To process big data, both new computational methods and human curators are needed. One potential source of curators can be found in the classroom. However, the process of engaging students in bioinformatics research must be pedagogically sound. Here we provide a pedagogy-based framework for bioinformatics project design, instructor and student self-reported barriers, and research-based solutions to barriers in a Problem Based Learning context.
