb' formation needs to be further investigated as an evolving demographic trend of immigrant communities. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
